Old TOTP (BBC4)

The tedious covers were so depressing. This one in particular is horrible. I Got You Babe isn't even a very good song.

Well, indeed. It were shite to start with.

There were too many songs between 1984 and 1985 called The Power of Love. Huey Lewis's was by far the worst.

Hmm...my memory of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam was unduly pleasant. Ah well, at least I'm no longer living under that minor delusion.

I dunno, Jennifer Rush wasn't much better, even if she at least had a touch of drama about her. FrankieGTH's is still an outright classic.

Amazed Gary Davies hasn't been nicked for noncing.

And I hated that Cars record.

I call BULLSHIT on Steve Wright's claim that Maria Vidal is performing any more live than she does when she's asleep. Still I am rather partial to Body Rock.

The Marillion singer could have been almost fit with a better haircut.

This will ALWAYS remind me of Jill Tyrell (the TV character not the lying Moopy poster).

Credit to them for flaunting the miming so brazenly.

I think the excuse was that Fish had a bad throat but he'd have been miming anyway so not quite sure what was happening there. Marillion were genuinely huge at this point which historians will likely find bizarre.

OH GOD RED BOX WERE FUCKING SHITE MUSIC FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T EVEN LIKE MUSIC

See also IT FUCKING BITES and GO FUCKING WEST

What the FUCK is Red Box Lean On Me? What a hateful video.

I actually loved this at the time. I think it was the synchronised drummers. Sorry. It sounds well shit now.

Yeah that was explained. I was about to be Twitter agog that I bet his fans were pissed that he could do TOTP but not his gigs.

Belive it or not I've always been OPINIONATED

Mind you at the time I thought MADONNA was OLD PAP

'Body And Soul' isn't quite as good as 'History' but WHAT IS? Also you have to love someone called JETTY WHEELS

Can't believe him from Baltimora is a gay.

I assume we've missed a sensational Bonnie live perf.

"Yesterday's Men" is a lovely song...should really have got its due when they reformed but they eschewed it in favour of the "nutty" hits. Ah well.

This Jagger and Bowie video has earned it's so bad it's good status. Especially knowing they've fucked each other, which I have no idea if that was common knowledge in 1985.

That Thompson Twins record is a donkey. They were obviously spent.

Even seen this?

It's such a shame neither is hot

It was probably really dry hate sex. I bet Jagger's todger was like an old Pepperami afterwards

It's my favourite Madness song by FAR. That may be because it's the only one that's TOTALLY MISERABLE

It must get better in the long run
Has to get better in the long run
Will it get better in the long run?
Will we be here in the long run?

My GOD the Thompson Twins are a barrel of cat shit.

Absolutely fucking dreadful with nothing to be said for them apart from THIS which was released to great acclaim on promo under the Feedback Max moniker :disco:

Unfortunately everyone went off it as soon as it was revealed that THEY were behind it

Didn't the Thompson Twins sell out originally to find fame? I seem to recall reading they were quite an art house outfit, but purposely forced themselves into the mainstream after commercial failure.

Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that per se - I guess it just leaves anyone doing it in a vulnerable position when trying to maintain it, or not.

Sort of. The 7-piece art-house version had a US club hit with In The Name Of Love but this was largely made by Tom Bailey on his own and not everyone in the band was enamoured with the direction. I *think* Tom Bailey effectively bought most of the members out of the band and took over making the music himself with the other two being more involved in the staging and visuals than they were in the records, Bailey figuring they would still have to *look* like a band.

Actually, I've just read the Wikipedia - looks as if it was actually a bit more cloak-and-dagger than that and Bailey told the others the group was splitting up...and them immediately reformed it, taking full control in the doing so.

I figure it's not so different to what Phil Oakey did with The Human League. But to much lesser effect.
