Paris 2024 - Day 0 - The Opening Ceremony (Fri 26 July)

So, what is that Coco Chanel quote about taking something OFF being going out of the house? The ceremony was giving ARTPOP-era brainstorm energy, but less interesting.

Céline alone made it bearable. Aya Nakamura really did the absolute least. Macron look annoyed.

The fact that she closed the ceremony and then it cut to the credits was *chefs' kiss* :disco:

I missed the first couple of hours so rewinding back through some highlights now.

Lady Gaga doing 3 minutes of Roxxxy Andrews-style cabaret in between Bahrain and Bangladesh was... a choice.

I have no idea who any of them are! You'd be the same if it was a parade of Eurovision legends.
Imagine THAT down the Seine.

‘And there’s San Marino. Valentina Monetta competing at her fifth contest here and naturally chosen to bear the Sammarinese flag’

Bum budadum budabum badabum

Had to leave after Gaga (I had assumed she'd be BACK) and returned for Celine. Did I miss anything in between, beyond the heavens opening?

I’m sure this is meant to sound triumphant, but I'm just imagining the GALLIC SHRUG.

It's very
Gerard Butler Love GIF

The Seine was a bit meh but besides that what a solidly progressive show full of faggotry. The threesome scene. The decapitated Marie-Antoinette. The Last Supper played by a butch lesbian DJ and a whole lot of drag queens. Add on top of that a bit of EU and Aya Nakamura and every fucking Le Pen in the country is raging :disco:

That most striking performance visual of her entire career. Celine looked like she'd seen unimaginable horrors and was singing to save us all.

The reviews are in!

The most striking moment of the night came at its end, as the Olympic cauldron was lit inside a hot air balloon. It launched into the night sky like a floating, orange-red orb. A magnificent spectacle, finally, set again Celine Dion’s evocative rendition of Edith Piaf’s L’Hymne à l’amour. The ceremony could have done with so much more of this class.
