Heat one of a new Melfest year tends to be very 'whelming', and Saturday's show was true to form, with John Lundvik winning almost by default, and Maja Ivarsson invoking the spirit of Kim Wilde to nab the other spot. Neither seems likely to be on the ticket to Basel come May, so will there be anything more inspiring to look forward to in Heat Two?

1. Nomi Tales - Funniest Thing
Nomi Bontegard, Adam Breitholtz, Herman Gardarfve, Jacob Lundahl, Simon Weidersjö

Interesting choice of opener here. Nomi Tales is one of the least familiar faces in this semi final, a graphic designer with a sideline in witchy alt-pop, her biggest hit to date was featured in a video game series called Mistfall, which looks a bit Everquest-y. The songwriters aren't the usual bunch either, although Herman Gadarfve did have a hand in Move by The Mamas. Basically, this could go anywhere, but if cosplay and tarot are your bag, this might be worth a second look.

2. SCHLAGERZ - Don Juan
Anna Engh, Mikael Karlsson

Sad to say it, but with 2025 marking the third consecutive year with none of the 00s Schlager divas even making the lineup, it's probably about time we called the genre, if not dead, then certainly temporarily buried. In what feels like a very half-hearted effort to keep the old school fans onside, we're instead getting served up this trio of C-tier dansband singers with a song penned by the team behind Arvingarna's recent comeback. Hopefully it'll be fun, but it's hard to shake the feeling that we're being asked to feast on rancid scraps and feel grateful for the opportunity. Humbug.

3. Erik Segerstedt - Show Me What Love Is
Mattias Andréasson, Erik Segerstedt, Pontus Söderman

Formerly a member of 2009 Melfest finalists EMD, Erik Segerstedt was last seen at Melfest in 2013 with Hello Goodbye, a well-regarded country ballad which was knocked out in AC. Now he's going in fully solo with a track co-written with his former EMD bandmate Matthias Andréasson. Not much information on the track so far but all signs probably point to something blandly MOR.

4. Klara Hammarström - On & On & On
Peter Boström, Moa "Cazzi Opeia" Carlebecker, Thomas G:son, Klara Hammarström, Jimmy Jansson, Dino Medanhodzic

Arguably the closest thing Gen Z has to a Linda Bengtzing figure at Melfest, good old Klara made three consecutive Melfest appearences from 2020 to 2022, each time doing better than the last. 2022's Run to the Hills felt like it could have been her moment, a massive #1 chart hit that ultimately fell a bit by the wayside as the final shakedown came down to Cornelia Jacobs and Anders Bagge. The songwriting team is basically an allstar lineup of winning entry composers, and on paper, this should be Måns Zelmerlöw's strongest competition. However, while she should be a safe bet to get out of the semis, I can't help feeling that Klara does have the air of somebody the Swedes just won't ever be able to fully trust with the plum job of representing them at Eurovision. Again, she's their new Bengtzing.

5. Fredrik Lundman - The Heart of a Swedish Cowboy
Erik Bernholm, Maja Francis, Thomas G:son

If any entry is going to throw a spanner into the works for Klara this week, it's likely to be this bit of cowboy cosplay. The Swedes love a bit of ersatz country music for some reason, and the title plus presence of G:son suggest this will have all the subtlety of a Trump rally. Brace yourselves, because the older voters are going to eat this shit up.

6. Kaliffa - Salute
Kaliffa Karlsson, Jakob "Big Brain" Malmlöf, Robert Skowronski, Jimmy "Joker" Thörnfeldt, Anderz Wrethov
Kaliffa.jpeg

One for the Spotify generation, Kaliffa (45) had a massive 2017 hit with Helt Serios, which spent several weeks at #1 and has over 65 million streams to date, which is undeniably impressive for a Swedish language song. Subsequent releases don't quite appear to have hit the same heights, but there's obviously enough faith in him to give him a plum spot in the draw.

Thursday: SNIPPETS

On the schlager point, if it's a great schlager song (like Forever Yours was) I don't need it to come from one of six specific singers who were stalwarts in the 00s, most of whom have delivered something pretty mid-tier when they have been allowed back in anyway.

WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT

I fully expect On and On and On and Heart of a Swedish Cowboy to be the greatest six minutes of broadcast television since EAEA/Tattoo/Duje at the Liverpool grand finale

Tbh, they probably could've rallied together a super-group of Anna Book, Jessica Andersson, someone dug up from 90s MelFest and one of the Timoteij girls to do the Schlagerz song.

Maybe they’ll surprise me, but the whole setup reeks of hen party hell.

