Melodifestivalen 2023: Deltävling One - Gothenburg

01 - LouLou Lamotte - What a LIFE-AFFIRMING BOP! Gonna be so angry when this goes top five because Shirley Clamp didn't have the patience to wait for an actually good song she could get 12 points from all the over 50s and telephone voters from for :oi: The Händerna mot himlen comparisons are making me wonder if this is what September has really been doing for the last five years? Witness protection can do amazing things these days (just ask @Suomi)

02 - Elov & Beny - This is literally EVERYTHING I have been hectoring Linda Bengtzing to send for years if she wants to make it past the heats again! Cannot wait to dance in the aisles at the Swedish church to this, order a hot dog especially, and then commit incest later on that evening in tribute :disco:

03 - Jon-Henrik Fjällgren feat. Arc North & Adam Woods - Look obviously it's good and I'd still give it all up for noted EMOTIVE HUNK Jon-Henrik any day of the week, but there's a real 'HnH group looking for 4th' quality to that artist picture and the 2016 banger is NOT HELPING my trigger in that regard

04 - Tone Sekelius - Delighted this wasn't the direct SloMo ripoff I was fearing from the reviews, but I don't know, maybe it could've done with a little more of the yeah yeah fire that I was expecting from that rather than a replacement-level Omar Rudberg entry. Giggling incessantly that it sounds like she's exhorting the audience "my body feels like a van - go!", especially after she just got new tits installed

05 - that guy - Love that he's cut his hair so you don't think it's him, before proceeding to enter the exact same [what's this guy's name again???] song he enters every single time anyway. I'd say you win this round bitch, but guess who has to take the long train to andra chansen in three weeks

06 - Ewa & Eva - In days of yore, young naïf debutantes would oft debut with serious moments they made it to the final with, before immediately scurrying away and then a year or two later coming back bedecked in a leather bodice doing a slutpop track they died on their arse in the heats with. Anyway that kind of doesn't fit this track as it's almost the exact opposite in every way of what's happening here with this fun4flappers artistic growth moment, but I mention it anyway because they're gonna finish 6th and also does anyone else think one of them might have been Ellen Benediktson all along (hope they still turn up in sexy leather bodices too btw)

07 - Rejhan - just couldn't stop looking at his nose

Tone has not made the most of that returning breakout artist chip at ALL on further reflection. I feel like she's possibly gone in a little too preoccupied by the need to show off that she can dance. Set the alarm for our first 5th place disaster of the year

Yeah, it’s just too jarring of a shift in style for it to seem authentic. It’s like Lena being all bubbly and charming with Satellite and coming back a year later as a total slag and crowing about being done up the trundle by strangers.

I stand by this.

Look I can believe that both of them were a whore all along ("teehee - I'm scared, I've never done this before!" is one of history's great tried and tested killer lines after all), but I think this contrast is a useful illustration actually - if you're going to come back as a whore the track needs to BANG. Taken Up The Wrong'Un By A Stranger did, but Rhythm of my Show is more... okay I can believe you've done this before, but I'm just not sure if you've done it well

God maybe I wasted that Ellen Benediktson comparison on Ewa & Eva. We're totally seeing Tone back with an ill-fitting ballad duet with Patrik Jean in three years time aren't we

I suspect:

1 - Jon-Henrik has a lot more to give in performance and in the full track
2 - that it probably would've given Frans a run for his money had it been in the line-up in 2016
3 - that it absolutely isn't winning Eurovision, or Melfest for that matter

LouLou and Jon Henrik are the ones based on first listen. Didn't expect the skånska to be so prominent in LouLou's entry but it's giving BOP.

LouLou is the nicest surprise of the lot, I think. It actually sounds like a plausible qualifier, whereas I just assumed she was popping in to come 6th and assert Ashley as the Gary Barlow of the Mamas once and for all.

Loulou's song is great, this is a Mitt Liv done the right way. If Loulou's production team has managed to come up with anything more interesting than a guitar, a beautiful dress and white lights she's certain to advance come Saturday.

It's very worrying that not even Tone's target demographic is feeling the Rhythm of my show, it's just too much radio and too little show.

Does this clash with the Norwegian final, which is a far more enthralling prospect?

Odds
Jon Henrik Fjällgren 1,05 1,05
Tone Sekelius 2,00 1,90

Elov & Beny 4,50 3,50
Loulou Lamotte 4,75 4,50
Victor Crone 5,50 4,00

Rejhan 15,00 14,00
Eva Rydberg & Ewa Roos 35,00 31,00

95% for JHF isn't exactly that crazy - he has the record to back it at least. The chances of two of the others nudging him out feel pretty low.

Anyway, nothing to write home about in this semi by the sounds of things, but I appreciate things will change not only with the full songs but also the performances. Definitely not a winner here.

Is anyone running a predictions competition this year?

DTF: Jon-Henrik Fjällgren ft. young vers & young btm, Elov & Beny
AC: Victor Crone, Loulou Lamotte
5th: Tone Sekelius
6th: Ewa & Eva
7th: Rejhan

LIVE snippet ranking:

1. LouLou - REALLY stands out among the pack. Yes, she's styled as Swamp Thing but her voice and what we hear of the song are both EXCEPTIONAL.
2. Jon Henrik and the Aryan League - Love me a good gantry. This is all of the food groups and I'm hugely in favour of it.
3. Eva & Ewa - They're putting on a show, God love 'em.
4. Elov & Beny - Don't try to replicate De Vet Du if your song isn't as good as Road Trip.
5. Tone - Better than I was expecting but it feels a bit off for her. It's too far removed from what people liked about her last year.
6. Victor Crone - What fuckery is this outfit? Was the poor bastard dressed in the dark by someone who bears a grudge? And why have they let him just wibble about on stage alone again like last time?
7. Blousy lesbian - Shit.
