Is this national final season seeming more chaotic than usual or do I just have a short memory?

I'm getting a bit of a sense at the rough quarter of the way mark that it feels there's been a bit of an informal boycott/chilling effect on the more avant garde stuff which was starting to make up a fairly respectable chunk of representation in the round at national selections. It seems like we're on track for a bit more of a Steps at Eurovision/party novelty songs vibe this year.
