Old TOTP (BBC4) (2 Viewers)

That the Slade comeback lasted from these episodes to the 1984 ones is utterly shocking to me.

I can entirely understand why Joe Dolce got to #1. Watching these episodes has been like a heterosexual man watching a drab Eurovision and then getting to the one about pirates.

Hush! Next you'll be saying 'Vienna' was a PO-FACED PRETENTIOUS load of old GUFF and I've found that is OFFICIALLY NOT A VALID OPINION

Slade were ace. The comeback era is slight by comparison but they were fun. Blokey fun but fun none the less.

Jeez, "Police Officer"

FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD - "Relax! Don't Do It"!

BBC - OMG, this revolting song is clearly about THE SEX. Disgusting! BANNED!!

SMILIE CULTURE - "Don't you just hate it when the rozzers annoy you for having a few kilos of weed in your car?"

BBC - Yeah, that seems fine.

Sal Solo. Thank fuck he was a one hit wonder.

Sorry, is that a "spoiler"?

I'm currently watching The Story Of 1985 now. After going back and listening to a couple of 1981s, it does seem like a huge sonic move forwards.

Although perhaps I should say 'move away' rather than 'move forwards'.

I had 5 of this top 10...

Ray Parker Jr (12" glow-in-the-dark pic disc)
Toy Dolls (7")
Tears For Fears (7")
Frankie Goes to Hollywood (12")
Band Aid (12")

and I had the number 11 (Nik Kershaw, 7" pic disc).

Oh, my first Madonna record was "Live To Tell", if yr wondering...

Poor Andrew Ridgely - demoted from pretending to play the guitar to pretending to play the bass. :(

Band Aid's death list is just George Michael and Rick Parfitt, innit?

This episode is pretty poor, but after that first 1981 episode, it's a WELCOME RELIEF.

We're now actually entering the era where I may have owned the odd song. As such

3: The Frog Song

My parents had Band Aid. Also I picked up Last Christmas/ ESW in a charity shop as a teenager.

My take away from the 1981 show has definitely been Kelly Marie's Hot Love. It's very insistent.

The first TOTP edition of 1985 wasn't that good. And the second episode from 1985 isn't that great either but it does feature the magnificent 'Since Yesterday' by Strawberry Switchblade. As it's co-hosted by Mike Smith it won't be shown on BBC4 but, as in the past, the owner of the Popscene website has uploaded a video of the episode...

Grab it quick as the video will only be available to download for 7 days.

It's a massive downer that Strawberry Switchblade won't be repeated. Such a brilliant pop record.

Sarah Greene is such a CUNT to deny BBC4 viewers Strawberry Switchblade.

Ironic to see Mike Reid wearing a commie t-shirt. Fucking cunt.

I wish I could "like" these sentences separately.

I have never seen the Babs and Eil performance before. It's all kinds of enjoyable on many levels. Did they hate one another? I get the feeling they may have done.

They showed an admittedly brief clip of Mike Smith on one of the Christmas shows. I was hoping there had been something of a thaw.

It's hard to believe that SARAH GREENE holds this kind of power.

I like that Bronski Beat song. Christmas novelty shit took so long to leave the charts didn't they? I mean there's actual Xmas songs in the charts in mid January. They had tinsel up last week!

You know what it was like in the old days. Wagon Wheels were THIS big, school holidays lasted forever, and Christmas lasted until mid February.

I do seem to recall Xmas started later and ended later.

That's definitely true. This business of Xmas kicking in around late September/early October wasn't around when I was a nipper. You didn't even see advent calendars in the shops until mid-November.

You know they referred to 'the snow' in this episode? I proper remember it - it must have been the first major snowfall of my conscious life. I had a cute as fuck duffle coat. Anyway...

The absence of a new episode I resorted to Marc 1981. Bucks Fizz, Sharon Redd and Duran Duran are highlights. That Visage follow up was really rubbish. Otherwise it's a case of sifting through Phil Collins and The Who.

Did M-Beat sample that Police Officer song on Incredible?

Sal Solo... what the fuck was that?

This is soon approaching my birth! Waiting for Elaine and Babs to get it on.

I was so sure, she never charted again, so this been such a joyous surprise.
I'd never heard this but my mum had some ropey compilation album in the 80s which included her song Loving Just For Fun so I knew she'd had 2 hits. As its now officially 3 hitsa greatest hits must surely be ESSENTIAL now.
