Well this looks like it might be quite fun :disco:

Demi Moore playing an aging Hollywood star who has been relegated to doing aerobics videos and who has turn to a mysterious process called “The Substance” to cling on to her job.

Premiered at Cannes and has been described as “magnificently tasteless” with rave reviews for Ms Moore.

I’m definitely watching that :disco: Just to stare at her cheekbones for 2 hours

this is a really big moment for her, I can't imagine Demi ever thought she'd be in a critically acclaimed film again. her performance along with the film itself is getting raves. GOOD FOR HER!

I saw it at Vue tonight! I think they had scattered preview screenings and like jiva said it was on Odeon earlier in the week.

Strange really because it really doesn’t feel like a multiplex film but I’m all for as many people seeing this as possible!

The trailer has piqued my interest, so I'll be watching this tonight.

I do want to see this, but my tolerance for body horror isn’t great and I’ve heard a lot of people saying it’s the most disgusting thing they’ve ever seen, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to bear it :D

Oh
Is this what body horror means?
I'm not going to watch this after all :D

I'm a little apprehensive about seeing this. I enjoy horror, but this looks a bit much.

(I smell a Demi Moore appreciation thread)

Whilst it does hit every possible body horror trope going, the most disgusting thing in it is Dennis Quaid eating shrimp.

This was nuts. Went to a mid-afternoon screening at Cineworld today and it was packed.

Loved every second even if it did feel a tad overlong.

It's not perfect but I'm giving it a 10 anyway

For me the most horrifying scene was

the teeth falling out. NIGHTMARE

Well this was quite the ride :D

In the end, the gore was so ridiculously OTT that I wasn't too bothered by it, a few wince inducing scenes notwithstanding.

I'm not sure I'd call it an all-timer of a performance by Demi, and if Toni Collette couldn't get nominated for Hereditary then there is no way in HELL this is getting into the Oscar race, but fair play to her for submitting herself to all of... that.

Absolute high camp and I agree a strong recommend for a cinema viewing before social media ruins all the most gag-worthy moments.

I think my favourite part was about 2/3 in when:

Demi just fully becomes the wicked witch from Snow White :D

This was revolting. Absolute trash. I started to feel ill, had to take my hoodie off as was sweating and wondered if going outside would calm me down. I give it a 10 for sheer commitment. What I assumed to be a nod to Leigh Bowery's audience enema spray being followed by the Cassandra O'Brien.Δ17 Hollywood crawl of fame alone will surely secure its cult status. I just don't get what Madame Sparkle was getting from it since her better self was not something she was experiencing herself - it was quite pointless, and why would neither of them try to leave a note or Moore's character retaliate by doing what was done to her (it wasn't quite clear that the binge eating was done to knowingly have chicken legs pop out her glues, etc (the frame checking was amusing). And as freaked out as she was, surely she would have seeked out that crazy man again. Anyway, it was certainly bold and I kept scoffing when reminding myself I had hoped this would be Moore's Oscar moment. I hope Glen Close high fives Demi next time they're out and about.

A little update about me thinking I was having some sort of feverish fit because of how repulsed I was. I'm on antibiotics and it turns out I just have had a bug for 3 weeks. Still, it was traumatic and quite a substantial experience.

I watched it again tonight because I really wanted to subject my friend to it. Having a Friday night audience as opposed to a late-night Tuesday screening definitely added to it. The SCREAMS of horror in that last third. :D

Yes, she was great. Really strikingly beautiful too, though with Andie McDowell’s genes that’s not a surprise.

They play mother and daughter in Maid and are both fantastic. I hadn't seen her in anything before then but she became an instant favourite.

I first notably saw her in Fosse/Verdon as Ann Reinking. She was fabulous in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Seberg, and a great starring role in My Salinger Year (released here as My New York Year).

I saw it again last night as well and also had a much bigger audience than the first time. There was a gang of “lads” sat in front of us, chatting away and passing around a bottle of WHISKEY and I thought they were going to be trouble, but they were silenced by Margaret Qualley’s body and then by everything else afterwards :D One of them even walked out in the last act.

I really hope it becomes a proper word of mouth hit.

Also, word of warning for anybody who (like me) uses the RunPee app for longer films like this. One of their recommendations is to go during Demi's makeup scene about halfway through which is insane because it's the best scene in the film!

I had no idea this app existed until just now. Thanks!
