A Journey Through SAW

I wonder what cost more, the obviously QUITE PRICEY choreo or the Elnett?

I actually like that Je Ne Sais Pas cover. She's had far worse.

I'd probably say the Enjoy Yourself album cover is my least favourite cover from 80s era Kylie.

This one’s bad. You can see why she had a word

Basically PWL didn’t like paying anyone else to do anything which is why they’re still bitter about getting anyone to remix anything or create decent sleeves

The Wouldn't Change A Thing cover is an ABOMINATION.
Yes that is true. And the real shame is that I think she looks as good as she ever did until that point in the video.

I love this song very much but the cover screams HAIRY ARMPITS and some sort of STENCH

The only embarrassment I EVER had with buying PWL records was the COVERS

CHEAP CUNTS

OH MY GOD at this horror. PWL obviously still knew what they were doing :eyes:

Email from Kylie and Terry: FUCK OFF ABSOLUTELY NOT

I caught up with the second episode today, the detail they've got on all this is incredible. David Howells definitely came across as quite the sourpuss.

Despite this I do hope they manage to keep them all on board with the podcast for the full story of the fall of SAW (haven't they even threatened to do Love This as well?). Mike (I think) made some sharp comment about the narrative on the podcast about the increasing influence of dance music not being right.

Just finished the second BTDYK episode. It really is a knicker wettingly great podcast, isn't it? Even all those rising inflections from some of the guests couldn't dull its shine.

Those are the first two episodes I've listened to. I already listen to quite a few other podcasts and audio books so I'm not inclined to go back and to listen to them all, but are there any other episodes which are particularly insightful?

Actually, I'll start with one or two of the ones in your first few posts, @Eddie . But please highlight any others which are worthy.

I'm not a huge SAW fan (Kylie - and Jason, to a much lesser extent - was pretty much the extent of my interest in them) but I've listened to most of the episodes and they are all really enjoyable - and they help to illustrate the song factory that PWL became known for being.

If you just want Kylie though, there are some dedicated episodes as well as bits interspersed in others. I'm probably not the best person to ask. @Sheena or @FetchFugly perhaps?

Listening to the episodes start to finish really does give the wider story of the rise of SAW, the whole thing is such a worthwhile listen.

If you are looking for highlights I would say maybe just start with the songs that are your favourites. All the episodes have been made with a lot of love (though they always feel very honest with their opinions of all the tracks too) and the minor hits and flops are often just as interesting as the big hitters.

It is quite hard to pick out individual episodes. The Kylie episodes highlighted by @Eddie are obviously wonderful. The episodes for first two Mel and Kim singles are a great listen, as is This Time I Know It's For Real. I enjoyed Princess greatly too.

Oh and yes the video director had a very bad case of the rising inflections :D

@lolly I had this discussion only last night with two friends. You HAVE to start at the start. There’s so much joy even within the lesser known/ interesting songs and also tidbits appear as they get people to appear. So, for example, Jason had nothing to do with the podcast until a few episodes ago, so they did a retrospective.

Hazell dominates the early episodes and is an absolute joy. (Mostly for the multiple times she expresses “well, I was sitting at number six with Searchin’, and…”)

I also found some nuggets song wise I’d never really heard. Considering it’s retrospective, very little ages. I think I only started listening when they were already doing 1988 episodes and I caught up so quick. It’s an excellent podcast and I reckon if you listen from the start, you’ll soon be contemplating a subscription and all the bonus material, believe me!

The only thing that winds me up is when the presenters obviously read from a script. Matt is absolutely AWFUL at making it sound natural :D

I was saying last night too- who is missing in terms of acts they’ve not got on? I could only think of Kylie, Bananarama, Rick (really their biggest three names, so understandable) and then (more surprising) Sonia. Oh and Reynolds Girls and Big Fun, but considering how they slag them off, that’s not a shock.

:D They are just so likeable though - who'd have thought that a pair of Aussies would end up producing the definitive podcast on a quintessentially British songwriting and production outfit.

I SO want them to continue the Kylie journey beyond PWL - I might put in a request! No doubt they would sort out some great insider interviews.

It is quite odd how Sonia could not be tempted to appear. From what they've said it sounds like they really tried too.

I'm not shocked Bananarama have not made themselves available, it isn't the kind of thing I can imagine them being bothered to do. I would have been less surprised if Jacquie O or even Siobhan had featured.

They made quite the plea for Kylie on the most recent episode, I wonder if they see Terry as an in with her. I wouldn't think a full interview is so likely but a little message or something would be a nice acknowledgement.

I get the impression Sonia has a slightly strange relationship with her SAW days. She could definitely do more than she does. I remember when she was briefly coaxed into recording some new tracks a few years ago, the team she was working with were keen to do more but apparently she abruptly cut contact with them.

The whole Eurovision thing obviously gave her huge exposure, but maybe other than picking up the occasional payday with nostalgia circuit gigs, she's happier out of the industry and isn't particularly eager to look back on it?

I think she does the 80s festival circuit at least, doesn't she?

I don’t think Sonia is “out of the industry” at all, is she? She always rides the Eurovision circuit, has done a bit of reality tv and, yes, the 80s nostalgia circuit. I just don’t think she gets a huge amount of work.

Her SAW days didn’t perhaps end particularly well, but she’d certainly made up enough to do that Hit Factory live gig. I am really surprised they’ve not landed her for this.

As for Kylie, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if she agreed to a full length interview eventually. I think it was going to take the likes of Jason on board before it hit her radar, but the fact it’s Aussie made and the likes of Terry and Steve Anderson are now on board is going to help lots. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her appear at some point.

The Nanas I’m not remotely surprised about either, but I think it’s a shame. They’ve always (quite rightly) battled against the “SAW act” tag and can probably claim it more than most as they were a hugely well established act pre-SAW and post. I think they might see this as slightly detrimental to their brand.

I’d never thought of it that way, but yes, carrying on with Kylie would be an amazing podcast.

Just listened to the first three episodes while doing a bit of gardening. I'm in for the long haul.
