The UK: The Keir Starmer years (1 Viewer)

Such WICKEDNESS.

I enjoy the detail that Big Ange and Red Green Ed are the most popular with the public... can they do a little coup?

I’ve been listening to the Audiobook of this on @Penelope 's recommendation. It's very good, if frustrating, and quite even-handed on the Corbyn vs Starmer schism I feel. As I have long suspected, it pretty much confirms that it's all the aides and SPADS who treat politics as though they're intriguing at the French court who come off as primarily responsible for the awful atmosphere in the Labour party, moreso than the majority of the MPs themselves. (I haven't gotten to Wes taking a prominent role yet though so TBC on that)

Well, most popular with the Labour membership :basil:

Angela is quite popular with the public, albeit incredibly divisive. There's a lot of really deep-rooted classism against her.

A working class ginge will never be allowed to lead the country if the papers have anything to do with it and because New Blue Labour (i.e. most of them) are obsessed with the papers, they have plenty to do with it.

On the current leadership rules (which the unions have a veto over changing), I honestly wouldn't rule out that Angela might end up being the only candidate on the ballot - she could sweep the entire union nomination stage...

I have no doubt Wes will turn into even more of a backbiting sabotaging monster within the government if he fails to make it onto the ballot in a leadership election.

Oh, Wes would LOVE briefing against Rayner. Lickspittle, backstabbing, misogynist, transphobic, lying, slimy prick that he is.

Can you leave the trees and the cruising ground please. They look pretty from this side of the river. Do what you like with the people.

I always assumed North East Somerset to be rather POSH but Google Images of Keynsham put paid to that notion. Let's carve it out and push it into the sea.

There are a lot of beautiful (and wealthy) villages in the Chew Valley. But Keynsham is just an utterly faceless commuter town between Bristol and Bath resentful of all those villages and the bigger cities.

At least when I was a kid it had a lovely Cadbury's factory you could visit. Now it has nothing going for it.

I just remembered Dan Norris is the West Of England mayor (no real idea - we abolished the role for the city but still have him for the region) as well. But he wasn't standing for that again at the election next month anyway. We've got Arron Banks standing for Reform, though :)

Genuine shocker. Also quite grotesque if the allegations are true - he used to be an NSPCC protection officer and he's been in politics in the area for years (has been the mayor since 2021 and was an MP and minister under Blair).

Also that is going to be an arse of a by-election if he's convicted/resigns. Could genuinely be a four-way marginal - I wouldn't be surprised if the Lib Dems or Reform won.

He had the seat before Rees-Mogg, didn't he? Or at least one of the many boundary changes.

The seat now really is quite ungainly and difficult to call, as it's a real hodgepodge of areas.
