In years gone by this sales week would have been classed as the last sales week of the chart year as there are more days in the sales week that fall in December than in January but the OCC now seem to have a cut off point of the last Thursday in the year.

I do feel that the notion that Lewis Capaldi "sold" 2.3million ludicrous tho'. It is in no way the equivalent to the million-sellers of yore.

The track at number 3, 'I Don't Care' by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber, has one of the strangest chart runs of all time. On the chart dated 19/07/19 the track fell from number 2 to nowhere only to re-enter the chart the following week at number 3. The reason is that on the 19/07/19 it was the fourth biggest selling track by Ed Sheeran and was therefore removed from the charts under the "three songs by an act" chart rule. The track was on ACR and therefore its streams were being reduced. Had the track still been on SCR it would have been at number 1.

This just cements the fact that these days the charts are a complete and utter joke!

I agree, there's simply no comparison. A million seller was considered to be a milestone, something that most records would never achieve. Now it's something that is fairly common with it being achieved on average once every 5 weeks.

And just think how many platinum single certfications there are now. I remember the days when they reduced the threshold from 1m to 600k as some years there weren't ANY platinum singles.

Yup, the threshold was reduced 31 years ago this very week. At the same time compilation albums were booted from the main albums chart and into a Compilation Albums chart. The beneficiary from this was 'The Innocents' by Erasure which climbed to number 1 while the best selling album of the week (Now 13) topped the newly formed Compilation Albums chart.

The first single to be certified Platinum under the new threshold of 600,000? 'Swing the Mood' by Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers... a few weeks later at least we had a decent record get a Platinum award, the still excellent 'Ride On Time' by Black Box.

It's good timing as tomorrow sees BBC4 showing The Story Of 1989 and a 1989 Hits programme with the repeats of the weekly editions of Top Of The Pops from 1989 starting next week.
