Old TOTP (BBC4)

I recall Tommy Vance playing the wrong side of "Kiss" by Age Of Chance when it was just outside the top 40. This is credited by some for its failure to break through the following week.

Catching up cos I don't start work til 12. I had this Spandau Ballet record. Not because I liked it that much but because it was on a silver vinyl that was more like a mirror than a coloured vinyl, if that makes sense. It sounds shit now.

Hell mend me but this Ultravox tune sounds pretty decent.

Depeche Mode's music feels quite dated in 1984, when you compare it to the Hi-NRG stuff that was around.

Jeez, I've just realised this was prompted by "Blasphemous Rumours". Which sounds fucking amazing.

Plus, how hot was Alan Wilder exactly?

God that was MUCH WORSE than I remember

And I don't remember it being anything less than DREADFUL

How does SIMES know that 'I Want To Know What Love Is' is a FUTURE NUMBER ONE?

FIX! BAN THE BATES FROM APPEARING ON OUR SCREENS EVER AGAIN

ps. I want to hear ANOTHER ROCK AND ROLL CHRISTMAS and I don't even CARE how many KIDS were NONCED UP during its recording, SO SUE ME

OH GOD THEY WERE SO FUCKING DULL AND ALL THEIR SONGS SEEM TO GO ON FOR WEEKS

Pretty sure that Band Aid video has been edited since. I certainly don't recall Boy George drinking straight from a liquor bottle before.

WTF was that insane Paul Weller fronted version of the Wham Rap all about?!

That show was so weird. Frog Chorus, Bronski Beat using a bossanova backing track from a child's keyboard, Ghostbusters playing during a Christmas show, Weller having a schizophrenic episode.

I didn't recognise most of the Band Aid video from the Boy George drinking shot onwards, I think they must've re-edited it for sure.

"The Wild Boys" is an absolute banger and a hearty "bollocks" to anyone who disagrees.

I have absolutely no recollection of that Nick Heyward record. Like, none at all.

I was amazed that his solo career went on as long as it did. I remembered it very much as blink and you'd miss it.

Yeah...he's had about 5 different songs on the 83/84 repeats this year - surely that's his last?..

"I know you don't care what I think but I thought I'd tell you anyway". Ahh, bless you John Peel.

Looking ahead to 1985 I see the BREAKERS section is born. This is really getting to my era.

I'd forgotten that FGTH's "The Power Of Love" had debuted at 3.

I do, however, remember going to the HMV in Union Street with my mum to buy it. 12". White gatefold sleeve. Came with portraits of the band.

Still a brilliant, brilliant record.

Does that not coincide with the show being cut to a regular 30 minutes?

My sister had a picture disc of The Frog Chorus. In fairness, she was 7. And it was a shaped picture disc too.

Going from two sassy club hits to something like The Power of Love was such a brilliant move and really completed the 1-2-3 of classic singles with elegance and style. Giving it a full on Xmas Story make over for the video was a brave and genius move, seeing as two before they were making music and videos about ejaculation.

I remember buying it for my sister, because I knew I couldn't get away with owning it.

...and of course, it means the record has become a Xmas perennial without actually having anything to do with Xmas.

And just over a decade later the Spice Girls repeated the feat.

Obviously Jive Bunny's Let's Party sets the standard for elegant ways to complete a debut trio of #1s.

BOO. It would have been preferable if they had just gone with one episode some weeks rather than doubling up.

Just watching a bit of the Xmas special. Howard Jones' choice of outfit is really something.

Kala would hate this episode = no women so far. Apart the debatable thing at the back of the Thompson Twins.

Fuck, I thought we'd seen the last of caterwauling human gargoyle Jim Diamond.
