RuPaul's Drag Race

TruTV has picked up the show in the UK

Beloved drag reality series RuPaul’s Drag Race has finally found a UK broadcast channel.

The World of Wonder production has been picked up by TruTv, and will sit alongside the likes of Container Wars, Fear Factor, and Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show, Conan.

The Turner owned broadcaster has picked up all seven seasons, and will start airing them from June, with the exclusive UK premiere of season four before rolling out further seasons and specials across its schedule.

TruTV are also airing behind the scenes extras with RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked alongside the main show.

WHO?

Is this like that fictional channel which aired Lauren Harries: Working 9 Til 5?

It's on Channel 565 on Sky and 68 on Freeview. The rights really could not have cost much at all!

I'm semi-baffled that Channel 5 didn't pick it up for 5USA or 5* or whatever. If it was that CHEAP, surely the Michelle Visage connection would be enough to chuck it on their schedules somewhere.

No surprise, but the show's already been renewed for Season 8. :disco:

Guess that means there's no plans for another AllStars just yet, unless they squeeze another shortened version in-between seasons.

#yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssss

I'm halfway through season 4, hate Phi Phi (although he's quite cute) and Willem. Love Sharon and Chad.

Please tell me this utter stud returns in future seasons!

Needless to say I'm already having a preemptive :disco: overload for episode 9.

I've still to watch the Dempsy Awards she-bang. Looks like I'll have about 3-4 hours to put aside on Tuesday then, I can't wait.

6 can't wait for
7 Kenya Michaels watch out
8 this is far too ambiguous to interpret or wonder if two that hate each other might have to patch things up
9 just... :disco:

I know it's been 30 years, but it's at times like this I wish Edith Massey was still with us.

I think I've realised what is, in my opinion, in danger of killing the show off (other than the lapse in quality of the contestants over time) - its become too introspective/self referential. Especially in this season, the Shakesqueer challenge being the best example, I've found that a lot of the comedy/humour relies on a knowledge of previous season queens and quotes/situations that arose from them, to the point that it can be slightly ostracising for a new or wider audience. Even for dedicated fans. I watch the series with a few of my closest gurlfrehns religiously - they've seen everything from season two onwards, they love the show and even they've started being a bit 'huh?' about the in-jokes recently.

I'm all for rewarding the long term audience with the odd wink to seasons past but when your scripts are primarily bulked out with catchphrases from long forgotten contestants or even visual nods to looks/scenes, this appears to be a symptom of a show that's running out of steam/ideas. (and I'm a Doctor Who fan who lived through the eighties - I KNOW THIS SHIT)

Maybe I'm over-thinking it.

No, I absolutely agree. Its all a bit TOO knowing, especially when the show no longer has a cult following, but has become fairly mainstream within the gay community. The Shakesqueer thing annoyed me for that precise reason, cos it elevated quotes and quips that didn't even WARRANT that kind of attention.

"How is she though" with wink (Gia) was one of them I remember but there were many more. They should just use references to pop or subculture rather than their own narrative - it has a big distancing effect.

Nah, I think it cements a legacy and the fact that the contestants, from pork chop to magnolia, aren't always forgotten. The show stands up to repeated viewings where characters you hated you sort of acknowledge or accept more as having brought something, etc. If anything is killing the show, its band wagon jumping. A bit like how some of the self-confessed biggest fans guest judges miss the mark.

This makes more sense to me. Self referencing, while it may be self indulgent, definitely doesn't alienate first time viewers at this point. That kinda thing only happens when the self referencing becomes too exclusive and starts to take itself too seriously. But so far on the show new viewers will have no idea WHAT is a self reference and WHAT isn't, so they're more likely to emulate particular points and quirks than feel distanced. Especially younger viewers. This is my first time watching the show and I'm probably missing most of the self references, thinking they're just regular drag code.

Yeah it's not like more than a small minority of their viewers would have seen Paris Is Burning in the early seasons - or had a clue who Little Edie was.

They just need better writers. The last few sketches just weren't funny.

I think it's a mixture of fatigue (no show survives 7 seasons without a dud or at least for me without me getting tired of it), bad casting, the comedown after what was arguably the best season, unfunny writing and yes too much backrolls, hiiiiii, okuuuur and similar references.

Also there's my theory that odd numbered seasons are always bad compared to the even numbered season which can proven by looking at my rankings of the seasons (6,4,2,3,5,1).

Reddit also doesn't help with the vague rumours and posts which can't be proven but can still make me question the integrity of the show. Like I know it's a reality show but I don't need to know every detail of how they reshoot some things and edit them.

Tuesdays are so treacherous. Trying to get through the work day without looking at Twitter/Reddit or finding out the result some other way is stressful.

NO SPOILERZ

Totally, I have to remind myself not to check twitter or Instagram for spoilers.

Only five more hours to go.

Instagram is the worst especially when it comes to the queens themselves. I have had to unfollow them until they've been eliminated.

Adore is doing an actual UK tour with her band and is charging £45-56.

Seriously! Kylie tickets were cheaper!

As a rule, I don't follow any queens until the season is over.

Any suggestions on where to watch this, preferably good quality? I look online but the quality is never really good.

I can't enjoy a TV show if I know he quality isn't great. I'm also scared to google because I don't want to see spoilers!
