Given all the MISERABLISM around this year, interested to know which of the past 10 contests people actually think was the worst.

Excluding 2020 because it’s not really a fair comparison.

For me it’s 2015. There are no terrible recent years IMO, but the voting that year was insanely boring. I think 90% of countries had the same top six. Other than Montenegro there really weren’t any decent deep cuts and the hosts were very bland.

2022 for me. Yes the thrill of the UK doing well was a highlight but it was a weak lineup (the second half of the final in particular was a slog), zero tension over the winner which I still don't think was a great song, and the stage itself gave up as it wasn't worth it.

I think I've done this wrong as not based on overall songs or show/host, BUT the wicked Israel's ghastly Netta winning over the majestic Fuego still leaves a VERY BITTER TASTE INDEED :evil:

I can never hate 2022 for the sheer THRILL of all those UK 12s coming in. Watching it in a Scottish pub in Turin was an incredible experience.

But yes objectively the Italians really fucked it.

I firmly believe that 2018 would be considered a classic year had Fuego managed to get past Netta.
I DO consider it a classic :disco:

Albania and Hungary from 2018 are in my top ten of all time. And Fuego basically set the tone for every song over the next couple of years; without Fuego I may never have She Got Me.

2015 was such a MEH year. Essentially what this year would’ve probably been had Måns won Melfest again. The dreadful production hardly helped things but at least we had Love Injected :disco:

I hear what you're saying but Spain was the clear MVP of 2015. Edurne moved the sun across the sky with her mind. All Temu Sinitta did was have a shit parting.

2015 in terms of the overall show - I don't think a recent edition of Eurovision has ever felt to stale.

2022 for production(who is going to forget that fucking SUN)

2024 for demoralisation, atmosphere and just wanting the whole thing to end.

2024 would have been a contender for the best contest ever if a few national finals gone the right way (Sinceramente, Damdiggida, Paskana, Pazza, Effortless etc.) and a certain country had been kicked out.

Netta winning in 2018 made me question my love for the contest. It was a terrible winner and I'm still annoyed about it to this day. I think what made it particularly hard go bear was that there were so many other extremely worthy winners that year.

Yep. 2015 had the worst songs across the board - although thankfully there were a few real gems in that top ten. I'm actually a bit worried this year looks like it might really be worse than it.

2024 was the only year where the overall experience genuinely ruined my mental health, but the songs were pretty damn good by and large.

Actually I'll revise and say 2014 was worse than 2015. 2015 had some properly towering highs. Outside of that top three there really wasn't a great deal to work with in 2014 (bar occasional gems like ROUND AND ROUND FROM SLOVENIA :disco:), and the depth felt quite lacking - which is probably my main critique of this year.

2014 for me is a great example of how a strong Eurovision year is often about so much more than the sum of its banger quotient.

Looking back, there's not *that* much I go back to regularly, but it had so many other qualities that mark it as a classic year in my eyes.

* Incredible top 3
* Genuinely thrilling voting
* Charming, funny hosts
* Everything Conchita
* The ultimate feel-good moment of Valentina finally qualifying for San Marino

That San Marino qualification is still an incredibly joyful moment to revisit.

The stage and camera work for 2014 was also a huge step up on anything we had had before.

Judging purely on the group of songs then I think 2015 and 2017 rank more or less equally at the bottom for me but as a viewing experience the second half of the 2015 final being packed with dirges sinks it lower. Although even that back half was marginally preferable to 2019's three thousand interval acts and 2024's constant existential dread.

The MASSIVE downside to 2014 was that fuckawful giant stage. It made so many of the performances look empty - I remember Armenia, Israel and Poland in particular looking swamped by it.

2015 really was a stale old piece of toast

A lot of us moaned about the voting overhaul in 2016 but it really injected a new lease of life into the contest.

This. The greenroom set up was terrible too as it meant half of the venue floor was empty. It looked awful on tv.

Most of the songs were piss-poor as well.

Had a look back at @VoR's pre-review of the worst year in the last ten :disco:

I know there's been a lot of moaning but I really don't think it's a terrible year at all. The actual baseline quality is really solid, it's just very much lacking in dizzying highs and crashing lows. No ridiculous novelty songs, not much in the way of glittering Eurodiva anthems with no relevance whatsoever to the modern charts. It's a very mature Eurovision, and I'd put it about on a par with the past two years. I'm confident that after the dust has settled most people will have significantly improved their opinions on it.
