The Marvels

I feel sorry for Brie, she's generally nice and unproblematic, I wish this had happened to somebody CUNTIER and EVIL.

I'm honestly leaning towards the idea of the MCU taking a break for five or so years, then coming back with their X-Men movies (which can have the odd cameo from the current characters to catch us up on what they've been up to). It's going to be diminishing returns if it carries on like this, maybe audiences need an opportunity to miss it for a while?

What's next in their schedules at this point? Are there any big Marvel movies coming out soon after this one? I know Deadpool got to complete two months of filming right before the strike began and apparently it's STILL scheduled for May 2024.
As for TV shows I think Echo is the only one confirmed for January; We have Agatha for late 24, Daredevil has been pushed back until 2025 :o and Iron Heart is stuck in post-production hell :(

270 million!!!
WHO would authorise a dollar over 100 million for a superhero movie whose biggest lead name is Brie Larson and which clearly doesn't have widespread appeal outside of the hardcore Marvel stans. this will probably do worse than the Eternals.

There must be some creative accounting going on. I saw the trailer the other day and the visuals looked like shit!

It is a sequel to a film which made £1.1 billion worldwide. It doesn’t look like it’s going to work out for them, but that budget isn’t clearly deranged given that until recently Marvel was in the habit of having its sequels be more successful than the first film.

The thing is Captain Marvel was pre-Covid and still within “The Infinity Saga” in the lead-up to Endgame. This new “phase” is very different. If it’s not Spider-man everything is a risk now with their budgets.

Absolutely and I'd be very surprised if we don't see a lot more 100-150 million budget MCU films over the next few years. I'm sure The Marvels budget, if accurate, was greenlit back in 2019 when they thought that superhero movies would just keep making more money forever. They've turned out not to be right, but I can still see where they were coming from.

I'm willing to go and see this but NO ONE WANTS TO GO. Only 30% filled for the premiere event too.

Final trailer - the obvious desperation of it all :( the first 30 seconds are completely unrelated to the movie and having to shoehorn Iron Man and Captain for clout.

also, it's the first one that seems very Carol-heavy, not a lot of Monica and Kamala is seen. If Nick Fury is in this, does it mean I have to watch that borefest Invasion show then?

The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has revealed she is a big fan of Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children and even used it as inspiration for the film.

The latest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero franchise is set for release later this week, with DaCosta admitting to IGN the Square Enix film was used as a reference for "a couple of scenes".

"It's just an amazing, amazing movie, and has really great fight scenes and has a really great ending sequence with the main character being thrown into the sky by all the other characters," she said of Advent Children.
Not sure this is something I'd admit, personally :tongueout:

I think this might be the first Marvel film I don't bother with at the cinema since pre-the first Avengers (i.e. the point I realised they were good fun and worth bothering with) (Until recent times)

I mean, is there not even a FIT MAN in it??

I think he’s referring to the old Popjustice theory that Louis Walsh only ever kept Bellefire on the books as a vehicle for money laundering and tax write-offs. :basil:
Several people got a new car paid for out of project Bellefire

You mean this didn’t convince anybody?

It's really shaping up to be a complete bomb, I feel bad for the cast and crew but I'm so curious what lessons Marvel/Disney take from this going forward.

I think it'll affect things outside of Marvel as well. One of the issues seems to have been the fact audiences were expected to have seen three separate streaming shows if they want to be up to speed with this movie. One of the main Star Wars projects in development is a theatrical film that serves as a sequel/conclusion to the various Jon Favreau/Dave Filoni D+ shows (Mandalorian, Boba Fett, Ahsoka etc). There's no way they won't rethink THAT in the wake of this surely, it would be making the same mistake again on an even bigger scale

I wouldn’t worry too much about Star Wars movies announced to be in development. They will get cancelled.

I assume the D+ stuff will end up with a streaming series.

It might show some of these studios to stop getting so far ahead of themselves. Do they really need to green light about 10 films and shows at once before testing the waters?

It feels like it'll take these studios years to unpick the knots streaming has tied them up in, if they ever do!

I think Disney+ is in the worst position in terms of future. There’s barely any marvel or Star Wars coming next year and the price keeps rising. I personally like the FX stuff but that’s not going to sustain them.
