Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

I do not remember that Paul Hardcastle/Bob Hoskins thingy AT ALL.

Obviously I know Love Can't Turn Around, but NO-ONE told me it came with SUCH a sensational performance.

Madness looking rather awkwardly stitched together here. Clearly needing a rest. Good song tho'.

WFT is going on w/ Doug E Fresh? Why is he having to mime some bits but not others?

Singer Roland Gift said that Elvis had come to him in a dream and told him he would record the greatest version of Suspicious Minds ever.

I think I'd prefer almost ANY other version of SUSPICIOUS MINDS over the FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS'

CASE IN POINT

I can't quite decide if Jennifer Rush's Ring Of Ice is quite good or quite shit.

I do think with different production is could be quite the BANGER, though.

The production was quite bad and I didn't pursue it any further.

I rather like Ring of Ice, though I agree it had the potential to be more rousing if produced differently.

I thought Morten's lesbainese hairdo last week was quite unfortunate. He was definitely one whose looks improved with age.

Enjoyed hearing Bronski Beat again and Sophia George. Always nice to have a John and Janice episode too.

I LOVE SOPHIA GEORGE

A big fat one who a go go dancer
A little slim one who's a radio announcer

Time has inevitably not been kind.

This FYC cover of Elvis is horrible.

For some reason his reminds me of Todd Carty.

I hadn't noticed that before, now all I see is TUCKER JENKINS.

I agree their version isn't up to much. I didn't realise before that Jimmy Somerville did backing vocals on it, but it really is quite obvious - he was like a moth to the flame for a cover. I'll take the Candi take posted by Shirl, or the excellent version by Dee Dee Warwick of the recently reduced reputation.

POSTCARDS ONLY, none of those old fashioned envelopes.

Pleasingly, Morten looks much better this week.

Are we going to get a Nana Mouskouri performance? I do hope so.
We certainly will, though not on BBC4 as she appeared on a Mike Smith edition.

From Thursday 23 January 1986, the full edition...

Two days after this edition was broadcast my sister got married! I still remember it (the marriage) like it was yesterday. It was absolutely freezing on that sunny Saturday morning, 25 January 1986, the start of a whole month of almost sub zero temperatures throughout the whole of the UK. Not many people seem to remember the bitterly cold February that followed from the following week, even though it was the second coldest February of the 20th century.

On the KIM and MIDGE show tonight HAZELL DEAN as she is TODAY and performing THEY SAY IT'S GONNA RAIN on CHEGGERS PLAYS POP :D

In the words of Hazell A LOVELY LITTLE PROGRAMME.

Kim has been quite charming, even if the programme is nothing very new. Jazzie B must be quite bored of doing these BBC4 documentaries.

Well behind, time for a catch-up.

"Mated"? What a weird name for a song, makes them sound like caged pandas...

That Sun CIty record has one weird line-up - Joey Ramone popping up at random was fun.

Whitney would never have been allowed to wear all those bangles while laying down a vocal. All that rattling would be totally picked up, engineer's nightmare.

Anyone else remember when the Pet Shop Boys were believed to be a prank based on Neil Tennant having been a writer for Smash Hits? so many music journos were failed musicians that one of them becoming successful was too much for a handful to bear.

Anyway, West End Girls is still the absolute tits. A shame Mike Smith robbed us of their TOTP debut but hey....

Shaky. Poor soul. He must be well sweaty in that Xmas dad jumper.

Just skipping through the Xmas thingy for sightings of Peel. Worth it.

RE: a-ha

I had a SLEEVELESS WHITE TOP when I was 15. Thankfully I think no PICTORIAL EVIDENCE EXISTS

I'm AGHAST that ALL THREE of the PSB's appearances doing WEST END GIRLS have been MIKE SMITHED

Nippy followed by Su was literally the chart of dreams.

HOW IS FUCKING SHAKEY STILL AROUND?
