How much do people think Gladiators has legs? I'm not convinced it will hold up for that long.

I think it could probably run for 3 - 4 series'. There are classic events (some mentioned in the episode thread) that haven't appeared yet, and it seems are unlikely to unless they're saving them for the later rounds. I imagine its appeal won't be all that different from Nina Warrior UK.

There are tweaks that could be made. The Wall, for example, now seems much easier, and I just wonder whether it's because indoor climbing is a more common recreational activity now than it was in the '90s (has any contestant failed to make it up so far?). I also suspect the popularity of this series will attract a wider range of applicants to the next one; with a few exceptions, most contestants this year so far seem to have been reasonably local to Sheffield.

It really does need tweaking, but it's an easy watch and the gladiator types are arguably an aspirational aesthetic for many people these days, so it would be a misshap if the BBC failed to develop it more for the next series.

It got 4.5 million in the overnights last night and would assume it will pick up another million or so on other platforms which is still a very respectable figure for any tv show in 2024. I think the second weeks consolidated figures will be in the chart @lolly posts this week?

Yeah I'm not saying it's not doing great NOW... I'm wondering how long it will last. I just can't imagine people wanting to tune into it week in, week out - I feel like the novelty will wear off quite quickly.

Wikipedia says 7.01 million for episode 2 which is great (but down 1.35m from episode 1, as you'd expect to be fair). But it feels like it's nostalgia only - maybe I'm wrong!

That was 8.026m for the final of The Traitors. And the last episode of Uncloaked got 3.967m immediately after.

Dancing On Ice (3.330m) and Ant and Dec's Limitless Win (3.289m) both out of the top 20.

That's got to be the closest I've noticed the three soaps ever being.

I know it spent most of its years on BBC2, but it's crazy to think that 21 series in, Dragons' Den is pretty much as popular as it ever was. According to Wikipedia, its highest ever audience was for the opening episode of series 9 in 2011 with 4.39m - when it was the #2 show of the week on BBC2.

Is Uncloaked not classed as a programme in its own right? Why does it not appear in the chart?

Surely it will return as more than a 'visualised podcast' next year. I can imagine it getting something more similar to You're Fired for The Apprentice.

Oh is this why it doesn't count?

Because I use the average for shows with multiple episodes. And neither of the other episodes of Uncloaked appeared in the Top 50 shows of the week, so I don't know the figures.

The #50 show (ITV Evening News on Monday) had 2.822m.

Ah I see. I didn't realise you were compiling the chart yourself - thought it was an official chart. I thought BARB et al usually took the top episode of the week rather than average episode, if there were multiple episodes of a show.,

Why bother though? It's relatively cheap and cheerful, and this way it tops the charts for both iPlayer and (presumably) BBC Sounds. I could see You're Fired adapting to become more like Uncloaked than the other way round tbh.

I think Uncloaked works pretty well as a tv show too*. It's interesting enough to look at for the traitor reveals to the losing contestants alone, imo.

I'm really enjoying Gladiators for the nostalgia, they all seem rather nice (to the contestants) compared to the originals.

BARB lists all episodes. I decided to only include one (or else sometimes the top 20 would have around 10 shows in it and be quite dull), and thought the average was better than the top show only. Although for the soaps, there's not much variation as you can probably imagine, unless an episode has been put on at a different time which always catches people out, despite iPlayer and ITVX. It happened this week when an episode of Coronation Street was on at 9pm and consequently ITV lost over half a million viewers for it.

I just think it could be better. And you could have a podcast AND a better TV show.

Agreed about You're Fired though, particularly if The Apprentice continues to track down.

If I included the highest rated show of the week rather than the average, Coronation Street would be one place higher, with no change for Emmerdale or EastEnders.

I'm pretty sure they used to release a chart in which they didn't include repeats - it always ended up in the newspapers etc on a weekly basis. But it may have been the newspaper journalists choosing to take the top show for the week rather than BARB themselves.

I find the secrecy about viewing figures really weird to be honest and appreciate everything you do to publicise what you can! :)

I don't think there's much secrecy, to be honest - at least for the 7 day figures, which are in the public domain. It irritates me that BARB don't give the 28 day catch up figures any more, which they used to until about 2 years ago. Now you'll only hear about them if the BBC or ITV decide to tweet about an individual show or issue a press release.

There's also more transparency for commercial TV than the BBC. On Thinkbox you can filter for the top 50 of all commercial channels - right down to tiny audiences of less than 10k for some shows. And get interesting ( :david: ) demographic info.

It's annoying that you can't see viewing figures for BBC shows that don't make the top 50 - I was wondering about Survivor figures after it dropped out of the top 50 and was never able to find them.

Just looking at Wikipedia to see if anyone has posted them, but for some weeks it just states < a figure - so I assume that's someone looking at the #50 of the week.

You could try a request under the Freedom of Information Act :D

Could we average the shitty FA Cup matches to find out the remaining programmes that would have made the top 20 without them? Annoys me seeing 3 places taken up by football :D

Well that would be Dancing On Ice and Ant and Dec's Limitless Win, and I quite liked excluding them!

YAY at Gladiators
Yes, it's up a little on the previous week - so appears to have levelled out after two weeks of falling. And I think the BBC would have been very happy had it opened with 6.5m in the first place.

As expected, The Apprentice does very well on catch up - adding over 2.6m from the overnights. It's still down over 800k on the opening week last year, but I don't think it will be going anywhere for a few years yet, unless it collapses over the run of the series, which it doesn't usually do.

Wow didn't expect it to end up top 5 - that's actually fine!

Those drops for the ITV shows so much worse! :o

I didn't realise that the next series of Saturday Night Takeaway was going to be the last. That's a bigger success for ITV than Limitless Win - it got between 5.0m and 5.5m for the run last year, although was at 6.5m - 7m the year before. It's still going to leave a hole in the schedules next year for ITV though.

The main question for ITV surely has to be when are they going to put Dancing On Ice out of its misery?
