Old TOTP (BBC4)

Peter Powell's last show. What a fucking shame.

An absolute shitter here from Bros. Ghastly, weedy, flimsy.

"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" is actually a banger. It doesn't sound 80's but it does freak me out a bit that the song is over 30 years old. In Scotland, it never really went away...

Sweet Child O' Mine down to 30? I remember that being much bigger...did they reissue it later?

IIRC, there was some weird Musicians Union rule that meant the (then) current version of The Hollies couldn't mime to the 60's version's recording. Hence this rotten version being trotted out whenever they were on the actual show.

I remember not thinking much of Domino Dancing at the time. No idea why but probably because it didn't sound like The Fall. My teenage years were tough.

Bill Withers looking thoroughly befuddled. As well he might...maybe it was his first time hearing that awful remix...or maybe he was wondering why he had two female backing "singers" where there are no female vocals on the record.

Absolute shitter from Rick Astley and he looks like he knows it.

Gary Davies calling U2 the greatest band in the world just gives his cunt status even more weight.

Confession, I once played bass on a cover of this for a school friend. It's only three notes.

I'd forgotten how funny the overt literalism of Erasure's "A Little Respect" video actually is, not least because of their completely straight faces throughout.

These episodes are pretty grim, in the main and quite heavy on videos.

Quite grim, this Bobby McFerrin video when he acts the part of someone who is about to top himself and then Robin Williams dances into shot :(

And then they appear in the studio with RESPECT in 6 foot letters behind them. Sarky bastards. :D

This is a CHOON as well, still sounds great.

I have very fond memories of Wee Rule as it was part of the soundtrack of my A level geography field trip to Slapton Ley field centre in Devon :disco:

I have to say as much as I love quite a lot from 1988, I remember most the bangers. The takeaways have been few and far between. I expect 1991 to 1993 will be more interesting to me as I lost interest in music for a while.

I remember buying so much music around this time. I had a part time job in a local video shop all through sixth form, and my mother let me have the child benefit. I remember I used to feel so flush with cash at that time.

I'd say a four or five year period at the end of the 80s/start of the 90s has probably the most dense concentration of my favourite albums ever. Madonna, Kylie, Voice of the Beehive, Shakepears Sister, Bangles, Sinead O'Connor.

That line in Wee Rule about the guy "swearing in French" actually happened to my sister - she was in Aya Napa (sp?) when she was 20 and some French bloke was yapping about how all British women were slags and our kid gave him an earful in his own language. Class.

Right, where was I?

I can't quite find this Beatmasters/PP Arnold tune in my head...it;s not bad. The Beatmasters were basically the in-house engineers at Mute Records who were given their own imprint and allowed to get on with it.

This T'Pau record isn't in my memory banks either. Hardly surprising given that it appears to be completely devoid of character.

I remember loving it at the time. Fuck knows how they managed to dupe me beyond the big two hits. Pleased that most I liked from the arse end of the 80s has held up much better.

Hang on, this D-Mob video is a complete rip from the Residents!!!

Add in the classic eyeball head image the Rez landed upon in '78/79 and I can't accept this is co-incidence!

The Christians actually made a decent fist of "Harvest For The World". Horrid video - patronising animation can funk off..

Bloody hell, Enya jumped from 29 to 5? I mean, I totally remember it being no. 1 and being absolutely everywhere but I didn't recall how quickly it had hit.

How did it happen? They do say they've been playing it a lot on Radio 1 which boggles the mind knowing what that station's become.

Ah, Je Ne Sais Pas Pourqoui. I''ve said it before but this was the first Kylie record I was into. Still sounds great, horrible 80's drum machine aside.

Don't remember. Maybe they thought it was the antidote to all that naughty acid house or something.

EDIT - of course, they were playing Bobby McFerrin to death too...strange times.

Anthea Fucking Turner introducing Milli Fucking Vanilli? This has taken a GRIM turn.

Who in the name of Caroline Quentin's must minge was that female presenter the other night? Susie someone? NO IDEA

Good GOD

There's a reason I haven't heard CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS since 1988 and that's because it's BLOODY AWFUL. If that was LIVE it would have been a POOR VOCAL PERFORMANCE and it WASN'T EVEN!
