We can do messy elections too

Is the French electoral system, which seems to be AV with extra steps, really the PR system to hold up here? Also, interesting that leftists in the UK are so vocal about wanting PR, while in PR dominated Europe a lot of left wing parties only recourse is to cut all kinds of deals to try to get back to something closer to first past the post.![]()
I've always enjoyed Ballot Box Scotland's commentary on the electoral system, and this is a good criticism of Scotland's system, and potential fixesMy preference would be Irish style multi member constituencies with STV.
I like the aim of AMS, but I don’t like party lists, and there’s too much scope for gaming the system for my liking.
That was a good read. I should read their briefing on Scandinavian-style PR, as I’ve never really understood the weirder bits of the Swedish (and Danish?) systems.I've always enjoyed Ballot Box Scotland's commentary on the electoral system, and this is a good criticism of Scotland's system, and potential fixes

SP21 – Reforming AMS
Sure, Holyrood is unlikely to vote for my hyper-proportional, FPTP-free preferred voting system. But there are some solid, yet mild, reforms to AMS that could vastly improve it.ballotbox.scot
It’s the same coalition that was formed during the 2022 legislative election. It kind of worked and got about as many MPs as the far right. With Macron getting the most, with only a relative majority though.![]()

The Hungarian left tried this a couple of years ago and absolutely tanked, as the electorate didn’t seem to buy that the parties could govern together on a coherent manifesto. Hope it goes better for the French.

I’ll you guys guess Macron’s voting instructions for his base in these casesThis time though, Macron’s chances are at an all time low. And many more second rounds are going to end up being Left vs. Far Right.
Move here bbz xIt’s terrifying and frankly quite disgusting to be living in an openly racist country. There’s really one absolute CUNT to thank for this mess.
He can't because YOU LOT voted to END HIS FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT HEREMove here bbz x
Wait, I thought the runoff was already between the top two?

No I mean I thought the runoff was only meant to be between the top two candidates if neither achieved over 50%, so I'm confused why Macron even has to pull third placers at all. It’s in a week beb.
A candidate needs 12.5% of registered voters to qualify for the runoff. No I mean I thought the runoff was only meant to be between the top two candidates if neither achieved over 50%, so I'm confused why Macron even has to pull third placers at all.
Trump, soon to the west of me.
Le Pen to the east.
Here I am, relieved that a kind, witty centrist party is about to restore some sanity.

kind, witty centrist party
I mean it was gonna happen in three years if not now. how is Macron to blame for France's overall, consistent, decade-plus slide toward a full embrace of the hard right? There’s really one absolute CUNT to thank for this mess.
No presidency has demonised the left the way Macron did. Not even the despicable Sorkozy. Under Macron the soft Socialists are moderate Greens are the far left. And the actual left is not even considered Republican but portrayed as a danger to the Republic.I mean it was gonna happen in three years if not now. how is Macron to blame for France's overall, consistent, decade-plus slide toward a full embrace of the hard right?
No, absolutely not. And it was made perfectly clear last night by the leaders of the left that not a single vote should go to the far right.I think this kind of sums up the problem. As someone reading DC's post, you would think that Macron and the Far Right are the same, or just as bad as one another. This is not true. Macron, for his many, many faults, is far better proposition for France and Europe than the RN.
But his brand has become so damaged, particularly in the eyes of supporters of the RN and the LFI, that it's almost become as toxic to say you vote Macron as saying you voted RN.
People need to get real and recognise that politics is not idealism. It's trade-offs and sacrifices. And that an imperfect centrist government is better than a Far Right one.
We do nowDo we have a French election thread?
