UK Charts/ Midweeks 2019

What’s with Bad Guy climbing again?
I thought I'd read there's a new remix which has reset the streaming ratio.

So manipulating the chart rules, intentionally or otherwise.

I could have gone off Eilish for that if her album wasn't the absolute tits.

So one of the Ed Sheeran songs changed from yesterday's midweeks to today's. As if we can take the charts seriously anymore.

@Jark do we have any midweeks for this week yet? I would like to see how Mabel is doing.

I think Mabel has been massively overshipped. Her midweek sales are not good, despite the position.

Those album sales are atrocious, but I am confident she will hang around.

Joel Corry from Geordie Shore getting a proper Hit is quite surreal.

It's a garage classic though, always thought it was odd that it didn't blow up like some of the others

2 things.

1) - who the fuck are "Volbeat"?
2) - "Social House" - what's next? Calvin Harris feat Economic Forecast?

There's obscure Scottish folk music at six. This is excellent but really brings home quite how appalling sales are.

Music Week have published this today.

The same article also states that for the first time since the 'vinyl revival', year on year sales were down 1.1% in Q2.

So 5 of the top 7 are "catalogue" albums, only one of which was actively reissued/repromoted.

And one of the others is Foals. :gross:

That could just be Record Store Day being poor this year tho', given how large it bulks in that quarter.

Like I read elsewhere, you have to hand it to the industry. They spent the 90s persuading us to buy albums we already owned on vinyl on CD at inflated prices, and now they are selling us them back on vinyl.

Considering growth was flattening out already, I think it would be foolish to view it as anything as a part of a continuing trend.

That makes sense, because they're mostly collector's items, aren't they?

Well no, 4 of the 5 are standard pressings - only Joy Division was reissued as a collector's item with coloured vinyl and an inverted sleeve.

Considering growth was flattening out already, I think it would be foolish to view it as anything as a part of a continuing trend.

This was thought mainly down to overpricing, wasn't it? There are some signs of learning from this and some signs that the cash cow is still being milked dry - the Joy Division LP was well priced but those Bowie demos were exorbitant - £80 for a single LP in a box, not on yr nelly.

Another interesting fact (perhaps): in 2015 the indie labels had 51.1% of the market. In the first half of this year they are down to 35.3%. Universal alone has a 34.3% share.

I wonder how they measure that tho'...i.e. if I buy from an indie via Bandcamp, does that register at all? Are indies just getting better at direct selling, something the need to do more and more just to survive.

(also, 2015 did have some big indie releases, Adele's 25 for one)

I imagine supermarket sales are a big part, aren't they? I mean I haven't looked in detail at what they are offering, but I assume indie labels find it harder to get into the supermarkets.

Either way, at the moment at least they are getting a smaller slice but of a bigger pie. I just don't think the pie will keep growing.

So Emma Bunton might be top 20 in the end of year chart :D

That's a weird selection but Billie Eilish killing it on all formats - except CD, I wonder?

I agree with this. There still isn't any significantly discounts on vinyl and the entry point of £20 minimum is a bit ridiculous. That will fall over time and I fully expect things to pick up again to be honest...

So Emma Bunton might be top 20 in the end of year chart :D

NO chance! There's bound to be bigger cassette-based albums to come and she won't sell a single copy more.
