I wonder if we all love The Day Before You Came so much because its their best unknown track. The one the masses haven't got their grubby little hands on yet.

It didn't even make the final cut of Mamma Mia 2, although the Meryl's candlelight version is lovely:

Although the Margaret Atwood and House of Cards line are quite jarring.

And DQ really has suffered from overplay. I don't get the same chills from it that I used to. Although hearing it unexpectedly when drunk remains EVERYTHING.
Same and there was one time it came on when I was drunk and my friend and I both CRIED / DANCED to it and it was indeed EVERYTHING

(May I clarify here that I DO have more than one FRIEND but that one's my ABBA friend and Dancing Queen is her song and no she's not BASIC she just loves ABBA and DANCING QUEEN OK.)

At the risk of sounding ridiculous, approaching the entire ABBA back catalogue is a bit like going to view the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London. You recognise all the big showy pieces of finery because they're wheeled out all the time ('Dancing Queen', 'Take A Chance On Me', 'Mamma Mia' et al), but the smaller pieces tucked away in the collection are sometimes far more exquisite and tasteful than the gaudier lurid crowns, orbs and sceptres that everyone knows.

My mate was having a terrible night out at a club and I requested it for her. The absolute joy when it came on dedicated to her. She may not be able to walk but her pointing game during the "you can dance" line was mesmerising.

Also you can't dance to it

1. Knowing Me Knowing You
2. The Name Of The Game
3. Voulez-Vous
4. Lay All Your Love On Me
5. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)
6. Chiquitita
7. Fernando
8. Head Over Heels
9. Super Trouper
10. The Day Before You Came (like mentioned, I started to listen to it more since I Saw the Mamma Mia sequel)

Sidebar: I just had a massive freakout to the slightly ever so pitchy Lovers (Live A Little Longer) chorus vox and I feel ALIVE.

Dancing Queen is horribly overplayed, but the sheer euphoria of that glorious piano led crescendo in the chorus immediately after 'having the time of your life' is perhaps the most exquisite thing I've ever heard. It really is the aural equivalent of a finger to my g spot.

And I don't think that vocal blend will ever be beaten. There are Abba songs I prefer to Angeleyes, but it gets my #1 (for now, at least) just because of those vocals. I don't think there's a better example of that 'third voice', and listening to the song knowing their voices individually and together is remarkable - how they alternately sweep and soar and how they are layered.

I can't with 'Angeleyes' sometimes and yes it's my earliest musical memory now that I've cancelled MJ

Rewatching (& relistening bien sur as it's very relistenable) right now and oh! Agnetha's lipgloss is sending me.

The critical appreciation has been a long time coming, but now we all know that 'Dancing Queen' is forever more going to be regarded as 3 minutes and 50 seconds of (overplayed) timeless pop perfection.

Speaking of performances of iconic tracks I think their Melodifestivalen performance of Waterloo was more polished. They look way less nervous.

The Winner Takes It All belongs there too but I just don’t really listen to

The ones I play the most are not necessarily the ones I'd acknowledge as the best (whatever that means anyway).

I could happily listen to just about anything they've recorded, but the ones I've never tired of in the past 40 years would be:

The Visitors
Lay All Your Love On Me
Why Did It Have To Be Me
One Of Us
As Good As New
I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do
If It Wasn't For The Nights
Soldiers
Bang-A-Boomerang
Slipping Through My Fingers

Notable mention for the incredible screechathon of the "Pick A Bale Of Cotton/On Top Of Old Smokey/Midnight Special" medley which never fails to raise a chuckle :D

Oh, and the Matt Pop mix of "Just Like That" :disco:

That sax in "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" is just heaven to me and Benny pounding the piano keys sends it into the stratosphere.

Oh how I love a bit of lolloping schlager :D

Top 5 "Rarities":

1. Just Like That (Na Na Mix)
2. Summer Night City (Disco Strings Intro Mix)
3. Åh, vilka tider
4. Sång till Görel
er
5. ?

Let's face it, it's slim pickings and the stuff stolen from the boot of Benny's car is probably the best of the lot. I bet those much vaunted vaults are EMPTY.

I suspect anything that may be left could be filed under 'interesting bits' rather than being very good.

Incidentally, the 'Thank You For The Music' box set is back on Spotify, so we can all enjoy Abba Undeleted again.