Maja Francis has released some brilliant songs, and I’m surprised to see her at Melfest as a songwriter.

There hasn’t been any pre-contest buzz about ‘The Heart of a Swedish Cowboy’, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it did well on Saturday.

I have a sneaking suspicion about Heart Of A Swedish Cowboy too…

Here is a list of the songs Erik Bernholm and Thomas G:Son have co-written:

Something In Your Eyes
Still Young
Ashes To Ashes
Forever Yours
Kingdom Come
Higher Power
In A Moment Like This
Waterfall
25 Hours A Day
Quedate Conmigo

Bernholm’s one other Eurovision credit is on Sahlene’s Runaway.

That is what I call a strike rate.

I'm basically expecting Heart of a Swedish Cowboy to be the unofficial fourth installment of the Anna Bergendahl 'Song of the Shake n Go and the Saddle' chronicles

Switch 25 Hours A Day for Forever Yours in there, and that opening six song run would kill me without an oxygen tent being installed in the RVT smoking area

For me the whole list is 12455/10 apart from Waterfall (and maybe Higher Power).

I’ve actually listened to Forever Yours again quite a bit recently and it really surprises me that Moopy isn’t more hysterical about it; it’s an absolute BELTER.

I liked Forever Yours but it was difficult to get too invested in it when the new AC format basically erased it from history the moment it got out of its heat.

There is a special place in hell for last year’s version of AC.

Fitting that SATAN HERSELF was one of the only two people to qualify from it.
To my ears the devil was present in both qualifying acts tbh :D
The forces of Good (Elecktra - "Banne maj") were defeated way too easily that night.

I've seen "The Heart of a Swedish Cowboy" described as a country-ballad. That gives me hope it might die on its arse on Saturday.

NOW MY HEART IS BEATING
AND THE LOVE GOES ON AND ON AND ON

The Nomi Tales clip cuts off at a very annoying point so I can’t quite get the measure of it, but even so I would imagine it and SCHLAGERZ are the clear bottom two this week.

Seems all to play for between the other four. It does feel like Klara should be safe as houses, but that Erik one is VERY strong annoyingly. The cowboy one hits the right notes too.

Nomi Tales - I can't tell whether there's supposed to be a melody here and I don't think she can, either.
Schlagerz - Very pleasing little throwback. It must be quite reassuring for these girls that they'll only need to put up with each other until Saturday night and they never need to speak again after.
Erik Segerstedt - Really, really generic. I can imagine it qualifying but it's VERY anonymous.
Klara - The only one this week that sounds like an obvious qualifier. This should be EXCELLENT.
Fredrik Lundman - Another one that sounds generic. With a title like that I was expecting a little bit of life or camp, but they've played it straight.
Kaliffa - It's good but we've heard this exact song before, and better.

God that Kaliffa one isn’t even remotely trying to hide what a blatant Medina rip-off it is.

What’s the reason for all these football chant kinda songs can someone tell me please

Nomi Tales - this feels like a song gifted to Eurovision Twitter who claim Melfest is just generic pop songs. Well, here’s your witchy little number straight outta Norway’s Melody Gran Prix. I like it, although suspect it will go the way of @ButterTart favourite Stormbringer and @VoR ’s girl Icarus in that it’s a quirky opener that comes last.

Schlagerz - I’ve already seen some nasty girls online saying this is crap. We only have one minute. Everyone knows that this genre of song only works in its entirety:

Minute one: annoying
Minute two: okay well maybe life can be fun, let’s just see where this goes
Keychange
Minute three: DECEASED because life has peaked
Death Becomes Her Falling GIF by Martha of Miami

Erik Segerstedt - instantly impressed - I get a Constellation Prize feeling in that it is a worldwide HIT. this is the dark horse.

Klara - how many times can a one minute clip be played on repeat? I feel quite emotional because this is probably one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. Initially I was frightened because I thought it was going to go into generically-clubby-Jark-has -died direction a la Cascada, but then that piano came in. The piano, if I may just say, is one of humanity’s greatest achievements and here it is used to full effect. The minor key yearning and longing of a female who might not hit all the notes is my favourite thing about music (my favourite song is the grandmaster of this: …Baby One More Time) and so to see this represented here well, what can I say except that this exponential growth from Hammerström is other-worldly. If I had longer I would draw a Venn diagram with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on one side and Klara with a K on the other.

Fredrik Lundman - this is NOT what it was meant to be. I wanted Rednex!

Kaliffa -

Sound engineer: well we’re all done here Mr Kaliffa
Kaliffa: no no no, make it more Medina-ier
Sound engineer: but sir, the system can’t handl-
