So I went to a shooting range for the first time last weekend and got to use a handgun for the first time and it's...outrageously easy.

Now my friends are trying to convince me to purchase a gun for protection. And yes I live in a 'dangerous city' [insert cliche Chicago joke here], but it seems so OTT.

I know this topic can be sensitive, cuz it's hard to talk about it in isolation, but just curious about people's thoughts on personal protection or experience with your/others' gun ownership.

Poll is anonymous.

What American nonsense is this please?

I don't have any interest, but if I lived in a country where they were commonplace I probably would own and learn to use one.

Anytime I've played Lazer Quest I've been dead last so I don't think it'd be a good idea.

I did well at axe throwing though.

I still own an air rifle. Mr F and I used to be in a target shooting club and I used to be quite good at it, although I was better with an air pistol, unfortunately there were no suitable ranges nearby when we moved back up north twenty years ago so we gave it up.

I'd love to have a go with a real handgun at a range though.

My bf and I have been quite obsessively listening to a quite awful supernatural podcast for about a year and every (user submitted) story seems to start with a 2 minute detailed description of the gun they own (before they inevitably shoot a wolf man).

Who knew there was such variety.

Interestingly my namesake, who keeps handing out my personal email address thinking it's his, is a member of a gun club. A bit of identity fraud and maybe i could get a rifle.

the whole concept is beyond scary so no thank you .. and I’m just thankful I live in a country where this is the general consensus. People needing guns to defend themselves in everyday life should just be absurd

Yes I do . You have to die for me, baby. That's right, you have to die for me, baby. How could I move on with my life if you didn't die for me, baby? If you didn't die for me, baby? I need you to die for me, baby. Bang bang, shot you dead, shot my lover in the head. Now my lover is dead, and I have no regrets. He deserved it. And I'm going straight to hell. And I've got a lot of friends there. And if I see that bitch in hell? I'm gonna shoot him in the head again cause I wanna see him die over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Now drive bitch. I said drive bitch. And while you're at it, die bitch. That's right drive bitch. Now drive bitch. I said drive bitch. And while you're at it, die bitch. That's right drive bitch. Now if you're gonna act like a bitch, then you're gonna die like a bitch.

Sensitive topic my ass. Absolutely not, no I never would and anyone who does is really dumb.

But I do love paintballing, laser quest and I went to Clays on Friday which was super fun. :D (Though I was shit).

I have a two year old godson who I look after quite a lot. The idea of having something in my flat that he could accidentally blow his brains out with, no matter how securely locked away I might think it is, makes my blood run cold. I worry enough about the fact he can now reach my cutlery drawer.

Given gunshot wounds are (I believe) the #1 cause of infant death in America, I find the cognitive dissonance around that so confounding. But I do recognise that as a British person who came of age in the time of Dunblane, I’m a lot more culturally conditioned to see guns as a weapon of violence rather than a fact of life.

I haven’t yet, but I would go to a range or take a gun safety class. They freak me out so much, and it’s probably better to know something about them, since so many people in the US have them

I'm borderline phobic of guns. If I watch a movie and there's a gun scene, I have to look away. They scare the shit out of me and I wouldn't want to be within any distance of a gun, ever. They are absolutely terrifying.

No, and the thought terrifies me. Even if I had one "for protection", I'd be petrified someone would use it on me.

I have dreams where I'm being chased by people with guns and it's a big fear.

I guess in a Hunger Games situation is probably have to own one tho. But I'd never shoot an animal. Maybe a person.

No, absolutely no interest in owning or even touching a gun. I always feel that knives are more personal anyway.

The Relationship Between Gun Ownership and Stranger and Nonstranger Firearm Homicide Rates in the United States, 1981–2010
Results. We found no robust, statistically significant correlation between gun ownership and stranger firearm homicide rates. However, we found a positive and significant association between gun ownership and nonstranger firearm homicide rates.
Conclusion. Get a gun if you're seeking to get yourself, an acquaintance or family member killed. Otherwise it's not worth the risk.

I've shot guns a few times, it's amazing how different it is to how it's depicted in film. The recoil, hot shells bouncing off your face etc.

Zero interest in actually owning one though, and I genuinely can't understand why anyone would want to.
