Russia 2019: Sergey Lazarev - Scream

'The song that he will compete with is not yet known, but it is written by Greek composer Dimitris Kontopoulos, who has written eight Eurovision entries over the years, including Lazarev’s 2016 entry You Are The Only One. In the Russian team this year we also find Fokas Evangelinos as stage director, Ilias Kokotos as project manager and vocal coach Alex Panayi, who previously represented Cyprus twice (1995 and 2000).'

Beautiful.

Also, never forget:

It’s apparently a ballad. The team behind it don’t exactly fill me with excitement but it’s good to see Russia making an effort again.

A BALLAD?

Oh FUCK OFF, I got EXCITED for a minute...

I think Sheena's said it all really.

Sergey would be fantastic with an upbeat song with solid choreo and no bizarre gimmicks like last time. A ballad would be underwhelming.

This thread has just led me into a 20 minute Sergey LOOP before bed. I'd forgotten JUST HOW GOOD a ridiculous uptempo STOMPER he could manage BACK IN THE DAY...

The songwriters are the same as You’re The Only One which was fun but was straight out of Eurovision 2005. They haven’t definitely said it’s a ballad, but that’s what the rumours are saying.

The song might have been out of 2005 but that staging was out of 2025 so they’d better bring it this year

Arse reveal too plz spasiba

And of course this is hauntingly familiar of Dima Bilan, coming very close to a win in 2006, then returning a few years later with a ballad, a gimmick and an open shirt to snatch the trophy

NO love that's DERBAC C! I'm WELL ACQUAINTED with the LAVENDER LATHER :disco:

Fingers crossed SÉRGE has left the shaver alone since 2016 too

Google it- it’s LONG gone. I got a BLANK LOOK last time I went to Boots and then had to explain how I had HEADLICE but I’d like to try something that worked on the PUBES TOO, just to be SAFE...

They literally have it in my local pharmacy!

OMG I KNEW THEY WERE DODGY

That's not winning.

But I might be slightly biased with the Netherlands being second with the bookmakers at the moment.

Oh dear

There’s only one thing for it and that’s a wind machine on full blast and a open shirt

I quite like it. On first listen I prefer it dramatically to the Netherlands.

Underwhelming, but I don't dislike it.

And I'm sure the staging will be anything but underwhelming.

I love the overblown drama of it all. I just wish the chorus was a bit different. Or maybe just different words from "they scream", as this means the whole song is lyrically built around a pretty shit concept.

Musically it reminds me of Czech Republic’s 2016 zero pointer ‘I Stand’ - though I’m sure there’ll be more to Russia’s stage show than Sergey ripping out his bun.

I do like it, but it’s not screaming instant winner like I think they hoped it would. With impressive staging, I can see it in the top 5, if not even higher.

Oh it’s got to be a lock for the top 5 on name alone. But it’s going to need to be a real moment to grab the victory.

It was always going to be difficult as the successor to last year's MAGNUM OPUS but this really is a load of DATED OLD SHITE.

I do think it’s worth remembering that in a decade where songs like ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’, ‘Calm After The Storm’, ‘1994’ and ‘Amar pelos dois’ all created an atmosphere or feeling on stage and weren’t necessarily the catchiest or most obvious successes, that this could emerge as something of a dark horse.

That being said, it would require Russia to add a heavy dose of heart into the performance, and how likely is that?

It actually reminds me of Loreen’s ‘Statements’ in that it’s clearly been constructed with a big performance in mind, but can cold, calculated Russia pull that off?

I don't think that's as bad as everybody is saying...the strings are lovely and (at least) the East of Europe are going to absolutely eat it up.

I still think it's a top 3 lock.
I'm assuming the animation in the video is some sort of hint at the performance - I doubt Russia will fuck this up staging-wise. Rousing drama is much easier to bring to the stage than something cool and innovative.
