How will it do?

Ben Mawson from TaP appeared on the Eurovisioncast a couple of days ago and said a few interesting things;

-There were 5 names in the running(including Mae).
-They(TaP) had a song they really liked but it just didn't suit any of the potential artists.
- I Wrote A Song had just been written a few weeks before they started talking with Mae. She suggested it, they played it to multiple people in the industry for their feedback, and decided it was the song.
- They are aware it's a total departure from what they picked last year. This was kind of intentional, wanted to show a different side of British music(made comparisons to Little Mix and Girls Aloud, Dua Lipa).
- The song is only 2:40 but the perfomance will make use of the full 3 minutes.
- Its great that attitudes towards Eurovision are changing in the UK but there's still a lot of hesitation and reluctance from bigger names(he hinted that they were in talks at some point with someone quite established/at least more established than Mae.
- She's a total hoot, and has the same kind of enthusiasm as Sam(although he's hardly going to say she's been dragged into this kicking and screaming is he 😆).

It's going to take years of decent results for this to change- and especially considering they couldn't persuade anyone bigger for a "home" Eurovision with this much publicity.

This is all incredibly positive and shows (what we kind of knew anyway) that TaP really do seem to know what they're doing. She seems awesome and I'm confident that'll come through in her performance and gain a couple of points through the sheer likeability factor.

I wasn't bowled over when she was announced but I'm feeling more and more positive the more I hear.

I liked that they said they had a song they liked but nobody it suited - at least they’re not just attaching any old session singer to it and chucking it at Eurovision.

Mae does seem like another great personality, which was essential after Sam was such a positive force at the contest last year.

Good to know!

Something about that image is telling me she was at gunpoint when expressing her 'excitement'.

Brilliant start. First time ever in the streaming era to be in the chart prior to the week of I think? Ignoring those that bordered it and were released digitally when sales still ruled the chart.

Top 30 as well. Who would’ve thought?!

I’m assuming Gina G, but I’m not sure how far out they released it prior. It was at least five or six weeks but not sure if 8. I assume pre-streaming they wouldn’t usually release the physical single until closer to the time?

Gina went in at #6 on the chart for 6th April 1996. The Contest was held on 18 May that year, and she went to #1 on the 25th may.

Honestly, I really think it'd just take 2-3 years of the BBC giving solid promotional support for 3-6 months as standard to whichever artist gets chosen each year and a couple more Snap type hits for entries that don't make the top 10 for most artists to come around to the idea that whatever downside risk there is is worth the gamble. There just aren't anywhere near as many rock solid promotional opportunities as there used to be - not that I'm hugely fussed either way on us picking someone necessarily bigger, so long as our choices carry on in this kind of vein really.

This is ticking along very nicely on streaming, at a quicker pace than Sam it's worth noting. She'll get a top 10 out of it I reckon.

I am starting worry it's going to slip through the cracks in Liverpool though.

It seems to be very visible at the minute and I always think it’s a good sign when the UK is behind its own act, since it gets picked up on that we’re taking it seriously. It being a bonafide UK top 40 hit won’t go unnoticed abroad, either.
It really will all come down to the staging whether it competes with the other bangers, but I’m willing to trust Tap despite my earlier protests.
