2024 Christmas #1 thread

That Elton/Ed song is PERFECTLY FINE

How far behind was Sam Ryder in the end last year?
01 61,784 Wham! - Last Christmas [2,436 vinyl, 1,963 CDs, 2,346 downloads, 55,039 streaming]

02 55,858 Sam Ryder - You're Christmas to Me [2,623 CDs, 9,002 downloads]

Wham! was on ACR and Sam not.

Obviously I've heard the John/Sheeran duet every year, but I have absolutely no recollection of it.

It is cute, but it’s also every other Christmas song rolled into one

I guess that's another side effect of aiming them squarely at a playlist.

I find it hard to judge a Christmas song for a few weeks yet, but can well imagine it will give me all the festive feels if I listen to it semi sozzled on sherry in a month.

I don't really get "Christmassy" any more. As I've said multiple times, my own concession is that I still like to watch The Muppet Christmas Carol on Xmas Eve and I'll pull out my CD of "Wizzard Brew", the utterly bonkers Wizzard album that added "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" as a bonus track on the CD. That's pretty much it.

This week Mariah #38 and Wham! #43.

For the corresponding week last year (the third chart of November), Wham! were #26 and Mariah #28. In 2022 it was Mariah #36 and Wham! #42.

If you look at streaming numbers on Spotify for the third Friday in November it's

2024

Wham! 199k
Mariah 197k

2023

Wham! 240k
Mariah 233k

2022

Mariah 184k
Wham! 171k

I wonder if the mild weather is affecting streaming numbers generally. That's a big drop off, almost 20% yoy.

Thank goodness really. The last few years - since lockdown anyway - it’s been a bit TOO much, streaming wise, for the Christmas songs.

I'm not going to do this every day (just perhaps for the Saturdays until Christmas week), but comparing the last three years for the third Saturday in November:

2024

#11 Mariah 270k
#12 Wham! 262k

2023

#6 Mariah 316k
#7 Wham! 316k

2022

#9 Mariah 250k
#13 Wham! 231k

Singles chart this week

#16 Wham!
#17 Mariah
#34 Brenda Lee
#46 Ariana Grande
#48 The Pogues ft Kirsty MacColl
#51 Bobby Helms
#52 Kelly Clarkson
#60 Shakin' Stevens
#62 Andy Williams
#65 Michael Bublé
#71 Sia

Correspnding week in 2023

#14 Wham!
#16 Mariah
#31 Brenda Lee
#37 Michael Bublé
#38 Ariana Grande
#44 Bobby Helms
#49 Kelly Clarkson
#50 Sam Ryder
#51 Shakin' Stevens
#53 The Pogues ft Kirsty MacColl
#57 Andy Williams
#65 Band Aid
#67 Sia
#69 Dean Martin
#75 Jorja Smith

So all tracks except The Pogues lower than they were last year, and fewer tracks in total in the top 75. I feel like the gap has closed a bit than when comparing the two years last week though - I think it likely has been the weather last week, hasn't it?

And if you look at the number of streams yesterday for Wham! and Mariah, against the corresponding chart last year, it's

2024

Wham! 346k
Mariah 318k

2023

Wham! 363k
Mariah 356k

So the % drop year on year has decreased for both as well, particularly for Wham!

Tom Grennan entered at #83 with his amazon exclusive 'It Can't Be Christmas'. I suspect he won't be as successful as Sam Ryder was last year.

Not that I’m complaining, but where’s the Sheeran one? Wasn’t it charting by now last year?

I thought that myself - but no, he didn't chart until next week last year, when it re-entered at #17.

DJ Play A Christmas Song is no longer on Spotify's biggest Christmas playlist.

It is on this one, which I'm going to put on when I start gift wrapping later, but with fewer than 250k saves compared to 5.9m for the biggest, it looks like she's fucked unless she gets a boost in the next few weeks.

I also have no idea who Laufey is, but how has she managed to get amazon exclusives and such Spotify pimp slots over the last two years?

Oh, and i assume she'll throttle Kylie's Santa Baby streams this year.

I had a similar thought with the Chris Rea track - I was surprised not to see it in the Top 100 this week, but you've just confirmed above that it wasn't in the Top 100 this time last year either.

I could have sworn it had become one of the few 70s/80s tracks to survive the shift towards the more modern Christmas songs and the standards the last few years. That and Elton and Band Aid (and of course Wham!)

I also wasn't aware that Shakin' Stevens was still one of the biggest ones.

I'd say outside of Wham! and The Pogues, Shakin' Stevens has proven to be probably the most enduring 80s Christmas track.

Peak each year

Over the last few years it has outperformed Band Aid, although obviously that's not likely to happen again this year.

Can we expect to see Sabrina Carpenter at some stage or is her current album too popular? She's issuing vinyl of the her Christmas EP and has the Netflix special coming soon.

I’d assume she will do promo around its launch so very much so. Though not necessarily massive - even Taylor has struggled when it comes to getting an Xmas classic.

Let's face it, the degree is only really a question of if Spotify/Apple/Amazon get behind it, isn't it?

I've just been subjected to Elton & Ed for the first time this year

HE'S DONE IT AGAIN

A quick look at Wiki shows many of his latest singles haven’t really done well - so could be a chance this doesn’t explode?

Or Sabrina could just whack something new out and claim another 9 weeks at #1 or something if she wouldn’t MIND

In the mid 10s his albums were selling 1-4 million each in the UK. His last sold 60k. Best decline ever.

Sadly his old stuff rumbles on.
