Eurovision Song Contest: Little-known artist set to be UK's hopeful
Molly Smitten-Downes has been touring the UK with a multi-instrumental band
The BBC is set to announce the UK's 2014 Eurovision entrant, with rumours strongly suggesting it will be newcomer
Molly Smitten-Downes.
This year's contestant was chosen through the BBC's Introducing strand, which champions undiscovered talent.
It marks a break with the UK's recent choices, which have relied on veteran names such as Bonnie Tyler and Engelbert Humperdinck.
Both fared poorly at the contest, with Tyler finishing 19th in 2013.
Guy Freeman, the BBC's executive producer for Eurovision, said in a
recent blog post: "We took the view that we needed a bespoke, contemporary song, written specifically to suit the conditions of the competition - rather than trying to get lucky with a pre-existing track from an artist."
He added their chosen artist has also written the UK's entry from scratch, specifically for Eurovision.
In a flurry of social media activity on Sunday night, 26-year-old Smitten-Downes was named as the Eurovision entry by several people at a London video shoot for her song.
The name of her song is Children of the Universe, according to a number of Twitter users.
The musician came to the attention of BBC Introducing with her track
Strange Alien, and won best song at the Best of British Unsigned Music awards last year.
Both artist and song will be made officially public in a presentation on the
BBC Red Button at 1930 GMT on Monday.
Freeman has called it a "powerful and impressive song that we hope will do us proud in Copenhagen".
The grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest takes place in the Danish capital on 10 May.
