Mariah Carey Singles Rate 2020 EDITION

I just find it very elongated - just get on the spacecraft and fly!

Listen, I am engaged to possibly the biggest lamb in the United Kingdom. @HerSereneHighnessAnniFrid woke me up at 4am last week crying because he had a dream that Mariah looked at him. We sleep in a giant clam shell. Our facemasks are kept in a Butterfly artwork tin. If I need to give a few middling scores on this rate to keep a sane sense of perspective then that’s just what I’ll do!

I only gave 14 tens initially but then decided Against All Odds without Westlife was probably worthy of a ten.

Most of my favourite tracks were never singles.

I may attempt this later if I can manage to remember the rules but I’m here right now to say that I think ‘Betcha Gon’ Know’ is actually my favourite Mariah song.

Some of the picks on that list are... choiceful. However, I can understand the rationale behind Always Be My Baby being the ultimate Mariah song. It combines all of her best instincts, eras and sensibilities into an enduring bop.

I will say that MC30 has caused me to re-evaluate her catalogue in a way that I haven't done for years. I have come round to Charmbracelet. I have re-discovered the organic 70s soul back-end of Emancipation. I genuinely, finally and truly understand why, in December 1999, I declared Rainbow the greatest album ever recorded (it slaps). I have even more love for Emotions than ever. However, Butterfly remains her magnum opus - every song is a 16/10.

Hey do you guys know Suomi?

no, who is he?

you know, that guy?

no, what guy?

he’s the one who thinks “Dreamlover” is a 7/10 song...

oh, THAT guy.
I mean, ALL of Suomi's scores in that rate are a disaster.

are we really surprised?

I could question some of this but I won’t, I’ll just say the last sentence is correct.

I was surprised at ABMB at number one. I love it, but it’s quite light. She does some nice runs in it but it’s not the typical bombast of her early singles. It’s not the first song you think of when thinking of her 90s hits.

It's nowhere near being her most technically impressive song, but it's easily her most iconic non-holiday song. There isn't a person who doesn't sing along to it.

And it's interesting because it hadn't always been like that. I think it's only fairly recently that it became her signature song.

If my Mariah singles peak modestly cooperates with the scale submitted by Frozen and is held down to a mere 12, then the rest must reflect this. Anytime You Need A Friend, Fantasy, Always Be My Baby and her purchasing of Christmas are "delirium time" and then some - here she found rapture and runs rings around everyone and arguably her vocals and songwriting were as stretched out as is humanly possible to experience them. Whatever capacity she is at these days, she is as complex as the many she suffers from herself and yet her status is protected better than most (keeping the internet at bay by being fluent in meme certainly helps a tad). My only wish is that these days she creatively unrestricted herself by trying to "recapture" what worked in the past, but there are plenty more examples of her doing this than most probably think.

Also, just to understand this downsized scale a bit better, Vanishing is drifting away on the 16.

Anyone who gives We Belong Together any less than a 10 needs immediate psychiatric attention.
