The War in Ukraine

I have a feeling NATO will talk Poland out of triggering Article 5. I don't think there is any appetite to get involved in a full blown war with Russia.

There will be the usual proclamations of 'this is not acceptable' from various European leaders and they'll all continue as normal.

I almost want Nato to enter the war and end it quickly (considering how weak Russia has been), but that would of course be a totally different kind of war so I guess not.

I feel the same way but you have to wonder if Putin would see that as weakness…

Poland has said it is considering invoking Article 4, consulting with NATO and increasing military preparedness.

Article 4 being presenting concern to their NATO allies, rather than a military response.

I think they’d only think about invoking Article 5 if it transpired that it was a deliberate attack, but EVEN THEN.

I wouldn’t remotely put it past Putin saying "make it look like an accident".

Obviously, it would be hard to prove either way.

Would they necessarily say that they were invoking Article 5, even if that were what’s happening? Presumably, in those circumstances, the plan would be to pop a half dozen missiles through Putin’s bedroom window thirty seconds after we fax him the declaration of war.

Dunno, no one has lived through it before.

Even IF it was a stray UKRAINIAN missile, it is still entirely down to Putin. Ukraine wouldn't have any need to fire missiles if Putin hadn't marched in.

Sounds like they're going with invoking Article 4, to be discussed by NATO members tomorrow.

Not that it means much in the grand scheme of things, but the BBC have had three military experts on looking at the pictures of the fragments and saying they look like the surface to air missiles of the type Ukraine have been using.

No nuclear war before Christmas please. Save that shit for January

I suppose there IS an argument to getting it/us over with, but I do so enjoy December

Polish government now stating they were Russian missiles.

Just to add that the Polish government are terrible cunts.

Bloody typical, finally flying to meet my BF on Friday and we'll probably all be nuked to oblivion by then

Seriously though I was thinking a while ago that eventually Putin would let some missiles hit Poland "by accident" to see how far the NATO boundaries can be pushed. Feels like a massive game of chicken - he knows NATO doesn't want to fight because of the near inevitable risk of it escalating to the end of human civilisation and might keep pushing and pushing, holding the world hostage and going "well what are you gonna do, end the world?", one country at a time
