I always thought Perfect Illusion smacked a bit of "hmm I need something boppy to launch the album with" and she cobbled it together in a rush. It just doesn't have a THEME or a MESSAGE. It's fine, but bland.

:nononono:

Whilst it definitely has the same vibes as her earlier stuff there is a very clear evolution and is in no way a reject of a previous album.

Though if we could have an official release of Nothing On But The Radio please and thank you, this Gaga Stan does want that.

Just found out that her catsuit from the video was done from one my favorite designers of all damn time. Officially 10/10 for me now.

He was the same guy who designed this dress on Madonna from 1998

I was surprised to see that Judas has more streams than Born This Way nowadays. Was there a Bloody Mary-esque TikTok revival?
Judas and Bloody Mary being the real hits from Born This Way was the twist that we couldn’t see coming in 2011. But Gags did tell us that it was ahead of its time and it would take us years to truly appreciate it :disco:

It's true though. Her videos got more and more bloated and self indulgent after that. Who the hell even sat through Marry the Night? Aside from Rain On Me which was fun for 2020 she hasn't really done anything noteworthy in the last decade. Abracagaga does what Bad Romance did but in a more streamlined way.

I certainly don't remember the last time a Gaga song was stuck in my head this much since Fame Monster.

Except for Perfect Illusion of course.

You may say I lost everything, but I still had my bedazzler :disco:
This is probably my favourite Gaga moment ever. If you start the Marry The Night at that point, it's just a five minute exercise in being an Aries. :disco:

Take note Katy. THIS is how you save a dying pop career.

She literally released the single while being #1 on the global pop charts with a song that has almost 2bn streams on spotify alone in less than 6 months!

How is that saving a dying career :D

DWAS gave her a boost for sure, but this is by far her biggest solo hit since Applause?

There was definitely a narrative, at least, that Bruno catapulted DWAS. This demonstrates she’s still a formidable force in her own right as opposed to a legacy act or second fiddle. Some even wrote her off with that Joker side project.

Tbf Gags had had at least one huge global smash from each era before Abra (Shallow, Rain On Me and Die With A Smile) since Katy even last troubled the lower regions of the top 10! Yes there have been lows, but she's remained very much near the top of the game.

Whilst I actually agree, it’s notable that every single one of those is a collaboration and, in two cases, movie tie in. It feels like a long time since she’s had a proper, bonafide hit under just her own steam.

1. She is a generous queen so she did a lot of collabs
2. She didn't want to peak too soon

:basil:

But in all seriousness, people calling Shallow "a collab" as if Bradley Cooper is a streaming titan... c'mon now. Ariana and Bruno, fine. And lest we forget that Always Remember Us This Way (despite low peaks and no official release) is a streaming monster, and entirely solo.

To be fair, that’s exactly why I pulled the movie tie in comment out- it was about that rather than him.

yeah to be honest her solo non-soundtrack hits of the last decade are...

Million Reasons
The Cure
Stupid Love

and two of those were debatably not really hits. Abra's success on that front is well overdue.

Why are we even excluding a soundtrack as her success though? I don't see The Bodyguard being erased from the successsful part of Whitney's chart legacy, just because it was a soundtrack. It seems like for Gaga people are regulalrly trying to look for a reason why something isn't 'her' success, a hit is a hit is a hit, and Star Is Born soundtrack was huge for her.

Also re the collabs, I don't know the stats, but looking at the charts these days collabs seem almost as common as solo tracks. Therefore if everyone else is scoring hits this way, why is it not a success fpr Gaga when Gaga does so? Sure she benefitted from Ariana a bit with ROM, but I would say DWAS success is as much down to her as Bruno.

Anyway, my original point was Katy could only dream of the success Gags had had this past decade, and I firmly stand by that.

Why is poor Katy even in this conversation? They're not remotely attempting to compete.

Gaga is trying to get $, a streaming count, and a designer for the Met Gala. Katy was trying to make the world SEXY CONFIDENT and rid us of pesky nuisance sand dunes.
