i.e. HBO/Max redoing all the Harry Potter books as a 'ten year' TV series, but keeping the look and production design the same (because of the theme parks :D)

I think we've discussed bits of this elsewhere, but it's probs worth its own thread with rumours and news building. Obvs I don't want it (TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS), but I'm finding the whole thing deeply fascinating.

The latest:

- Filming in Leavesden from Spring/Summer
- Succession's 'consulting producer' Francesca Gardiner is showrunner, with lead director Mark Mylod (who directed lots of Succession). JK Rowling is all across it too, in between being unhinged on twitter
- Casting rumours and unconfirmed leaks: Mark Rylance rumoured for Dumbledore; Paapa Essiedu for Snape (I think one main difference from the films will be that black people are allowed proper speaking roles in this :o); Roy Kent from Ted Lasso as Hagrid. I'm really intrigued to find who's out of options and whose love for money outruns their creative ambition / compassion for trans people to actually sign up for this one.

When the films only finished 15 years ago and are still so regularly watched it's surely the most unneeded, desperate cash grab that the peak TV era has seen so far. There's a world in which it's the biggest disaster ever, and another where it's a big hit, despite nobody wanting it right now. I'm not sure which one we're living in (probs the latter if they get it right, alas) but I'm EXCITED TO FIND OUT.

I really do not see the need and I agree it’s just a sad cash grab. The movies did a fantastic job bringing the books to life and I can’t imagine the TV series doing anything more for the story.

Most of all, anything that gives JK any more cash can fuck if.

Oh I assumed they were doing some sort of PREQUEL or spin-off not just re-hashing the existing story?

The tarot says UTTER DOGSHIT.

A black Snape?
I hope they cast a black actress as Hermione as well, I'm sure it'll go down well with Rowling's current fan base.

I don't think the movies aged well, I could never muster the energy to sit through most of them a second time. I only really like 3 and 7.1. The rest is just not that good.

Oh not Mark Rylance. Without any other knowledge, I'm going to presume he agrees with everything old big dick Rowling says and cancel him immediately.

I think this is pretty much guaranteed to be a big hit. The only way I can see it not doing well is if parents can't be tempted to add HBO to Disney, Prime, Netflix, YouTube and whatever other streaming services they leave their darling little ones in front of.

It's a very big IP and I suspect the audience they need (children, people with children) aren't particularly interested in holding JK Rowling to account for being a RELENTLESS HATEMONGER.

Oooooooh. Until 2025. HBO UK rumoured to launch in 2026. Wonder if this will be the carrot dangled?

I'm not sure where he stands on trans rights, but interviews with him reveal that he's crackers when it comes to medicine at least.

He's spoken about being anti the covid vaccine (just take garlic!) and having doubts about chemotherapy (try a gong bath instead!)

Doesn’t HBO have an exclusive deal with Sky anyway?

And Sky are furious at the fact they're about to be dumped:

Love how bitchy the WBD spokesperson's comment is there :disco:

Does this mean NOW TV will lose all its HBO shows? Which is basically the only reason to subscribe.

Yep. Bye NOW and hello MAX (for 1-2 months each year before cancelling)

It's just been Succession and White Lotus for me over the last few years (plus Industry, but that's BBC in the UK). The Gilded Age and Barry are also 'on my list'

The Penguin was great, annoyingly there’s always at least one HBO show on Now that stops me cancelling my membership. And when I do actually do it I just end up being offered 3 months for £2.99.

Also the casting for this is a nonsense, it's pointless, and even then I wouldn't watch it anyway because J*anne has shat all over my childhood and I'm bitter about that.

Oh BUGGER at Now TV being about to lose HBO stuff. I suppose I'll just switch to HBO UK the second it debuts, but that's a pain.

I don't really understand the Now and HBO deal for example Oz a HBO show isn't on Now but is on Paramount+?

After spending 20 years going on about insisting on all British talent for the films? Sad!

They must be struggling if they’re casting a 79 year old in a key role for what they’re hoping to be a flagship tv show.

I saw him in a play last year where he played Roald Dahl, a hugely successful children's author turned deranged bigot :side-eye:
