Is it a winner?

We're climbing up in the betting again. Up to 5th now, behind Armenia, Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

Have just climbed to 4th ahead of Norway now... Momentum seems to be with Molly more than anyone else. Still a long way behind Armenia and Sweden in the betting, but if she gets a good draw I can see her odds closing in...

Looks like they got a good turnout thank goodness.

This has been upgraded to TEN from me. I can't stop listening to it.

It really does feel like a WINNER too! :disco:

I don't understand why we're still behind bloody DENMARK in the betting.

This is a good pop song in it's own right. Haven't heard any other Eurovision songs, but I'd be surprised if this wasn't top 5 at least.

Past form, surely?

I do know a few people who Denmark down as their bloody FAVOURITE though. I think it's awful too.

The only thing that's a slight reservation for me about Molly winning is that I think it's been a pretty long run of female winners (including ELL) and it's probably time for a man to win... but this really sounds like the obvious winner to me.

*Gets book of stats out*

We've had 4 female winners in a row which isn't THAT uncommon. We had 5 in the 90s from 95-99, and we had 9 in a row from 1967-1975, which was actually 12 winners if you include all 4 winners in 1969.

In 58 contests a male lead vocal has won 16 times. A female lead vocal has won 40 times and male/female twice. And I am counting Brotherhood of Man and Bucks Fizz as male in that list.

*puts book of stats away*

It probably is statistically likely that a man will win soon though.

I really like her voice but I still can't get fully on board with the song... the chorus feels like it should be a lot bigger than it actually is. Maybe the performance on the night will finally sell it.

I am hoping for a last minute rejig. It loses momentum in the second verse and could do with a few more 'power to the people' bits.

That's great great great! I have high hopes for UK this year!

She's performing it on Graham Norton tomorrow, but what other promo has been done? Surely it needs to have a European commercial campaign too, especially as we're not in the semi.

I thought she was on Graham Norton this week, we had the Kaiser Chiefs instead.

Good to see they have made an effort with something that feels like a proper music video for this. I like the shots where it looks like she is waiting to be burned at the flower arrangement stake.

Why does UK promo matter? If anything it's better to have it the week before than a fortnight before, given how the audience for Eurovision tends to work in the UK.

What promo is being done elsewhere? I personally would have thought to do a show here or there this week in the UK, then do something across Europe in the week before.

Familiarity and votes? Isn't that always the big criticism, with the fact that some successful entries had been hits throughout Europe prior to the contest?

I've come to think over the last few years that promo tours are just a waste of money. Not a single winner's done one, and I doubt many people on the night will have been watching the Russian equivalent of Loose Women three weeks before, let alone remember the song on there. Yet somehow this big impression that promo tours are vital has taken hold because Jade did one.

Well, Euphoria *was* already a hit before the contest, even if she didn't do much to promote it.

I've noticed a lot of promotion is now focused on the really small markets like Malta and San Marino. Quite clever really.

I think there was a similar strategy with Jade - Malta was a big focus, which seemed to pay off.

Oh don't get me wrong, having a hit before the contest is about as sure a sign as any you'll do well. But I think we know from HERE that a sole appearance on Loose Babushkas does not a European hit make - that, invariably, seems to come from the music speaking for itself.

I don't know why they'd bother with San Marino though - they never televote!
