Old songs on the UK charts

Can someone crowdfund to offer Spotify payola on Annie Lennox's behalf? Let's get BELLOWING into the charts

Ironically I prefer Mel & Kim's version of Rockin around the Christmas tree, but Brenda Lee's version of Jingle bell rock.

I prefer Mel & Kim's version of it as well.

And probably any other version of Jingle Bell Rock than Bobby Helms.

Interestingly regarding Band Aid, although the versions were combined (and I do have some issues with that), it wasn't reset and left on ACR. I wonder if that was some sort of agreement.
I guess logically they can’t have it both ways. If they’re going get the versions combined by saying it’s a remix of an old song, then that’s presumably not enough to get it off ACR as the “main track” on the EP is still the 1984 version.

If they were going to ask for it to be treated as a new release then I suppose it would have to stand on its own feet chartwise.

Yes, it makes sense. And I rather suspect that it spared a potential blush.

OUT

66 77 Bing Crosby - White Christmas (60wks) (1941)

Wham make it a second week and become Christmas number one for a second year in a row. Old recordings being Xmas no.1 is surprisingly rare - Wham, Queen and Jackie Wilson.

Curiously White Christmas, probably the original Christmas pop classic drops out from 66. Blame Spotify playlisting.

Happily Bruce beats the Jacksons in the battle of 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town'.

Especially looking forward to the new year, when all these songs drop out and some old bangers rechart and I'm dealing with about 5-10 songs.

As we were discussing in the Sam Fender thread, singles are being released now in November, knowing full well they will likely be dumped down or even out of the chart entirely within a week or two, in the hope that they will survive the post-Christmas chart cull, and join the melee for a high placing in January.

It was quite odd watching a few old Christmas week TOTPs this last week, seeing how there were no old Christmas songs in the chart at all. Usually a few novelty tracks and some new Christmas songs, but no old ones.

Now 30 or 40 odd years on, and the Christmas charts of the last several years are pretty much the exact same group of songs in a slightly different order.

Anyway, despite my grumbling, I'm happier with George Michael as Mr Chart Christmas rather than Michael Bublé.

Worth noting that virtually nothing peaked this week. Wham and Jose Gonzalez both matched their peak while Frank Sinatra is the only song reaching a new high.

That potentially changes next week, with Christmas being on Wednesday.

He's performing it now, the first time I've heard it. It's just kind of there. Horrible oversinging, though.

Anyway despite the distraction from Lucy Tiesman, I don't expect Tom Grennan to ever appear in this topic.

Apologies this didn't go ahead. As mentioned I've been quite POORLY. I'll see what I can do now.

I've just done the new entries and re-entries (all old songs regardless of the fact they're new entries or re-entries)

Two points of note - The Americanisation of the UK Christmas charts is complete. Sad.

What the fuck is "Mele Kalikmaka (Merry Christmas)"? Surely no-one in the UK has ever actively played this.

42 RE Bing Crosby - White Christmas (61wks) (1941)
59 RE Eartha Kitt - Santa Baby (21wks)
60 RE Mud - Lonely This Christmas (37wks) (1974)
62 NE Celine Dion - O Holy Night (1wk)
63 RE Pretenders - 2000 Miles (39wks) (1983)
65 RE Eagles - Please Come Home For Christmas (8wks)
67 RE Frank Sinatra - Jingle Bells (6wks)
71 RE Bing Crosby - Mele Kalikmaka (Merry Christmas) (1wk)
72 RE Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping (16wks) (1982)

Honest God's truth that Mele Kalikmaka and Gene Autry are more popular than the Darkness over here

There are versions of Mele Kalikmaka by KT Tunstall and Bette Midler that I have played by choice in the past.

I'm not sure all of them will chart but, the following old songs are all on the Spotify top 50 following New Year's Eve.

13 Mr Brightside
15 I Wanna Dance With Somebody
19 Murder on the Dancefloor
29 We Found Love
30 Yeah!
31 Dancing Queen
41 Tik Tok
48 Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)

"Yeah!"? Is that Usher's song or another I'm not familiar with...

Tomorrow's chart should be fun. Total Xmas clear out, surely.

Expecting about 80 or so re-entries and new entries, with everything else climbing.

Unless Inner Smile and Vicky have been hammering them like perverts on the 29th, I don't expect to see Wham or Mariah even at the very bottom.

GGG was second on Spotify's NYE 2024 playlist, which I assume is largely responsible.

42 01 Wham! - Last Christmas (131wks) (1984)
43 RE Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna - This Is What You Came For (44wks) (2016)
46 RE Disturbed - The Sound of Silence (47wks) (2016)
48 RE The Killers - Mr Brightside (438wks) (
57 RE Imogen Heap - Headlock (5wks) (2006)
62 02 Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You (140wks) (1994)
76 RE Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (147wks) (1998)
81 RE Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere (95wks) (1987)
82 RE Fleetwood Mac - Dreams (101wks) (1977)
83 RE Journey - Don't Stop Believin (108wks) (1981)
84 RE Coldplay - Yellow (43wks) (1999)
85 04 Brenda Lee - Rockin Around The Christmas Tree (81wks) (1958)
86 RE Vance Joy - Riptide (158wks) (2013)
98 RE Sophie Ellis Bextor - Murder on the Dancefloor (38wks) (2001)
99 RE Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody (25wks) (1987)
100 RE Kings of Leon - Sex On Fire (129wks) (2008)

Big week for old songs, Christmas is dumped bar three. Mostly generic re-entries, but Whitney appears to be the generic family party staple. SEB goes back in via her New Years Eve show and generally being confirmed as a party staple.

Biggest curiosity is Imogen Heap at 57.

I don't get why Iris is so popular. It's not terrible, but it's hardly a standout track of the century so far!

It’s not a standout track of this century at all. It’s from 1998.

She was trending because she took part in some stunt with a bunch of singers. Fair play it’s done very well for her and just as she’s plugging a new album too.

It has been on a ton of reaction vids on YouTube the last few years and it’s on a ton of playlists on Apple Music here in the US so it never goes away over here.

It is a fantastic song IMO
