It passed me by until The Official Chart Company posted it on Twitter this morning. I got REALLY IRRATIONALLY IRATE about it and had to stop looking :D
 
I think something like that is really interesting as a curio.

I just wish the OCC would stop trying to rewrite history and pretend that the way things are now is the way they’ve always been.

Oh it's a fun curio, but shouldn't be used in the way it is.

And it's the more IRKSOME devaluation of a million seller that's MOST annoying
 
Agreed.

They did that list about a year ago listing every million seller (around 300 of them?).
Now, I get that a lot of the tracks that are popular these days also don't have the chance to be big actual sellers, as the #1 sales figure is around 7-8k per week, so they don't stand a chance.

But it is simply fucking ridiculous when I saw Shawn Mendes' #6 or whatever single 'Treats You Better' has apparently 'sold' more than 'Wannabe', which was #1 for seven weeks in a high sales period.

It just cannot be taken seriously. 'Work From Home' the biggest girl band song ever? Come off it.

He won the much coveted Brits Critics Choice award this year I think. I haven’t heard a single song by him.

He's not really in the Capaldi category, and I quite like the shameless Springsteen cribbing.
 
For the remix of Sam Fenders Hypersonic Missiles is one of my most played this year.

It seems to be on their website. Whether they were selling it at the concerts or whether it would count I'm not sure, but I imagine getting #1 on that chart may not even need sales of four figures these days.
 
Concert sales never used to count- I remember Sarah from Saint Etienne telling me that’s why they didn’t have copies of Words and Music (I think, anyway, might have been Home Counties) on sale the week at a gig they did the week it was released.

I can’t say I saw them at the gig I went to. They had copies of Magne’s new album there signed- but at £35 I didn’t bite, and went to Amazon instead.
 
I can't imagine you'd need 4 figures to top the vinyl singles chart, 3 would do. Even on RSD, there's 500 editions in its top 10.

The way 'round it is to run them through your chart registered webstore - I saw a self-releasing indie band do that earlier in the year. It required a card machine and an iPad.
 
I was looking through Spotify earlier, and came across a new album by The Script. It only has 9 tracks? Is that common now? Hardly value for money.
 
Albums seem to be one way or the other over the last few years. Either 8 or 9 tracks or 20 track playlist type affairs. To be honest, I prefer a shorter, more cohesive album.

I'm not sure value for money means anything these days when hardly anyone buys anything, anyway.
 
Really? It shows you the last time that I paid attention to new album track lists. I think fans are definitely getting short changed if they are waiting on a new album from their favourite artist for them only to churn out 8 or 9 tracks after being away for God knows how long. The only thing that screams to me is that they probably should not have bothered as they must be going through a phase of WRITERS BLOCK.
 
More than ever in music, value is determined by the consumer. The same person who turns their nose-up at a £10 CD will by a £25 double album with a couple of tracks *less* than the CD (this is common in dance/electronic music). People pay £70-80 for box set editions of albums they already own several times over but won't risk £8-£10 on a CD by a new artist even if they like what they've heard so far. Weird times.
 
Personally, I like albums to come in between 35-45 minutes. That's enough time to say your piece without labouring it at any one time. The current Ezra Furman album is 11 songs and is over and out in less than 28 minutes. It's probably my favourite of the year. And the Best Album Ever - "Spirit Of Eden" by Talk Talk - has 6 songs and lasts a smidge over 40 minutes.
 
My memory is of most albums usually coming in between 10-15 tracks.
 
10-12 was normal in the LP era I grew up within - CDs saw things expand out a bit too much and now they're contracting again now that people want more and more vinyl.
 
Yes, I remember 10-12 tracks as well. And OH THE EXCITEMENT at a cassette format bonus track.
 
I think most acts who release albums of 8 or 9 tracks are the kind whose fanbase likes an 'album' as a concept and listen to them as a piece of work. A lot of these longer albums are just playlists, designed in the hope that people will just repeatedly stream a handful of tracks which they latch on to. As we've discussed before, from a chart perspective that's all you need.

I know they had about a million number 1’s in the day, but I really didn’t think a comeback would be quite this big. Boy bands aside from Take That haven’t fared all that well after a hiatus have they?
 
Maybe I was just hopeful that people had now came to their senses and they would bomb.
 
They were always shit but had a big fanbase. Steps success surprised me way more.
 
They have Ed Sheeran all over their new material too which sounds very Radio 2 friendly.

I was quite surprised when they were on Strictly the other week that they let the blond two sing now.

They shouldn’t have bothered as I have heard better vocals down at the local when the Rugby players get gassed up.
