Tennis 2025

Hold on, is the general tennis feeling "SAVE US PLEASE" for someone who just came back from a drug ban? :D

YOU LOT ARE WEIRD

It's not that I'm particularly ENAMOURED at the thought of a Sinner win after the drugs ban, more that I'm going to root for anyone against Zverev after reading the horrific tales of domestic violence from his former girlfriend.

Oh, I don't follow tennis enough to know that. FAIR ENOUGH.

But STILL...!

wow Maddy devoured that first set. really strong. no panic about being broken back. Aryna looks so nervous.

Hopefully she keeps it up & doesn't have a US Open style choke. Expect Sabs to swing freely if Mads is close to the finishing line.

a few more wild hits and errors creeping in to disrupt Keys now. I think she will tire and the second set will likely go to Sabalenka in which case GAME ON.

I feel quite emotional :D

What a performance after her hideous collapse against Sloane in her other slam final. And an incredible run as well, beating 3 slam champions in Sabs, Iga & Rybakina plus 2 tough opponents in Collins & Svitolina.

I'd never expect consistency from Mads but she's so obviously top 5 in form like this.

Sabs gave a great account of herself, she'll be back. She might not be my favourite but she's a heck of a player.

Madison Keys performed incredibly. Lights out in first set and just about enough in the 3rd. I started the matching kinda hoping for a Sabalenka win to do the hat-trick, but as the match went on found myself wanting it for Keys more and more. And she totally deserved it.

The final 3 of the men, once Djokovic went out, were ALL awful and I wish none of them could win it but Sinner is the lesser of the evils for sure.

I'm supporting Sinner solely because I'm team ANYONE BUT ZVEREV

Really pleased for Maddy, although I prefer the slams to be selfishly shared amongst a few she definitely has the past resume to deserve one ahead of others who have one and I think she could have had Wimbledon last year before getting injured v Paolini. She definitely did it the hard way and it was brave of her to change her racket and stringing settings at 29 to try something new.

she's in the form of her life and apart from the new racket etc it shows what can happen when you shake off the mental shackles a bit. SO happy for her. a first slam at 29 is such an achievement and I don't think it'll be her last.

most impressive thing is Sabalenka was also great - Maddy just had the edge. :disco:

15 years since a female slam winner beat the #1 and the #2 to take the title :o

Thrilled for Madison, really doing it the hard way, absolutely brutal run to get you first slam. Collins, Rybakina, Svits, Swiatek, Sabalenka.

I still worked in tennis in 2017 and she was just an absolute picture of misery that day, on court, afterwards. It was tough to see her implode and just not show up.

I think now she’ll have a decent seeding again she has a good shot at some other big titles this year. She also moves so much better than she used to - that was what really stood out to me today.

Zverev stopped at the last once again :disco:

Hopefully he retires as the most accomplished player never to win a slam, & it eats away at him forever :disco::disco::disco:

Zverev being heckled by someone in the crowd before his runner-up speech. Couldn't make out what was being said though.

Thank you Jannik 🙏

May he slamless and the woman saying it louder for the back of the room - I salute you!

Her legacy is that she went away for two years after a drug ban and barely won a match without the drugs… it’s quite a horrible end to her career.

I really liked Simona. It was saddening & disappointing how it all turned out. The attempted post-ban comeback was even more ill advised than Sharapova's though.

Sexy Casper Ruud has found some hard court form in Dallas, playing a resurgent Denis Shapovalov in a final hopefully featuring XXX SHIRTLESS & UPSHORT SHOTS (I'd have preferred sexy Tommy Paul to have beaten Denis but eh well)

Alcaraz vs DeMinaur in Rotterdam. Noted the apparent slow decline of Medvedev & Tits who both lost to qualifier Mattia Bellucci.

Belinda Bencic revs up her return from maternity leave winning Abu Dhabi. Beating Veronika Kudermetova 6-0 6-0 earlier on this week a particular highlight.

Rooting for Lucia Bronzetti to win the Cluj final against Anastasia Potapova, a player I really cannot warm to at all.

Bless you, Sardonicus, for keeping this thread alive during the tour grind and not just the Slams! Perhaps this'll save me from having to get all my goss from lurking on r/tennis!

I do not understand the fuss about Tommy Paul's looks. And isn't he a MAGAtard? Blech. Same with Potapova (though I get why people think she's stunning). My only mental note of her is 'Putinista', but it's a distant one and I can't be arsed to search for receipts rn as I'm not inclined to pay that much attention to fourth-tier WTA players. Hard pass on both anyway.

Onto the good stuff. Chapeau, Shapo for a superb return to form! I've been waiting for him to come good ever since THAT win over Nadal way back when. His head and injuries always seemed to get in the way, so it's great to see him finally deliver on (a little of) his potential. Hope he manages to stay injury-free and find some consistency for the remainder of the season. With Tsitsipas's evident decline and Dimitrov's ongoing physical issues, I'm now banking on him to save the OHBH this year. :disco:

I do like Casper a lot and feel bad for his loss, but Denis needed this more imo. Ruud has to go all-in on one of the clay Masters come spring. For a 3x Slam finalist who was perilously close to number one, his title resumé is somewhat lacklustre... to put it mildly. If Rublev managed to get over the hump, I'm sure he'll manage it at some point in his career. Hopefully v soon!

Alcaraz adding an indoor title to his books was not in my 2025 tea leaves. Conditions seemed slower than they should, but that's a heck of an achievement - an ATG career already, and kid's only 21, wow. I need to see how the Sincaraz rivalry plays out this year. Guessing they won't be at the same tourney again until Indian Wells? In the meantime, Alcaraz-Hurkacz is a matchup that I'm enjoying very much. I'd like poor Hubie to get another big win somewhere down the line. Bagelling Maestro at his last Wimby should turn me against the fellow, but he seems like such a nice chap and that press conference where no one turned up has placed him firmly within my sympathies.

Lovely to have Mama Bencic back on tour and winning titles. Inshallah she can translate this to better Slam success later in the year.

I've no idea if Paul is MAGA or not, I don't think he's ever commented on politics. You might be thinking of John Isner who has been quite vocal in his support IIRC.

Oddly after this discussion came up I saw this post on Reddit of Tommy attending the BLM protests a few years ago, which might be more indicative of his political positions than vague "vibes"

This US open mixed doubles thing is completely ridiculous. Terrible lack of respect to the doubles players to be honest.

It wouldn't even be difficult to market the doubles better if they want to increase the audience for it. It's a lot of fun to watch. Neither the ATP or WTA ever do a good enough job at marketing the sport properly.
