Eastenders 2023 (1 Viewer)

What are we thinking about ROXY? I read something with my fellow Rita saying that the door is now open for a return.
I've heard a rumour that Rita Simons is joining the cast of Emmerdale.

She's been saying that since she was axed originally, I don't think it's credible :D I think getting rid of them was a massive mistake, but I really don't see how they could come back - we saw them both dead at the bottom of the pool!

She's been saying that because she played it as Roxy just holding her breath, that's what the character was doing despite all the evidence seen on screen :eyes:

I think you could MAYBE get away with having her playing a new character who happens to look similar, with Amy seeing her and people thinking she's losing her mind when she talks about it etc, but Roxy herself? Dead dead dead.

I honestly believe she is coming back. It’s probably because I want to believe that, but I think her return had a universally positive reaction. SURELY ADDS FUEL TO THE FIRE?

Didn’t they do that in Neighbours with Kerry Bishop? :D

I suppose Kathy appeared in that Children in Need sketch before coming back properly, maybe that counts as a precedent :tongueout:

Yes it is absolutely DAFT but I think they always have a way to bring anyone back if they feel it will be beneficial for the show.

The characters are quite thick. Ravi having a very suspicious looking, intense conversation with Keanu in broad daylight after him being released on bail.

Also why does McKlunky’s have neon lighting indoors?

I do love drunk Kathy.

I also am fascinated how pro-Eastenders Moopy is. Compared to how everyone else prefers Coronation Street/Emmerdale.

I just grew up with it almost from the start. Corrie was previously my mum’s main choice but she even deflected to Eastenders over the last few years.

I used to watch Corrie as a child but completely gave up when it went to having too many episodes per week - wasn’t there even a point when there was an hour long episode at a weekend, or one day where there were two episodes with the ITV News sandwiched between? I was probably in my early 20s when they did that and that was when it screamed to be catering to retired people who just watch TV every night, and that was before streaming. Even now I’m older, Eastenders is far easier to catch up on when you miss a couple of episodes.

We were similar except with Brookside rather than Corrie, we always watched EE but it only became the main soap in our house after Brookside was cancelled.

My parents hated Eastenders and didn't watch any soaps. When I got my first TV, I wanted to know what all the fuss was about and was immediately hooked. I've dabbled with Corrie and have a very broad working knowledge of it. But even when I've dumped EE for a year at a time it's easy to jump back in. I guess I've grown up with the characters.

I used to watch them all but then when I got short on time it came down to EE only. I still read about the other shows but don't watch them

Surely it is just a matter WHEN rather than IF Ronnie and Roxy will return? I know it’s daft, but it’s a soap.

That would be a total jump-the-shark moment, at which point they may as well GIVE UP.

Hollyoaks and Neighbours could just about get away with that shit, but po-faced Eastenders who always laud themselves on "gritty realism"?

They barely got away with Kathy, and she at least had the benefit of her "death" plot being entirely offscreen.

UNLESS they do a Dallas and the last 5-6 years was ALL A DREAM.

Dirty Den!

I don’t think anything is really out of bounds in soap. Pat returning puffing on a Benson & Hedges with a hot pink blazer and her usual garish earrings on the stairs to Peggy was as ridiculous as it was a good watch.

There's always at least SOME sort of fig leaf of realism though, arguably Den Watts was very borderline (as we the viewers were led to strongly believe he was shot even if it wasn't seen) but still had enough wiggle room to carve out a return storyline. As poor a decision as it was, Ronnie and Roxy were both shown on screen to die and also had no outstanding storyline threads that could tie into a future return :( I think the lesson has been learned for big exits since then, at least - just look at Mick, they get to play with all the storylines a death gives them AND it was left vague enough that he could quite feasibly return down the line.

Actually DID Den get shot by the canal? I can't recall whether they made it so he was shot and survived, or just never shot at all...

Den’s death was specifically edited in a way to make it ambiguous, to the point the original series creators left the show over it. It just took so long for Leslie Grantham to return that it was just accepted in public consciousness by then that he had died in those scenes.

We literally saw Ronnie and Roxy die, we saw Ronnie in a coffin and we’ve seen their grave.

I can’t really recall 100 percent sure what happened with Dirty Den but I am pretty sure that Sharon ID’d the corpse after he died.

I do see your point though in that it would be a very difficult one to write but remembering it is a soap and basically anything goes, I wouldn’t say it is impossible.
