Because it's shit in a tin.

It makes me even more ashamed to be British. FUCK YOU BBC (until the next ep of Gladiators xx)

I am increasingly confident that we're coming last

Yeah, like Austria I’m sceptical that vocals alone guarantee them a big jury score.

Plus even if the juries do come through for them, the high likelihood of another televote zero moment will probably render it pretty meaningless either way.

We haven't even seen these three very stage school girls in action yet. They might have something exciting up their sleeves (a big trumpet or grotty grouting perhaps).

Fantastic start for the UK :eyes:

Their record label boss is ALW's son and he couldn't get his dad to hand over 'It's My Time: The Threequel'. Rude.

The band will play at all the official Eurovision pre-parties, starting in Amsterdam on April 5 before heading to London on April 13 and then Madrid on April 19.

But the group will also visit destinations further afield and play their Eurovision song in countries which don’t host official pre-parties.

Speaking exclusively to The Euro Trip at a tea party event in London this week, Billy Webber, the co-founder of Remember Monday’s record label The Other Songs, said: “That’s the plan, especially in countries that absolutely love Eurovision.

“We want to take that energy everywhere we go.

“They will be performing at the pre-parties which is obviously very important and fantastic.

“We’d also like to get them into some other countries, and they would too.”

Webber was not in a position this week to confirm the other destinations on Remember Monday’s pre-Eurovision tour.

The Other Songs was co-founded by Billy Webber and his brother Alastair in 2018.

The Other Songs has just 18 members of staff on its books, but this small workforce isn’t something that Billy thinks is limiting for the Eurovision project.

“We don’t want to scare the Eurovision lovers out there – just because there’s a small team doesn’t mean not much can happen.

“We’re 18 people, but 18 very talented people working incredibly hard on making this the biggest success that it can be and we’re ready for it.”

God, they're really not beating the allegations that this sad sad doom spiral is a result of no major label or artist being willing to touch it with a bargepole.

I don't know how I feel about this. A few years ago we actively bemoaned the fact that the UK felt above all the usual touring and promo and now we're slagging them off for it? What's the record company manager supposed to say? "Oh, we realise we're shit and are going to do well to avoid the bottom of the scoreboard, but hey ho, we're giving it a go"?

I do agree with the "no major label or artist being willing to touch it with a bargepole" comment, though. That's obvious. I still think that's more to do with Israel than anything else...

Yeah to be fair im not sure what there is to chortle at here(irrespective of whether an act is a no hoper or a hot favourite)....Eurovision act does the usual standard pre parties, tests out their performancein a live setting before the conest and promotes???

I’m happy that they’re promoting it, and perhaps I am being a little harsh, but my :eyes: reactions were down to a few things.

* Parallels with this time last year when the label claimed they wanted Olly to be #1 in ten countries or something, and they couldn’t even get it into the top 40 in the UK.

* The fact that, reading between the lines a bit, this is all being handled by some obscure vanity label with minimal resources beyond second generation Lloyd Webber money. The BMG days are clearly long gone…

* “We really want to take them around the world and get them bookings in all the countries” [no such bookings actually exist beyond the pre-parties, which are nice but pretty much the bare minimum]

Olly is an interesting one. They clearly set their sights high but the song really wasn't all that special(although I'm not convinced anything else would have faired better).

It really needed the right performance to elevate it but what we got were mediocre vocals and staging that whilst you could argue was impressive was off-putting to many and I think many probably wrongly mis-read as us still taking the piss

I agree that sadly the days of major labels being interested are off the table for now but I think the above points also demonstrate that a major label being involved doesn't mean they can't fuck it up.

I might not have all the facts right here, but wasn't "Raincatchers" by Birdy considered as the follow-up entry to Sam Ryder?

I remember thinking this would have been such a good choice. It stood out from the crowd & was so reminiscent of Kate Bush. I figured they'd decided to emulate different British music icons each year (Sam very Elton John & Queen influenced, Birdy with Kate etc) & thought this was such a good way to approach the entries, with lots of different routes they could explore each time.

Instead they went with Mae, & while I like her & the song was a BOP, it was never going to get people picking up the phones even if she'd been decent live. It just didn't stand out from the crowd.

I don't think Remember Monday will be an UNMITIGATED DISASTER as at least they can sing live well, but again, it'll probably inspire televote apathy. The selection process feels effectively directionless again & as has already been noted, what major artist would look at Olly's experience last year & want to repeat that?

Raincatchers wasn't on the table. It was just a rumour that grew legs in the vacuum of genuine information.

What WAS on the table in 2023? Was there anything substantial to the Rina rumours.

I recall @VoR saying he met one of the people involved and them saying Mae Muller was more or less the best option they had left.

No completely dreadful thing I don't think. Song was a hit and it was nice to get out of the rut of the type of entry we'd had pre-Sam - just things moved into a slightly different flop rut. At least the flops have been fun the last two years though.

Yes, I spoke to a friend of a friend who was involved in the 2023 selection, and his response to why Mae was chosen was basically to shrug and say "She said yes and she was available".

I think the availability factor is as much of an issue as reputational damage. You're asking an artist to essentially block out months of work for a high risk, potentially low reward endeavour.

Other countries manage it, but even lower down the food chain, established UK acts are more likely to be working around the world as well as locally. See also the gap in Sweden between 'Melfest stars' and the Swedish acts with substantive international careers.

I think we (should) all agree with this. The last two years haven't been RIGHT, but they've been inventive enough and shown some kind of progression- they weren't EMBARRASSING (as entries at least).

THIS YEAR on the other hand, all feels a bit ELECTRO VELVET.

I still think this year has got potential with an interesting performance and some epic VOX. At least it will show we are still making an effort.

No. I'm sure she was ASKED, but basically what @VoR said which is that Mae was available and willing. There was a decent amount of interest in principle among artists and managements to do it, particularly while we were hosting, but when it got down to the detail it just didn't work for most artists. I don't think Mae was confirmed until early-mid Feb. Remember Monday were earlier than that this year at least.

I think we have to accept that Olly was an anomaly in the sense that he's been really keen to do it for years and was determined to make it work, so signed on very early in the process, but even when it came to him there had been a number of failed attempts in previous years.

(it's fine, I'm playing The Pointer Sisters - I'm So Excited on repeat to aid against this)

For reasons I can’t comprehend this is the most viewed performance from last night.

so boring. the kind of thing that a big corporate company would wheel out for after dinner at the WORKS ANNUAL BASH.

They really need to lean into the high energy girls' party vibe for the perf (without just coming off as manic). A relief they can definitely sing.
