Awards Season 22/23

Actress roundtable with Emma Corrin, Danielle Deadwyler, Claire Foy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh.

Sadly no Isabelle Huppert-esque iconograaphy, but Michelle Yeoh is utterly charming.

I know the Golden Globes are a joke and barely mean anything at all anymore, but having Austin Butler in the Drama category where other major musician biopic performances were traditionally classed in Musical/Comedy is frustrating me for the sake of consistency.

It feels like Michelle Williams has fallen to third place (The Fabelmans in general seems to have petered out) behind Cate and Michelle Yeoh.

Oh that is 100% a two horse race at this point.

As, seemingly, is Supporting Actress between Kerry Condon and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Kinda implying that he’s gay

(Will Smith not Jerrod)

Big snub for Michelle Williams. Please don't let Oscar actually nominate Ana De Armas for Blonde, I really don't want to watch it.

What a dreadful monologue. Save this crap for your own show. Fine, MENTION IT, but surely mention at least ONE thing to do with films and television? Otherwise what’s the point?

SAG is a good indicator because all these people are in the academy as well and the actors are the biggest branch. A nice bump for Women Talking.

Not understanding the nominations for Angela Bassett. Must be a “career nomination”. I mean she was given better material in Olympus Has Fallen compared to Wakanda Forever.

Academy Award Nominee Jamie Lee Curtis

Serious Oprah Winfrey GIF

She was the best thing about WF but yeah it feels like grabbing onto the chance to give her an award. She should have won for playing Tina.

As always I never fully catch up with what's what on these things, but are the chances looking good for a Jamie Lee Oscar nom? That would be just lovely. An unlikely win but a nomination would be a moment

I think she’s guaranteed a nomination, the most likely acting win from the movie is Ke Huy Quan.

She's extremely likely at this point, she's appearing in all of the precursors.

JLC, Kerry Condon and Angela Basset look locked on, with the last two slots fairly open. (Hong Chau in The Whale probably in fourth).

As for who wins, the momentum is with Basset after last night, but I wouldn't be surprised if JLC actually took it as she's beloved in the industry and in a more substantial film.

Eddie Redmayne feels like he came out of nowhere with the nominations recently unless he was always there and I never noticed because it’s not a cinematic release. Anyway I saw that movie kinda by accident and he’s fantastic in it, so I’m supportive of this.

this is the moment of the night :D

it does feel like this year's general field is really dry and completely lacking momentum for anything left field or unexpected. who cares about The Fabelmans, really?

I think I'm behind Michelle for Actress and Everything Everywhere for Picture. Cate is so good in Tár but no one seems to know or care about the film.

No James Cameron which puts Top Gun higher on the best movie list.

I think it’s a decent year personally. All of the categories besides Supporting Actor are competitive. Cate vs Michelle, Brendan Fraser vs Colin Farrell, Angela Basset vs Jamie Lee Curtis vs Kerry Condon. Much less predictable than the last few years!

I think actor is Ferrel v Austin Buttler v Fraser. There’s a good chance any of them will get it, it seems the buzz for Fraser has died down after the festivals (might pick up again).

I just went scrolling through wondering who Ferrel was and what on earth Will Ferrell might have done to be in Oscar contention until I realised who you meant.

I'd be ecstatic if Jamie Lee won but I feel it would only be fair if Michelle wins hers since she kind of IS that film

A lot of the Oscar racers come down to story vs momentum. Story meaning who’s turn is it to get it, is it time for black person to win, is it a legend legacy win, etc

If they go momentum it’ll be Colin Farrell, I agree he’s in the driving seat at this very moment.

If they go story it’ll be Fraser, given his comeback and surprising performance

Yeah, Farrell deserves it by virtually every metric, but I don't trust the Academy not to follow sentiment and give it to Fraser.

Butler... maybe? I guess the film made a lot of money compared to the other two. But I wouldn't read too much into the Golden Globe win, Fraser basically withdrew from that competition when he announced before the voting that he had no intention of attending or accepting the award.

Honestly Fraser really deserves it for that performance. I must say the trailer doesn’t do the film justice at all.

Farrell was the only thing I actually liked about Banshees, and having watched Elvis! 3 times now I’d be perfectly happy with Butler too.

I could imagine a scenario where Butler/Farrell win a lot of precursors, but the Academy will give it to Fraser - see 2021, when Hopkins won while everyone thought the Oscar was going to Boseman.
Butler has the biopic/box office hit advantage, Farrell is in a well-liked movie and McDonagh is academy catnip these days, Fraser has the comeback story and is ACTING through prosthetics. Fraser's movie is shaping up to be true indie hit, so that might be in his favour, even though the film itself is so divisive.
I still haven't seen Elvis or The Whale, but I don't think Farrell was that special (neither was Gleeson). The true stars of Banshees are the scenery and Condon/Keoghan (and Jenny the donkey) IMO.

I think Yeoh will take Best Actress, the movie seems much more liked that Tár and they could finally give the statue to an Asian actress.

Supporting is weird. I don't see Bassett winning for a Marvel movie. I love JLC, but that performance was a bit too panto for me. I loved Condon, so I hope she'll take it, but I don't think that's going to happen.

I honestly don't know how Supporting Actor will pan out.

I think supporting actor is kinda done now, same as with Troy Kotsure last year. It’s a loved movie and guaranteed way to award it (it still has chances for actress and movie).

I haven’t seen Elvis so I don’t know what his performance is like but regarding biopic Oscar wins:

Elvis is a BAZ LUHRMAN biopic though, so that should tell you all you need to know :disco:

Amused that the Globes got such a big buzz for their return (and all those front pages), they really have name recognition like no other awards show.

I'm working my way through all the contenders at the moment, and think it's been a very decent year. Haven't seen Fabelmans yet though... :D

The Fabelmans really tanked here, nothing for Spielberg, Paul Dano or Michelle Williams. Women Talking is probably dead too, if Claire Foy and Jessie Buckley aren't showing up here they're unlikely to get into the Oscars.

Angela Basset continues her precursors sweep, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Kerry Condon right behind her.

Angela Bassett once again REALLY? FFS, give her a half decent role and she can run away with this any time, but not for this poorly written fluff.

Again, Carey Mulligan for Supporting? Then who is the lead in that film? At least give it to Lashana Lynch for The Woman King as that’s a far more interesting performance.

ANA DE ARMAS WHAT? WHY? In WHAT WORLD?

Still don’t get the love for Banshees. I’m Team Elvis right now.
