Old TOTP (BBC4)

Africa Voodoo Master not at all racist then.

I was thinking WHAT THE BUGGERY BOLLOCKS is ROSE LAURENS doing on TOTP but then I remembered they are still doing that silly INTERNATIONAL thing

I'm on the CATCH UP

Not David Grant again. He was in LINX and they weren't MUCH GOOD, then he had a solo career that wasn't MUCH GOOD and then he invented JAKI GRAHAM who, let's face it, WASN'T MUCH GOOD EITHER

What a career

I quite like the STYLE COUNCIL purely because they PISSED SO MANY PEOPLE OFF. I also don't mind TOMMY VANCE for similar reasons

I neither LOVE nor LOATHE most of Madness.

I'm not surprised people were taking the PISS out of Gary Numan by this point. What a DIRGE

I hated Madness, on account of my brother liking them largely. Now I dislike them on account of thinking Suggs is a wanker.

I think it was around this stage (or possibly when he descended even deeper into darkest wankerdom) that I saw Gary Numan live. I didn't want to, but my cousin Jayne was dumped by her boyfriend and so took me instead.

He was on the broadcast I saw. It's worth recording the version broadcast after midnight rather than the one on earlier, which usually is edited.
This is the one I record on Sky, I don't know why they just can't schedule it at the normal time and push everything else back ten minutes though.

I've never been able to take Gary Numan seriously ever since when back in the early 80s he crash landed while piloting a plane over India and was arrested for both smuggling and being a spy! Quite what he was supposed to be smuggling and spying on I've yet to find out...

Oh, and a check reveals he also crashed an plane near Southampton while attempting to fly over the Channel. At least Bruce Dickinson can manage to successfully fly a plane.

Can you imagine the horror when you board a flight and over the tannoy comes the voice "This is your Captain speaking, I'm Pilot Gary Numan". It must have been the equivalent of being sent to Sun Hill for a career in the police force...

I love that Lotus Eaters record and the singer is cute.

Were Depeche Mode always referred to as Depech-ay Mode back then?

I think it's technically the correct pronunciation insofar as that's how you would say the name of the magazine they took their name from.

The magazine Dépêche Mode would have an accent over the final e if that was the case, wouldn't it? I assumed it was just English speaking DJs not having a clue.

Incorrect or not, it's how I used to pronounce it, because I thought it was more exotic.

Fuck knows, I read it somewhere at the time...which was about 32 years ago.

Watching TOTP from last night, for reasons unknown the performance by Annabel Lamb of 'Riders On The Storm' was cut from both the 7.30pm and late showing (which has just finished) of Top Of The Pops. Even the person who does the BBC4 twitter feed doesn't know why. It surely can't be down to copyright reasons and the video doesn't feature any naughtiness.

Yesterday it was TOTP from 08/09/83. The episode from 15/09/83 can't be shown due to a certain relentless charity fundrasier co-presenting with Janice Long. But that doesn't stop it from being uploaded!

Karma fucking Chameleon indeed - I can't believe I bought the single. It sounds rubbish these days!

How did Ali Campbell get away with the fake Jamaican vocals for so long and so successfully?

I used to love 'Red Red Wine' back in the day but now can't stand it!

In other news I see Steps are at number 1 on the midweeks Albums chart today with Clean Bandit at the top of the Singles chart. I wonder if both will be at the top when the first official midweeks chart is published on Monday? I do hope so...

Ooh TONIGHT I CELEBRATE MY MUFF

I haven't heard this in an age. Also whoever said that JOBOXERS are SHIT is ON THE MONEY

I must also address that Heaven 17 song. What a load of old shit. It backs up my previous theory that they only had one good song.

I've never even been completely convinced of THAT

Neither Heaven 17 nor the reconstituted Human League topped the first 2 pre-split Human League albums. But "Dare!" came closest.

I still enjoy the Penthouse And Pavement album. But they are very definitely a band that benefits from being heard and not seen.

Catching up on the last few episodes. That JoBoxers song is SHIT. No wonder it put an end to them.

Shamefully, I don't mind that Status Quo record but, in my defense, this is entirely circumstantial. My brother owned it on a blue vinyl 7" and we shared a brief moment of music geekery. It didn't last but hey, good times.

That Howard Jones song could be half decent if he dropped the ooh ooh ooh bits.

Catching up now. Toyah really outstayed her welcome, didn't she?

I have got lost in an old TOTP k-hole today #unemployment

It's actually ASTONISHING. Part of the show's appeal for me is that everything is just a little bit SHIT. Even the biggest stars on here look positively amateur.

AND MIKE READ IN SHORT SHORTS

I'm right in my TOTP era now - I remember virtually every record and even some of the performances. I had, however, forgotten how awkwardly stitched together Depeche Mode looked around that time. Once they got all leathery and metalbashy, they shed that skin reasonably well tho'.
