Lady Gaga - Harlequin

I kind of wish she'd put out 'Happy Mistake' instead of that one with Bruno Mars to be a hit for the mums.

It's stunning.

And the irony of the fan reaction online is not lost on the second verse. This is a person saying "you all loved me while I was a fucked up mess, and that was extremely confusing and traumatic". Cut to the gays: we liked you better like that, give us that again. You can tell from watching her live performances of the ARTPOP era (Do What U Want on Alan Carr, Artpop on Jimmy Fallon) that she was really unwell and depressed. All her career choices since then telegraph very clearly that she doesn't want to go back to being that girl (Chromatica being the project she was clearly the least invested in over the last decade).

I get that the tease / marketing / visuals that accompanied this album suggested something different than the majority of this album - and I think dropping Happy Mistake + The Joker as an EP might have felt more like a visual / sonic match - but it is what it is.

To be fair, she made her name and her money on being “that girl” so it’s not ENTIRELY unreasonable for her fans to feel a bit lost by her career choices, since, right?

Unless you’re talking only about the ARTPOP era, which, if you are, doesn’t make sense as NOT MANY liked her then anyway :D

There is, of course, a lot of fan hysteria over what is an interim project which no one was ever claiming was a proper Gaga album.

Is Happy Mistake an original song? And if so is it the only original on the album?

Her fans can't have it both ways. They love that she is versatile, so to outright attack her when she demonstrates that versatility is stupid. Just smile, nod, and stream jewels N drugs until the XX of October.

Yes. 'Happy Mistake' and 'Folie à Deux' are both original songs.

Interesting. The other one I didn't mind was "World On A String" althought I've only listened once. I instantly binned the rest :D

I wonder if it'll be worth a revisit over Christmas. I do like a bit of jazz standard listenage at Christmas.

I’m sorry but I don’t subscribe to the “she was done with chromatica 5 minutes after its release and she only did it as a gay tick box thing”.
It was released during the pandemic after all
And she still did live shows

I do think she’s a versatile musician but also clearly has her eye on having a Hollywood career as a credible actor (and why not? She clearly can do it).

Sooner or later she may have to say something similar to what chapell roan did. Her fans don’t “own” her.

goosebumps. incredible performance. the vocal... :disco: (minus points for the camerawork)

also, she doesn't have many good ballads at all (off the top of my head: Always Remember Us This Way, Before I Cry, Hold My Hand and to some degree Shallow) but Happy Mistake is stunningly gorgeous innit? it's so understated vocally for the first half, she sounds depressed as shit... and when she lets rip? :disco:

I like singers, I very rarely listen to people who cannot sing.

Are we disregarding Gagger's very early BALLARDS included in TheFame namely Brown Eyes and Again and Again? Good!

Wow, I prefer that live vocal to the studio version I think. I also like the depressed sounding part more than the really letting rip bit.

I’m sorry but Happy Mistake is incredible and why isn’t it number 1 everywhere yet?

Better than Shallow.

I said what I said.
