Kim Wilde: Closer (New album and tour)

I think I like the first verse and chorus of Lighthouse best. I feel it teases going into an electronic direction and then when it kicks in it isn't quite what I hoped for. I'd love a remix of this one.

I know she said one song was originally from the Aliens sessions, I am assuming it is Rocket To The Moon. I know it has probably been reworked but not sure how it got passed over last time.

I like Stones And Bones but there are a few moments which could have done with another vocal take.

I'm coming on board with Love Is Love now. I agree it is the one track some of the urgency of her classic late eighties pop stormers. I suspect they may have an extended version up their collective sleeves and I am here for it.
I think the song from the Aliens era (though I could be missing one) is Lighthouse. On the podcast posted they say this was written first but morphed into Solstice for that album and they reworked the original idea for this one.

When I asked her, she replied, “what? You’re a madman” and I explained how a friend and I randomly quote The Second Time lyrics to each other for no reason on texts (entirely true) and she said “oh my god, I love that” and laughed.

He then asked for “Just go for it” and she said “oh and YOU’RE the friend then!”. Sadly, it wasn’t til after I realised (and I don’t think he did when he was proudly showing his vinyl off) that they’d both forgotten in the melee to add his actual name so it’s entirely unpersonalised :D

That’s great @Sheena she seems lovely. I met Wendy James and got a pic at the end of last year who was delightful, always cool when they turn out alright.

In other news was listening to an interview on Radio 5 while working yesterday and Kim exclusively revealed she was more proud of her Chelsea Flower Show gold medal than her Brit Award for Best British Female. There was quite a bit of flowers and aliens chat. I wanted to be able to remind her to say Closer #outnow, touring near you #soon.

I’ll bite…and then probably never play it again :disco:

Saw her in Manchester last night. What a woman! Really in fabulous voice and very delightful onstage.

The setlist was very Close/Closer heavy, as billed, but she did end with a run through most of the other hits, including this. No Love Is Holy though :(

I can't be arsed to listen to Closer, but I assume I'll still enjoy myself tonight?

Oh 100%! When I say Closer heavy, maybe 4-5 songs and they’re mostly uptempo and in line with her general power-pop style.

It was such a fun gig! I’d urge anyone who hasn’t seen her to make the effort.

Has she never done Glastonbury? I can totally see her going down a treat in the kind of early afternoon slot Rick Astley did last year.

It was great, she was fab as per, though I confess it’s a slight comedown after the Greatest Hits tour, which gave us some real rarely heard gems.

It also wasn’t the whole of the Close album, which was a shame, especially as she did most, except Love In The Natural Way, which I’ve heard her do quite a few times over the years, so that was surprising.

I am also SO tired of Kids In America for the closing number, when there are at least three or four obvious options she could replace it with if she wanted to.

But MINOR GRIPES.

I got some good photos, but they aren't particularly flattering. The ones where she looks good are crap photos.

And yeah, a lot of mine aren’t too flattering but a 64 year old with no work done in full vocal flight isn’t exactly the best angle for a shot, often!

As I've only ever seen her as part of a line up before, the Kids Of America encore didn't feel tired to me. But as I believe I mentioned last night, putting You Came and Never Trust A Stranger as tracks two and three of a setlist that isn't even a greatest hits did feel like spunking them away a little - and then the pacing did feel a little off later.

But she was fantastic, regardless.

As I said at the time, I presumed she was running through the whole Close album in order with the first two so was surprised to hear Stranger next. She often opens with that or puts it near the front- it’s rarely at the tail end of the gig, when she could easily close with it.

From your perspective as someone who has seen her a lot, I understand it - from the reaction they got last night, it's clear that she's got about 4 or 5 other songs she could easily choose to close a show with and still be guaranteed a great reaction.

Definitely:
You Came
You Keep Me Hangin’ On
Never Trust A Stranger

Arguably:
Chequered Love
Four Letter Word (if they did an encore acoustic thing)

I reckon she’d get away with If I Can’t Have You as well.

Cambodia also gets a great reaction, but it’s never a show closer.

I was pleasantly surprised at the reaction Water On Glass got. Although that could be me underestimating it and/or the fact that we were right at the front surrounded by loons. It may not have felt so big up in the balconies.

Thrilled with how Stone absolutely went off as well.

She does Stone a lot- definitely her most played album track, and at the first Shepherd’s Bush comeback gig post- gardening when she (NAME DROP AGAIN) spoke to me afterwards backstage, she singled that out as one she knew the fans wanted to hear and hoped it was ok.

Water on Glass and View From A Bridge are staples too, both of which usually go down really well. She’s surprisingly fond of including The Second Time at most tours too, though it’s been excluded here. I can’t think of any others that are so regular in the set list.

I’m glad the shows are being well received (as per expectations). I was checking the ‘Closer’ thread but here it is.

After listening to Lee’s podcast with Kim, Ricky and Scarlett I was expecting this sort of setlist. The intention was originally a Close/Closer affair but with the back catalogue she has and the casual fan element involved too they realised it would be too difficult to focus on just the two albums. Maybe she could consider a standalone show for Close/Closer or an anti tour one nighter type of show for the more hardcore.

Yes, I think our VoR mucked it up. These posts probably should be in the Closer thread.

She did throw away a few Close tunes in a medley too, which was a shame, I thought, but understandable given what you've said above.

TONIGHT for me! Just looking at the setlist and thinking I may as well leave after Stone though :bad: (NOT REALLY)

Was it ever considered for single release at the time, do you know?

Although there aren't many 80s pop albums which already had as many options in that regard as Close did.

I doubt it as it was already the b-side of You Came. It was the only other option left on the album, though, really. I would have thought if "Love In The Natural Way" had hit as big as the preceding three, it would have been, but that was never a point.
