WORST YEAR EVER?

1986-89 are seemingly quite low on the CLASSICS although I haven’t delved in properly.

2002 was quite shit all around and had a SHIT winner to top it all off, as was 2011.

2015 wasn’t TOO BAD quality wise but the show itself was fucking INTERMINABLE

2017 was also quite shit with a lot of the good stuff not making it past the semis.

1. 2011
2. 2002
3. 2017
4. 2015

Hmmm Blanche, Lucie, VERONA, Joci Papai, Artsvik and NORMA JOHN aside it’s all a bit MEH

And even then only Blanche and Joci did vaguely well out of that lot.

I'll go for either 1994 or 2011 - both examples of years with a few glittering highs but barely ANYTHING to be getting on with past those. 2011 probably worse on the basis of having half as many entries again and still just as few highlights.

As for the BEST ever year I think 2021 JUST pips the likes of 2012 and 2016 to the post for moi.

2011 is quite bad and the worst in recent memory, topped off by a bad (and forgotten) winner. 2020 certainly wouldn’t have been a classic.

I have never been a fan of 2001 or 2002 but perhaps more for the somewhat shoddy production more than anything else.

You mean ANJA and DIHAJ! :oi:

2017 had its moments but they certainly weren't Lucie or Norma. Verona was a load of piss dribble too.

2011 and 2013

Also I’ve been kind of off Eurovision since 2017 and so none of these recent years have been memorable for me.

I usually forget about each year’s contest as soon as it’s over which apparently includes erasing any memory of most of the songs, based on the times I’ve looked back and thought, well, I don’t remember THAT one. Obviously there are EXCEPTIONS :disco:

Definitely 2011 of the years since I've been watching it. But I'm sure there's worse before that.

I know I'm a "Running Scared" apologist, but I think 2011 gets a hard time - OK it was rough seeing Haba Haba, Celebrate, Ding Dong and (the poorly aged) I Love Belarus all crash and burn in the semi-finals, but we still had KATI WOLF! Getter Jani! Eric Saade! Jedward (for the fellow pervs)! Plus a genuinely great UK entry.

Not that I can bring myself to name any year that I've actively followed all through NF season. 1992 sounded rough from having it on in the background last night.

There are two big problems with 2011

The Winner
The running order (virtually all the good stuff is spaffed away in the first 10 songs)

Song for song I think it’s a decent year. I’d put it above 2010 in that regard.

2010 is one which really seems to sneak under the radar for some reason, but god it's a dog of a year

I think 2002 gets a hard rap. It's shit, but generally much more at the endearing end of the spectrum. I mean it has a jawdropping number of all-time comedy classics for a single contest

2002 will always hold a special place in my heart thanks to a certain LADY IN RED.

I haven't watched it recently (hurry up Eurovision Again) but I was in full loon mode in the lead-up to it so remember it being strong.

On second thoughts maybe I shouldn't do a rewatch.

How much is your feeling about a year swayed by the winner? Honestly
For me it’s not just the winner but also the production side of things that can make or break a year for me. I like quite a lot of the songs from 2015 (and the winner even though it wasn’t my favourite) but the show itself was absolutely shite so it’s certainly moved down my favourites pile.

Same goes for 2012, brilliant songs but the shows themselves were just so STALE and DULL which makes rewatches a bit of a slog.

yeah I get that, it’s sort of why I felt 2021 was a bit of a wet fart, the hosting was just so blah. I get that for 2015, though 2012’s songs were just SO good it sort of blasts it all out of the way, as well as Euphoria being the big victory

The hosting was functional (though NikkieTutorials :disco:) but the quality of songs, then the drama of the voting reveals means it is up there for me.

Switching it the other way I’d say 2013 is one year that had a pretty average bunch of songs that was greatly improved by the hosting.

well I’m not getting into the voting drama/Trauma porn but, I did really get into it this year, I think I’m more likely to listen to the songs than watch the show again though.

but then it is still quite fresh, I always need a bit of distance after the overload of the season (and Moopy).

I wonder if we will look back at 2021 as a turning point, what with so many foreign language songs doing well, launching Måneskin worldwide etc. or at least a precursor of the next decade’s flavour

It feels like waking up on a Monday morning getting ready for work only to find out there's a 24hours strike on the metro, the bus transportation and the taxis and all you can do is make use of one of your paid leave days. A combination of helplessness and that this can't be happening.

2004 really hasn't aged well (not least because of the awful sound quality, especially in the semi)

I'm used to exceptional years having the shine taken off them a little by the winner so I tend not to factor it in much if there was a great year song-wise going on otherwise. Basically things like winners and hosting quality tend to be put on a ratchet for me - I don't expect much from them, so they don't tend to take a year down (unless they make it unwatchable, like 1991), but actively good examples of them can take a year up.

In terms of stuff outside the songs affecting my opinion though, 2012 DOES get taken down for how unwatchable the voting sequence with the DEAD AUDIENCE is.

I've never actually seen 2002 because Kylie had the audacity to schedule her London tour dates to clash with Eurovision. Glad I didn't miss much.
