A Topic for Male Celebrities Rape/Sexual Assault Scandals

I really don't think his size/appearence comes into it. I mean Polanski and Woody Allen are hardly HOT TO TROT. I think it's more that, as powerful as he is, he's not a creative, so he's ultimately replaceable. In fact, his power is entirely based on reputation and influence rather than talent, so when that reputation is tarnished, he's essentially worthless.

Not that it necessarily excuses people like Winslet for working with them, but you can't just hire another Roman Polanski or Woody Allen any more than you could have replaced Michael Jackson when all the weird stuff came out about him in the 90s. Their movies are brand names to themselves.

The misogyny in some of the reporting this morning is rank, some serious victim blaming about the "silence".

Weinstein seems like a pig but he's only a symptom of a larger problem.

I just find it really bizarre that all these stars are claiming they didn't know.

That's clearly nonsense. They knew and chose to say nothing as they knew it could damage their career were they to say anything (it's now a bit clearer why Rosanna Arquette; Mira Sorvino and Rose McGowan seemed to fade away so quickly - they stood up to hm.)

I fully believe he is a sleaze but it's a bit disingenuous for Paltrow to condemn him for his behaviour in 1994 and then to return working with him again and again.

Matt Damon has been deafening in his silence on this - he has worked repeatedly with Weinstein and has 2 upcoming movies produced by him?

Is he going to pretend he knew nothing as well?

This was an open secret for years. Why is it all coming out now?

I thought Damon was already called out as having "silenced" some article about Weinstein but then that was disproved and backed up by the journalist involved?

That's the odd thing for me. It's the "casting couch", isn't it? It's happen since TIME BEGAN!

It seems every time one of these types of stories come out it paves the way for more people to come out. Like it started last year with a lowly film critic and then last month another critic and festival partner and of course the Cosby case. I think the support that the victims are getting makes more of them willing to come out especially when they see that the perpetrators are in the least having their career/legacy destroyed even if no criminal charges are brought up.

I don't know if I would blame someone like Paltrow for working with him again, he was a big time producer and she wanted a career. Culture plays a big part in situation like that and I guess the mentality then for most people was "get over it, nothing happened, don't waste your career over a silly man asking for a massage".

At least Harvey was actually getting them parts in Hollywood films. I'm sure there's any number of women who could tell a story about the producer who met her off the bus from the Midwest and then a couple of months later he's complaining about all the money he's spent to promote her career and the movie that he's got her a part in seems to be called 'Anally Blonde 47'.

I guess it's one of those things that's (quietly) considered acceptable - or at least an inevitable fact of life - until it isn't. Now that the genie is out of the bottle, everyone's scrambling to distance themselves as much as possible.

This is definitely only the beginning of this. I imagine there are a lot of terrified execs and directors walking around Hollywood this week. Who knows where it'll end?

I can fully believe that the likes of Judi Dench didn't know, maybe even Meryl. They were long established and respected before HW came along and they were probably living in a bubble where this stuff didn't happen in their worlds.

There's also the statute of limitations in California, so while say for example a young actress didn't say anything at the time since she didn't want to hinder her career, after 20 years have passed if she said anything alone and risked people not believing her or others not coming forward, the accused could sue her for defamation and she could never take legal action against him. It's the same with the Cosby case as there are only one or two that haven't passed the statute in their respective states.

Rose McGowan in particular has been very forthcoming over the past few years about this kind of stuff, so she's been very brave.

I always wondered why Mira Sorvino did so little of note after her Oscar win, she's a great actress. Sometimes it really is just luck, but it's very easy to believe that she lost work after pissing off the wrong person. And once there's a concrete example of that happening to one actress, I suppose anyone coming after her would be even more incentivised to keep schtum.

I can understand why his vicims chose to stay quiet - he could ruin their career and reputation (Mira Sorvino; Rosanna Arquette; Rose McGowan).

I can even understand why some of his targets would continue to work with him after his harassment of them (Paltrow says that Brad Pitt confronted him about his behaviour after he harassed her in casting 'Emma' when she was 22) as he could get you an Oscar ('Shakespeare in love').

I can understand how male stars (Clooney; Damon; Pitt; Tarantino) chose to stay quiet as this casting couch harassment is part and parcel of that industry.

I just don't understand why him and why now?

Weinstein is a sleaze. But he's one of many (see also Bryan Singer; Woody Allen; Roman Polanski - and most creepily of all the allegedly 'child-loving' Dan Schneider of Nickleodeon).

As Sheena mentioned above the casting couch is as old as Hollywood. There is nothing unique or new about his actions in that industry.

Not excusing Weinstein, but it seems more than coincidental that both the New York Times newspaper and the New Yorker magazine had detailed stories about him ready to go simultaneously but independently of each other.

Just seems very strange.

I think the New Yorker piece has been in the works for like a year and they had to rush it out once the other one broke (I would assume Paltrow and Jolie were last minute additions). Also it's by Ronan Farrow which kinda makes sense why he would be working on a story like that.

Now Ben Affleck is getting caught up in this.

He released the a statement condemning Weinstein's behaviour saying that it sickened him and that they must all work to prevent it recurring.

Rose McGowan then accused Affleck of lying say that he was well aware that Weinstein had assaulted her while she and Affleck were working on 'Phantoms' in 2003 because she had told him.

