UK Charts/ Midweeks 2019

So Mariah is at #8 this week, when it was #6 last week. In the US she was also higher last year (#14) than this one (#18). Is she losing steam? I hope not, otherwise fuck Xmas!

I'm hoping not. The charts are essentially an equation now anyway, and she's only 3k below the #6, and less than 4k under #5.

#13 - Wham - Last Christmas
#22 - The Pogues ft Kirsty Maccoll - Fairytale Of New York
#23 - Band Aid - Do They Know It’s Christmas
#26 - Shakin Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone
#32 - Michael Bublé - It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas
#33 - Ariana Grande - Santa Tell Me
#39 - Elton John - Step Into Christmas

In other chart news, Dance Monkey has its second successive week of reduced sales, so that means that if that doesn't reverse, the week after next it will see it hit the higher streaming ratio.

Speaking of which, do we know what rate they are applying to Mariah yet?

I think Mariah is still on the higher ratio. Why?!

Interestingly, Mariah's streaming figures are down on last year though. 403k yesterday compared to 429k on the same day last year.

At the end of the day it depends how well the rest of the contenders do, right? There's hope.

What do we think of Dance Monkey? I am personally sick to death of it as it has been getting played around my house for MONTHS (not by me), but I did enjoy it for the first few weeks. VERY catchy.

I don't think I've heard it more than twice. I'm not even certain I'd recognise it again.

Brenda Lee really has become a favourite the last few years. I've just read she was 14 when she recorded it. Also she's still alive.

I didn't realise quite how young she was when she was having hits. She seems to be the highest placed of the old oldies on the Christmas playlists. Jingle Bell Rock is another that has done very well out of the streaming era when I don't think it was thought of quite so much before, in the UK anyway.

Hopefully Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) can do better again this year, though I think it had the Asda advert last year so maybe not.

Seems a good enough place to post the festive totp line ups.

Top of the Pops - Christmas Day line-up:
Lewis Capaldi, AJ Tracey, Jorja Smith, Freya Ridings, Tom Walker, Labrinth, Jax Jones, Ella Henderson, Dermot Kennedy, Jack Savoretti, Sigala, Becky Hill, The Script, Mabel and James Blunt.

Top of the Pops - December 30 line-up:
Mabel, Lewis Capaldi, Dermot Kennedy, Blossoms, Sigma, Jack Savoretti, DJ Regard and Jay Sean, Freya Ridings, Celeste, Joel Corry and Hayley May, Tom Walker, Lily Moore and Dan Caplen.

Speaking of this I swear it’s on an advert this year??

That looks fucking awful. Is that really deemed a proper representation of 2019 in music? Ghastly.

I kind of thought that.

But then I realised in chart terms I've no idea of what good representation would be.

The TOTP line ups are very tellingly WHOEVER was free on the filming dates :D

The likes of Blossoms, Labrinth and Jack Savoretti haven’t had a hit all year as far as I’m aware. It’s only really Lewis Capaldi, Mabel and AJ Tracey with the proper big hits from the year tbh. Maybe Tom Walker and Dermot Kennedy too but BORING!

Labyrinth never appeared in the charts this year. The Blossoms hit #100 this week and Jack hit the dizzy heights of #70.

It's no wonder they've been shunted out of the pre-Queen slot on the 25th with a line-up as piss weak as that. How fitting for a year in which the UK basically wet itself in front of the world.

Labrinth released an album a fortnight ago which hasn't charted, despite seven singles having already being released from it according to wikipedia. And Blossoms have an album out in January. Presumably they came as part of a 'you can only have raw dough faced Capaldi if you shove these on as well' type deal.

I went to two of the four recording sessions yesterday. None of the “names” on that list were there, not that there were many to begin with.

One thing I did notice was that I knew a lot of the songs, I just didn’t have a clue who the artists were on paper (Dermot Kennedy, Joel Corry and Regard off the top of my head). So from that perspective it was kind of nice as we’re kind of missing the ability to put a face to the name that we used to get from TOTP.

That being said, it’s a piss poor line-up for the “best of 2019” no matter how you dress it up.

Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Rita Ora, Ava Max and a couple of solo One Direction people were all in London over the weekend performing at some Jingle Ball thing so it’s a shame the show no longer has the pull to persuade them to hop across town to record a couple of songs.

Rita did it last year I think. I guess she hasn't had singles on the same level in 2019 but in that company she wouldn't be out of place. The reduced number of local popstars leaves these shows looking increasingly light on hits. I wonder if they would be better to cut it back to the one hour, though the second is another hour in the schedule filled I suppose.

Midweek top 5

1 Tones and I - Dance Monkey (25,927)
2 Ellie Goulding - River (16,756)
3 Stormzy feat. Ed Sheeran & Burna Boy - Own It (16,028)
4 Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now (15,342)
5 Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (14,247)

That Ellie cover is an amazon exclusive on sales and streaming, and surely must be a Christmas #1 contender

I heard it the other day, and immediately remembered how great she is at ballads. It really is rather beautiful.

How strange. I didn't think that Amazon downloads and streaming alone would have that much impact.

Particularly considering she hasn't had a top ten hit for a couple of years, has she?

1 Tones and I - Dance Monkey (34.6k)
2 Stormzy feat. Ed Sheeran & Burna Boy - Own It (21.6k)
3 Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now (20.4k)
4 Ellie Goulding - River (20.3k)
5 Lewis Capaldi - Before You Go (19.3k)

6-10
6 Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You
7 Wham! - Last Christmas

Is the Ellie Goulding song a Joni Mitchell cover? If so, I don't quite see why that was necessary.
