RAGING.

I would be happy with Wham getting the Christmas number one. PLEASE not Ladbaby or Ed Sheeran & Stormzy.

Does Mariah have no chance at all? :( Unless a crazy fan KILLS HER this week, of course.

I would LOVE a Mariah number one, but any Christmas song would do.

What I do not understand is why Ladbaby is getting so many streams now they make up the majority of the chart?

LadBaby isn't getting streams - it isn't in the top 200 on spotify. I'm guessing its lead on the chart is solely due to it being so far ahead on downloads; it's still outselling Stormzy 6:1 (and Mariah 14:1).

And apparently picking up decent video streams as well, although I've forgotten how they count to the final chart.

Thanks to @Kate, I notice there's a campaign to get Jarvis Cocker's "C*nts Are Still Running The World" to No 1 for Xmas. Does this have any traction? I mean, it'll get no airplay but then Ladbaby is getting none either.

#16 on itunes currently (so just behind Mariah and ahead of Wham!, and being outsold by LadBaby by about 17:1), but currently slowly gaining. Although I believe it only really started picking up yesterday, so it's given all the others a real head start, and with the lack of streaming I suspect the challenge will amount to nothing.

Yeah, I didn't know about it until yesterday. I already own the song tho' so I'm not keen on buying it again if it's not going anywhere.

Also worth nothing that Jarvis regrets the use of the C-word and now sings it as "Pricks Are Still Running The World" as he notes that virtually all the people in question are male.

I read that yesterday, but I saw him earlier this year and he did it with "cunts".

I see. It is, after all, a better word. Moopy doesn't have PRICK OF THE MONTH for a reason.

I only noticed because Kate asked me as well but then I couldn't turn the fucking notifications off despite ABOUT AN HOUR OF TRYING and me not signing up to it ANYWAY so I won't be CUNTING anyone off this Christmas at all.

#TEAMMARIAH

So LadBaby is selling like hot cakes then? First the tories, now THIS. :manson:

But it's for CHARIDEE, Reet!

Jarvis needs to come out and say he'll donate his royalties to charity too. Preferably an antifa one.

Yeah, but cunts don't buy Jarvis Cocker. They buy sausage rolls.

I imagine Harry will end up at #3 though

I read somewhere that Slade makes the most money out of all the Christmas songs. Is that because Noddy Holder wrote it and Mariah, Wham, and The Pogues didn’t?

All those songs were at least partly written by the artist, weren't they? So I don't think it's that.

As a child, I'd say Slade was probably the song I associated most with Christmas as it was the one I think I heard most. But I think in the download and streaming era the big three now have surpassed them. I think perhaps that MAY have been true in the past, but I'd be very surprised if it was still the case.

It was a pretty recent article. Certainly in the last year or 2 and apparently Noddy Holder makes 500k annually from Merry Christmas Everybody.

It doesn't say how they worked that list though

*insert I wanna see the receipts gif here*

Yes, it was that one. It does seem like it HAS to be regurgitated from years ago. Slade, Bing Crosby, Jona Lewis etc don’t really set the charts alight in 2019, do they?

Well before downloads and then streaming became a thing, I imagine those older songs particularly did really well from licensing to Christmas compilations, but that hasn't really been a thing for several years.

It’s not all about charts and sales though. They get used so much in adverts, movies, TV shows, licensing for complications etc that the royalties roll in.

I don’t know WHY as I was never really a big fan of the band, but I was most pleased by Tony Mortimer of East 17 making a pretty penny annually from Stay Another Day.

Do they get money every time their Christmas song is played on the music channels? They have channels dedicated to Christmas songs where they just play on a loop all day.

"Merry Christmas Everybody" was written by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea (the latter being the group's bassist). They wrote all the group's songs together until the last album where Jim Lea wrote a bunch on his own. "Fairytale.." was written by Shane MacGowan and Jem Finer. Finer was the group's accordion player, IIRC.

I know Mariah has writing credit. Dunno about Wham and Pogues.
Surely George Michael wrote or co-wrote Last Christmas?

Just checked and wrote it by himself.

Anyway, if the sausages song is the Xmas #1 I declare the UK chart IRRELEVANT anymore. Thank God for the USA (can't believe I said that) saving Christmas.

That's true of course, but I guess the chart is an easy place to start in terms of seeing them compared to each other.

Either way though, I'm dubious of a Daily Mail article from 4 years ago seemingly without any sources, particularly when streaming has increased so much since then.

Oh we came to terms with that years ago! It's only the :david: in us that keeps us chatting about it.