Then former TRL presenter Hilarie Burton joined the fray stating that when she was 21 in the year 2001 that Affleck had groped her live on air. She posted a clip of the incident.

The other thing I've been thinking of today is whether there are any women in powerful positions who get away with this shit and whether it will come up. I mean, the "older woman-younger man" scenario has played out MANY a time, but how many times was that due to coercion?

Well this is becoming FUN.

Well exactly. And if you're in a career which is notoriously fickle in any case, why would you do something to lessen your chance of a sustainable career, when all around you (if it was such an open secret) are people playing by the seemingly accepted rules?

The 'why have they waited until now?' discussion (and the fact that it is still being discussed at all) is thoroughly depressing.

JESUS CUNTING CHRIST. I'll have whatever she's snorting cause it takes a lot of (eight) BALLS to stand up for him

'Stand up' for Harvey Weinstein: Lindsay Lohan reportedly defends mogul in now-deleted post

"Mean Girls" star Lindsay Lohan on Tuesday reportedly spoke out in defense of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and said she did not “think it’s right what’s going on.”

The actress made the now-deleted comments in two Instagram Story videos, EOnline.com reported.

"I feel very bad for Harvey Weinstein right now, I don't think it's right what's going on," Lindsay explained, according to EOnline.com. "I think Georgina needs to take a stand and be there for her husband."

Lohan went on: "He's never harmed me or did anything to me — we've done several movies together. I think everyone needs to stop — I think it's wrong. So stand up."

Meanwhile, Georgina Chapman, Weinstein’s wife, has announced that she is leaving her husband of 10 years.

Despite an initial statement from Weinstein earlier this week claiming that his wife is dedicated to standing by him, Chapman released a statement of her own to People, explaining that she’s leaving her husband and named the recent sexual assault allegations as the reason.

“My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time,” her statement read.

On Sunday, Weinstein was fired from his film studio and reportedly started counseling to help him “turn over a new leaf” regarding the way he treats women. The news came on the same day that the New Yorker posted a follow-up to an exposé from the New York Times in which several women accused Weinstein of harassing them.

Either that or she's a massive stupid cunt. I know what my money is on.

I’m sure it HAPPENS but i’d imagine that even proportionally (taking into account how fewer women in positions of power there likely are), it pales in comparison. I’d go as far as suggesting that instances of harassment against men are more likely to be committed by other men.

Cara Delevingne and Lea Seydoux have both also come out with Harvey horror stories.

Bloody hell at this. This video has been on YouTube for the last 11 years. If I’d seen it earlier I’d definitely have had a different opinion on Ben Affleck.

I can see he’s drunk and the woman is nervously going along with it, but it’s uncomfortable to watch.

What the fuck was that in aid of?

Some promo spot for Jersey Girl, but how or why THAT ended up being broadcast is beyond me. Wasn't he engaged to Jennifer Lopez at the time?

I'm totally gay for Cara Delevingne to start with but the story is just awful and I just love her more for how she handled such a dreadful situation.

This morning's storm - Rose MacGowan banned from Twitter while her abusers are still free to roam its digital wastelands. Again, could this prove a tipping point.

I'm kind of getting more and more suspicious about the motives of the powerbrokers in Hollywood on this subject(not of the actresses speaking about their abuse).

This is becoming the perfect storm.

Harvey Weinstein is a sleazy harasser, no-one is disputing that.

But the way the news is going, it's like he was an isolated creep, solely responsible for all the evils in Hollywood.

We all know he's not.

But he's now the scapegoat. Keep the focus shining brightly on him. But solely on him and the many people who also participated and enabled this behaviour will slither away, reputation intact. And nothing will change.

Marilyn Monroe got her break through the casting couch. Has nothing changed since?

The theory is that it's a conspiracy to take down Ben Affleck and ruin the D.C. Universe. You're in good company.

Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson calls Harvey Weinstein a predator in a new interview with the BBC, and says the disgraced Miramax co-founder is just “the top of a very particular iceberg.”

In the interview set to air later today on BBC Newsnight, the Howards Endactress says harassment is “endemic” to the Hollywood system, and that Weinstein is “at the top of the ladder of a system of harassment and belittling and bullying and interference and what my mother would have referred to in the olden days as ‘pestering.'” (Watch a clip below).

Recalling the euphemism of earlier times, Thompson says, “‘Is he pestering you?’ That’s the word we used to use in the olden days, if you recall. This has been part of our world, women’s world, since time immemorial. So what we need to start talking about is the crisis in masculinity, the crisis of extreme masculinity, which is this sort of behavior…”

Asked whether there are others like Weinstein in the Hollywood industry, Thompson responds, “Of course, many. Maybe not to that degree. Do they have to all be as bad as him to make it count?”

At one point, Thompson also says points to Donald Trump, saying such behavior “is represented by the most powerful man in the world at the moment.”

I know it shouldn’t be important, but that punctuation is atrocious.

Rose McGowan was suspended yesterday from Twitter for 12 hours for swearing at Ben Affleck.

When she came back she accused Jeff Bezos of Amazon of colluding with rapists.

Amazon Studios has some projects in the works with the Weinstein company. McGowan says she informed the head of Amazon Studios - Roy Price - about Weinstein raping her. Price told her she was not credible.

Price is now indefinitely suspended from Amazon.
