Westworld (HBO)

fucking finally!
though looking at the recap i don't remember anything and maybe i should rewatch the first season before indulging.

That was a good premier, there’s so much I’ve forgotten but they give enough explanations so I wasn’t too lost.

Thandie remains the MVP but I also really enjoyed the Bernard stuff. Evan Rachel Wood is good but I care less for Dolores and Teddy than the others.

yes, it was a very forgiving episode all things considered. I hope the Dolores/Teddy duet won’t go into smarmy territory

i watched it in three installments (it's proper movie length) and i was pretty lost a lot of the time (bernard and man in black storylines mainly).

agreed about thandie, she's doing a pretty good job and she's the one i'm most invested in though i'm curious to see what happens to dolores. especially now she's lost the blue dress and gone all romancing the stone.

i can't help wondering if ed harris has ever used spf. i know his pushing 70 but that face is terrifying.

I think there's one close up where they exaggerated his wrinkles with blood that he looked closer to a skull than a human.

Also Lee Sizemore has a nice penis that I didn't mind looking at.

RIP from moopy's intolerance to moderate political views :(

Incidentally Mr L was watching this when I got home from work yesterday evening. What a fucking load of old shit.

And I wasn't particularly impressed by the penis, either.

I thought it was a nice half erect penis (uncut but nothing is perfect).

Second episode was just boring, maybe I’m not in the mood but I was eventually annoyed by everyone talking in riddles and spouting basic philosophy at me.

No Maive or Bernard and I’m stuck with Dolores for a full episode is not my idea of fun.

Oh no no no, I found last week underwhelming but this week loads of new threads appeared. At least we didn't have the English twerp, and Maeve stole the one scene she did get.

I had to go back and rewatch the season finale. It made things a lot clearer.

So it’s turning out that they were collecting data from all the visitors. But could someone explain how this is related to Ed Harris’ looking for the centre of the maze in last season? Somehow I find these two things contradicting.

I don't think I understand what you mean. from what I gather the two have nothing to do with each other

In season one he was searching for something specific inside the park and he thought Dolores would lead him to it. Now he says the hosts were and the park were only a way of getting to see the visitors for who they really are.

ah yes, but not in the literal genetic sense. the DNA’s what she was trying to smuggle out along with the code of the hosts for some company/the board so they could either blackmail Ford or sell it as data. the Man in Black does not know about this DNA theft, he’s still on some metaphysical philosophical level. at least that’s my thought on it

the thing with the centre of the maze is that it also now shows the host themselves who they “really” are, that’s what Arnold put in there and why they’re now revolting

Yeah, I get the last part, it’s the first I didn’t know.

But the man in black aka William is the one who started the DNA harvesting thing.

really? I thought he was unaware of that and that it were other members of the board who'd gone rogue...

either way this Arnold has laid out a trap or an obstacle for Delos in order to sabotage whatever their hidden agenda is with the DNA harvesting and that's what the Man in Black in looking for, no?

As far as I understand, he's working for his own goal and he doesn't really care about Delos.

But then again I guess I don't understand what the fuck is going on with the show.

he doesn’t care, for sure, but incidentally whatever knowledge it is that is giving the hosts life is both what he is looking for (he’s trying to find his true self himself) and what is obstructing Delos’s aim to take advantage of the technology (there’s a scene in season one where Hale butts in on his mission and he tells her to fuck off)

the bigger question is still WHO THE FUCK’S ARNOLD?

Arnold was Ford's partner who killed himself and was replaced by Bernard (who looks like him and maybe has his DNA). We meet him in the flashbacks with Dolores in the lab as well as in China where he's building the house.

This is feeling a bit like hard work at the moment with the different timelines. The fabulosity of Maeve is keeping me hanging in there (not nearly enough of her last week) but this season isn't clicking yet.

OK the third episode was a big improvement I thought. Genuinely quite exciting and much less of a trial to follow.

i'm struggling with the season. it's all a bit meh so far and the convoluted story doesn't really help me to care about anyone.

i thought there were some unusually sloppy bits as well (when corporate girl escapes from the confederados, bernard altogether, the whole battle scene and especially the back door entry).

I just don’t care about Dolores. Also it doesn’t help that there’s no sense of geography to the show so I have no idea where everyone is and where they’re trying to go.

Colonial India was fun and Maeve is always a good watch as is Sizemore in his ridiculous outfit.

I love Dolores but I really don’t care for all those battle scenes.

I think they're all lost too now that the barriers are down

I hope they don’t stay in Japan for too long. I prefer Colonial India.

I was talking more about a sense of place for the viewer, like I don't know where those different parts of the park are in relation to each other. So when Dolores says she has to go back to Sweetwater or when Maeve finds Artemis I have no concept of where they are or how far they will go.
