2023 Christmas No.1

And especially because Lewis used to say the CDs were limited to 500 signed copies which mysteriously turned into 20000 copies when the sales were revealed. The other time he said his label ordered too many by mistake and they had to sell them cheap but he offered to sign them as a kind gesture :D

Did Andrew Ridgeley have little input in to Last Christmas? I am assuming he will get very little royalties from it?

Do all Last Christmas royalties still go to Band Aid, anyway?

Ridgeway must still make a fortune from Careless Whisper, in any case.

Yes it was introduced in August, presumably after Lewis Capaldi got multiple #1s that way. You can still sell 99p CDs or cassettes but they cannot be signed as that’s seen as an incentive to purchase.

Interesting. Yet, you can release 52 versions of a song and they all get in (the actual number The Kun...erm, the Krackpots have released!)

It's interesting to hear that Cher was only added to that list yesterday. I'm just slightly annoyed they didn't put it higher. And that they haven't bumped The Pogues up.

And it enters Spotify for the first time at #64. If you ever needed any proof that playlisting essentially designs the chart (In a good way being that it’s Cher, but it really is nuts).

That's good - and effectively (in terms of final chart) it's better than that as she isn't on ACR like the majority of those above her.

Do we know if the OCC has ever tried to exclude streams from standardised playlists, and effectively restrict the chart to streams people have chosen to listen to? I’m assuming Spotify would refuse to release the required data and give up the power/payola.

In 2021, Michael’s estate said “We are also pleased to be able to continue donating George’s record royalties from sales/streaming from this track to charitable causes close to his heart as he did for so many years.”

After posting the other day about Spotify promoting new Christmas songs, I've discovered this playlist. But as it doesn't have the word Christmas in it, it doesn't come up when you search for 'Christmas'. At least call it 'New Music Christmas' so more people find it! I found it by searching for Cher and then seeing what playlists she's featured on.

I sense I have experienced the average person responsible for the Christmas charts

My dear old parents chucking on the Spotify Christmas Hits playlist, and proclaiming it to be some sort of radical innovation

"Listen to this, isn't Spotify fantastic? No need to search, this playlist is COMPREHENSIVE. All of the classics!"

Only for 5 minutes later after they've pressed skip for the seventh time "... what is all of this 1940s crooner shit? What the hell is a Burl Ives? Where the fuck is Slade?"

They could just add Slade and Wizzard and any other Christmas song (that doesn't have the word faggot in it) and they would become hits in the US and would go high in the UK charts again

Well really the Spotify intern could also just sneak "Take Your Shoes Off" by the Cheeky Girls into the playlist and it would suddenly become a worldwide Christmas hit

You could even make the argument that it's culturally relevant again thanks to its appearence in a GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATED movie this year.

Ugh. I wish I looked at this before I sent my ASFXmas entry.

Creator Universe’s odds are starting to drift because they can’t even stay at #1 on iTunes ahead of Joss Stone and Lorraine Kelly :eyes:

The absurdity of the story centering around how he’s heading for #1 even though nobody knows it

The OCC should be embarrassed by that

Yes, it's utter bullshit. It's like the BBC are covering the story yet completely missing the point.

Interesting to see Last Christmas, although holding at #1, dipping in sales by 9% week on week. It's now at the same level it was last year for the same week - but last year it had grown 11% from the week before.

I noticed last weekend that both Wham! and Mariah were both down on the weekend before, which surprised me. Presumably it continued throughout the week.

It's not really a news article about the charts the BBC have published though. It's essentially a Sam Ryder interview / puff piece, and they just picked the charts as an angle. He's not even realistically going to be number one. He's only just scraped into the top ten as it is.

More intriguing is the possibility of Noah Kahan leapfrogging the Xmas hits to pole position.
