Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

My interpretation is that Janice was talking about being first female TOTP presenter, and mentioned being sacked by Radio 1.

Liz thought Janice was saying she was the first female Radio 1 presenter, and pointed out that Annie was the first, and it's triggered a lot of unhappy memories, including the repeated gropings by DLT.

Just watching some of these - King Kurt getting away with some all-out blacking up there. Ouch.

Oh God...DLT sleazing up Olivia Newton John is excruciating...

Poor Aztec Camera - both performances of "Oblivious" yewtree'd.

Are we really about to start 1984? 1983 has gone so quickly, it was pleasurable but I do look forward to seeing FGTH ignored for weeks on end.

I'm looking forward to getting started on 1984, The Smiths turned up quite a few times for one thing and I'm pretty sure The Cure sat on the floor looking miserable at one point. And FGTH the week "Two Tribes" went straight in at Number One and they had a total "fuck you all" look about them after the whole "Relax" ban bullshit.

The end of the years really are the weaker links musically. So much trash. Bring on the new year.

A fair bit of stagnation in these end of year 1983 ones but that's to be expected. I have been loving Victims all over again though.

TOTP 1984 documentary is now on iPlayer. Big section on gay music/ Hi-NRG featuring Hazell Dean!

The Slade revival is fucking bizarre.

Also Christmas seemed to last longer back in the day.

Yeah, people bought Xmas records with money or record tokens they got at Xmas rather than it being all over by about 5.37pm on Christmas Day. And Slade were national treasures. This late chart flurry was their equivalent of the reunion tours bands do nowadays.

Very obvious sharp edit on that programme there. I wonder if it was the deleltion of a mention of the person who presented the very first TOTP...

Well I hope that's a vision of things to come. Edit not delete!

I see Father Jack's Christmas Countdown was edited out of the broadcast version.

It wasn't, I watched it...unless it was on the following episode as well and they ditched it from that...

That Father Jack song was a load of shite.

Tell Her About It really is Billy Joel's best song. Love the fact FGTH opened the first show of 1984 at #35 and now looking back you'd think it was going to be a review of the year.

After a bit of Youtubing Evelyn Thomas' High-Energy was on a Mike Smith week :(

Although it's feasible that she'll be on more than once.

Oh hurrah it appears she was on again John Peel and Kid Jensen

Crisis averted.

God they do keep banging on about this special BRITISH video award. POSTCARDS ONLY.

(Feels Like) Heaven remains a treat though.

Break My Stride, Feels Like Heaven and Radio Gaga :disco:

Who DID win the video award?

A couple of missing Top Of The Pops....

26 January 1984

The Alarm, Cyndi Lauper, Echo & The Bunneymen, The Smiths, Eurythmics, a number 1 that can't be shown. And, oh, yes, an introduction to a new talent called Madonna. She'll never make it...

9 February 1984 (from the week after the edition shown tonight, 29/06/17)

Morrissey turns up once again with the rest of his gang, Nik Kershaw, Marillion, Madness, two wonderful records, one by Elbow Bones & The Racketeeers (with a sadly long forgotten record) and Swans Way (with a quite brilliant song). And again, a number 1 that can't be shown.

Seeing The Smiths on TOTP doing What Difference Does It Make was one of the turning points of my life, no joke. What an utter bastard that both episodes had to be ditched. Still, I can watch them again here, thanks Robbie.

Just how many more hits did Musical Youth have...

Matthew Wilder's frizzy perm, crop top and leather trousers were quite the combination.

'Sixteen' was their last hit so that's it for Musical Youth. They released two further singles and when they flopped the band were dropped by their label. The group split in 1985 but reformed in 2001 and are about to relaese a new album.

In 2009 they released a cover of 'Mary's Boy Child - Oh My Lord'. I can't decide if its a decent reggae version of Boney M's version of 'Mary's Boy Child' or if it's abysmal...

The most ECCLECTIC Christmas album EVER... :D
More like the most abysmal Christmas album ever!

Edit: i'm trying to post an amazon link here but the board keeps trying to post it as a video link. The album can be found by clicking on the amazon link at the following search:

Leif Garrett's take on 'Merry Xmas Everybody' sounds like it was recorded with no budget! He's certainly no Noddy Holder in the vocal stakes...

Which episode was the fiercely heterosexual and deeply Italian Matthew Wilder on? I seem to have missed said performance (although watched it multiple times on Youtube).

Yes, only ever record the later show. It's bad enough missing all the YewSmithed episodes, never mind them butchering some airings of the episodes they do show.
