Hello lurkers - I'm talking to you

It's tempting to just stay in the forum, not registered and just read our Eurovision expert opinions. FACT: Our Moopyvision Preview voting things predict the winner 12% of the time. This is not an actual fact and does not constitute a legal guarantee

If you register you get all these benefits:

* You can vote in Moopyvisions
* You can slag off every one of Little My's opinions
* I hear rumours that some people provide links to mp3 files on request - this is illegal and not condoned by Moopy
* You get an avatar.
* You will lose weight and get a couple of inches in height
* You can receive PMs from Daz Sampson (but only if you slag off Stockport)

In the words of Lotta Engberg "Stick together, it's now or never, if you join us, we'll dance forever". And if you don't know who Lotta Engberg is, you should definitely join.

If you are too boring to think of an original first post, then here's a questionnaire for you to answer. In fact, established posters, you do it too.

Questionnaire

Hmm. I certainly remember Gina G and Dana International. In terms of actually paying close attention I think since 2000, with 2002 being the first year I loved songs that didn't win or come from the UK (Ira Losco, Sahlene, Afro-Dite)

Quickly, name three countries whose entries you generally like
Sweden, Malta, Belarus

Shocking. Completely shocking. Remedy this immediately. 1973, 1977 and 1978 are must-knows.

Ooh 73 and 77 are wonderful! Particularly Anne-Marie!

78 I wasn't keen on...

How are you not curious enough to look at all the past winners? You spend so much time in this forum.

And Anne-Marie David's winner is fabulous. One of the many reasons that Hermes666 thread is a classic.

To be honest I'm much more into Melodifestivalen than I am Eurovision, and even there there's a LOT I don't know. I got the 50 År Box-set the other day and discovered loads I'd never heard.

But I should make more of an effort to familiarise myself. I'm missing out on a lot of good stuff.

Actually this is as good an opportunity as any to ask one of my amateur questions. When did the 'singing in your native language' rule come into play? I assumed it ran from the beginning until 1999, but then ABBA won with Waterloo in English didn't they?

...1970s?

Oh dear.

...1960s?

Pass.

Can you sing any of the winning songs from the 1950s?

Nope!

If you had a Eurovision song played at your funeral, which would it be?

'Avundsjuk' - simply so Nanne would have to strut down the aisle!

Is CatCat's Bye Bye Baby the greatest Finnish song ever?

Well, it must be better than Lordi!

Which is your favourite nil points entry ever? (You can pick Pierro and the Music Stars, Little My)

Probably Jemini, mainly cause it caused uproar and managed to get Cheryl 'I clean shit from toilets' Baker back on the BBC.

Actually this is as good an opportunity as any to ask one of my amateur questions. When did the 'singing in your native language' rule come into play? I assumed it ran from the beginning until 1999, but then ABBA won with Waterloo in English didn't they?

The rule requiring countries to sing in their own national language has been changed several times over the years. From 1956 until 1965, there was no rule restricting the languages in which the songs could be sung. However, in 1966 a rule was imposed stating that the songs must be performed in one of the official languages of the country participating.

The language restriction continued until 1973, when it was lifted and performers were again free to sing in any language they wished. Several winners in the mid-1970s took advantage of the newly-found freedom, with performers from non-native-English-speaking countries singing in English, including ABBA in 1974.

In 1977, the EBU decided to revert to the national language restriction. However, special dispensation was given to Germany and Belgium as their national song selection procedures were already too advanced to change.

In 1999, the rule was changed again to allow freedom of language once more. This linguistic freedom led to the Belgian entry in 2003, Sanomi, being sung in an entirely fictional language. In 2006 the Dutch entry, Amambanda, was sung partly in English and partly in an artificial language.

I liked the singing in one of the official languages rule but could quite understand why it was done away with.

Not that the UK would've had any advantage singing in a universal language these days.

Probably no surprise to most that I've only just discovered this play count thing. :manson:

To be honest, no.

You're desperate for Eurovision forum members, and let's face it, I'm far more knowledgable than VoR it seems. :)

But you didn't ask me to compare your knowledge to that of a box of rocks, to be fair.
