Awards Season 22/23

She is amazing. She came to a Q&A for Women Talking and she was an excellent speaker.

The first act is by far the best part, but once Marc Maron comes in it just becomes this really cliched and soapy redemption story. Alison Janney's character in particular is just bizarrely written.

She's a fascinating mix of PSYCHO-BABBLE, LIVELOVELAUGH MUM and HOLLYWOOD BULLSHIT.

She’s doing and saying all the right things to get her award. She’s definitely the one with the ‘story’ right now.

It's going to be interesting. Basset has swept all the precursors so she should be a lock, but I wonder if the same Academy that was too snobby to nominate J.Lo for Hustlers might balk at giving an Oscar for a Marvel performance.

It’s a toughie. I agree that Oscars can be more conservative than the other awards, but maybe Angela will win given the snub for a couple of other key black actors.

This shouldn’t be how awards are given out of course but we all know better

Was Basset genuinely Oscar-worthy in Black Panther? (Genuine question - I missed it. I think she was robbed 30 years ago.)

The Academy wasn’t afraid to snub Chadwick Boseman or Glenn Close in recent years when it was their turn to win for reasons other than performance.

No she was not awards worthy at all in Black Panther. No one was. It’s very clearly a make-up nomination from 1993.

I think a situation where people think that Bassett has it in the bag and they vote for their favorite could happen. Similar to what presumably happened with Close and Boseman.

Basset is still an absolute queen and icon and I wouldn’t be mad for winning in an iconic role. But I want Curtis to win it more.

Good for her! Hope that salves the wound of being robbed of an Oscar nomination by that VILLAINOUS WHORE Andrea Reisborough!

(I honestly really like The Devil’s Whore. I thought she was great it in, and I’ve watched it plenty of times on All4. I wish everyone would pick on the Marlyn Monroe actress instead.)

Anyone had any luck tracking down some of the lesser-known nominees this year? There's usually a screener thread on Reddit, but apparently they've clamped down this year.

Particularly looking for the International and Documentary feature nominees that aren't already streaming.

Close is coming to cinemas soon. EO is playing at cinemas now. The Quiet Girl is on BFI Player (a friend of mine has an account).

Documentary Feature was easy as A House Made of Splinters and Navalny are on BBC iPlayer. Fire of Love on Disney+, All That Breathes is on Sky/NowTV. All The Beauty and the Bloodshed is in cinemas at the moment.

The shorts were quite difficult but we did track them down eventually. Some were on YouTube using a VPN set to the USA.

Tell It Like A Woman being the bloody Diane Warren song nomination is very annoying. I don’t even think this film exists.

Unfortunately Close and EO are unlikely to get much distribution in Leeds.

Watched a Quiet Girl last night - lovely! And with a Eurovision connection too! (Carrie Crowley hosted the show in 1997)

Close is or will be very soon on Mubi or at least I'm constantly bombarded with adverts about it on social media.

More of an award adjacent but the annual Vanity Fair Hollywood issue is out

I guess they really liked All Quiet on the Western Front.

It seems that Austin Butler is a lock for actor because if even here with all the awards for Banshees, Colin still couldn’t win.

This is so cringe
