The Kate Bush Singles Rate: The Countdown (2 Viewers)

I STILL find it quite odd that for all projects Kate JUMPED AT THE CHANCE to do, it was a song for The Golden Compass soundtrack :D

Is she known to be a big fan of the BOOKS or something?
She's friends with Philip Pullman, isn't she? I'm actually not sure WHAT I'm basing that on, but I'm sure I read it somewhere or other.

Lyra goes on and on to the point she certainly doesn't want us to forget her (nor put more than a constantly repeating chorus in and little else) but it remains BEAUTIFUL.

What was the first part of the song, something she concocted for a different project earlier?

I would definitely put Lyra below 'an entire song about disgraced former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone' on the list of Kate Bush projects to be surprised about.

Dinosaur and The Golden Compass. Is Kate Bush BOX OFFICE POISON?

Dinosaur and The Golden Compass. Is Kate Bush BOX OFFICE POISON?

The story behind the Dinosaur track is that they test marketed the movie with her song in it to an audience in the US, who unanimously said the music was nice until the scary screechy lady started singing which they found very off-putting. They therefore took her out. So they can't really blame her for that one flopping.

The Golden Compass, however, is all on her.

32. There Goes A Tenner (from The Dreaming)

The first single in the countdown that comes from an ALBUM. And in true Kate form, this also had no impact on the charts and is thus considered as a ‘lost single’, peaking at just #93. The song itself tells the story of a clumsy bank robbery as told by the fearful and paranoid perpetrator, because WHY NOT!

Average score: 5.8125
Highest score: 10 (Gangsta Nancy Lam)
Lowest score: 0 (funky, Ag - starting to notice a theme here :D)

I love this so much! The fake Cockney accent is HILLARIE. And I like songs like these when she tells a whole random story.

A star in Strangeways :disco: I love it, dodgy cockney accent n' all.

Clearly not one of her classics and a ridiculous single choice (not that the album was exactly peppered with smash hits) but I do love it really.

"Remember them? That's when we used to vote for him..."

Kate's Bexleyheath/Welling, but Wiki says she went to grammar school in Abbey Wood. Perhaps they are cockney there.

I know it's London now, but she was born in Kent. Please don't take that away from us - all we have is her and Kelly Brook.

31. Rocket Man

Her cover of this Elton John hit fared slightly better than singles we’ve visited so far, #12 in the UK, but as high as #2 in Australia, so not bad at all, particularly since it had hints of REGGAE. Kate mentioned that Elton had been one of her heroes growing up, so it’s a project that made a BIT more sense than the likes of LYRA.

Average score: 6.375
Highest score: 9 (Gangsta Nancy Lam, straightorbroken)
Lowest score: 3 (jyxz)

How lovely to put There Goes A Tenner on. She'd have been exceptional on The Bill - think how well it could have done then. And speaking of tenners, Rocket Man is seriously gorgeous and voted the 2nd best cover of all time by Loose Women viewers in 2006 behind Natalie Impruglia's Torn.

I'm choosing to believe that much like my ASFM placings, our host has merely decided to space out the quality :)

I read in her biography that she used to rehearse in the boiler room of the Maze Hill leisure centre back in the days of the KT Bush band. For a long time that was my local swimming pool so I once asked to see the boiler room to SOAK UP the atmosphere :disco:

(They said there was no such thing in the centre :shy:)

Mind you she used to play in the main pub on Lewisham High street which I went into once and it was a TOTAL DINGE.

30. Deeper Understanding (from The Sensual World)

Originally from The Sensual World, this was released as a single in 2011 as the lead single from The Director’s Cut, and became her first single release since Lyra. I certainly prefer the version from the album, as it doesn’t include DREADED BERTIE. And in true Kate fashion, we’ve gone from bank robberies going tits up yesterday to the issue of people replacing human relationships with technology today. What a topical lady.

Average score: 6.5
Highest score: 10 (lolly)
Lowest score: 0 (Ag)

I was AGOG when it was announced that she was releasing Deeper Understanding as the lead single from Director's Cut as it was always one of my least favourite album tracks. I just thought, oh typical. She definitely improved on the original though and I enjoy it now. The video is quite good too although a bit pretentious, as is her wont at times.

Lily would have made a far superior single. But oddly Deeper Understanding got some radio play on Radio 2.

29. Eat The Music (from The Red Shoes)

From The Red Shoes, this jaunty little number was released as the lead single of the album in the United States, although everywhere else in the world opted for Rubberband Girl. The song explores the idea of opening up in relationships to reveal who we really are inside (:ken:) . This ended up reaching #10 in the US (Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart :eyes:)

Average score: 6.75
Highest score: 10 (Peekaboo, jyxz)
Lowest score: 0 (funky, Ag :D)
