I do feel like if this wasn’t the UK and the singer wasn’t male then the general consensus would be a lot fairer on here…

It’s easily one of the strongest songs of the year, completely different to a lot of the uptempos and, and there’s the small matter of it being Olly Fucking Alexander who we KNOW can put on a show. It definitely has a place and I can see how and where the points will come from.

I still think it if this was coming from another country I would still be concerned about it getting lost amongst the more eccentric high energy entries of the year.

But having said that I imagine the staging will be fantastic and I highly suspect they will elevate/revamp things for Malmo(í refuse tk believe they're not holding SOMETHING back) so I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that this will tank.

Plently of entries that have been met with more muted reactions than this one and gone on to do well so I will remain hopeful FOR NOW

The reactions online have been fantastic from what I’ve seen, though? I absolutely think if this was from another country and by a woman we wouldn’t have the usual tedious round of assuming it’s coming last.

Although I admit it’s such a CHAOTIC YEAR, with no clear front-runner that it’s incredibly difficult to predict how the leaderboard will shape up, especially with very little jury bait as well.
Between Finland/Netherlands/Estonia/Croatia/Switzerland see at least 1 or 2 of them crashing and burning terribly

I must say, for all the talk of Melfest entries being generic and unsafe, this is probably one of the safest Eurovision entries this year when you look at what else has been chosen….

NEVER CHANGE BUTTERTART

NEVER CHANGE

I'll say this. For all the talk of 'Oh, Olly's nabbed a Dua Lipa reject' when the producer was revealed, I REALLY can't imagine Dua ever recording a song like this. It feels totally tailored to Olly.

My first thoughts on the opening bars of this were "It's A Sin" - theres nothing Dua Lipa about it at all :D

I’m with OUR TART on this. I’m really not sure what it is people want.
I was predicting top ten for Sam when Moopy said there was no way he was escaping the bottom five, I was saying Mae was shit when everyone else said she was good, so you’ve made a wise choice siding with me :disco:

IF (and I don’t necessarily think this is the most likely outcome) this completely tanks and RIM TIM TAGI wins then yeah, I’d say we’ll pretty much be back to square one in terms of public opinion.
Thankfully, I actually think the public opinion on Eurovision seems to have turned a corner, at least in terms of really enjoying it for the music in a way that we haven't seen before and a whole new generation really engaging with it.

In terms of getting artists with any kind of profile or clout to do it... well I feel there will be a lot of them watching Olly's result closely this year.

I do feel we need these safer middling entires. There’s barely any so far that will garner a lot of points from jury and televote. Many countries are trying to be eccentric or quirky and EDM songs (e.g. Austria) hardly ever do well with juries either. This song has good names attached which should help a little.

Mae didn’t finish last so there is hope for Olly.

500 sales.

I don't think the song is the issue here - it sounds like something that Olly Alexander would potentially release as a solo artist and would at least garner some airplay. It's also by default better than most things the UK have sent in the past 25 years or so because... well, UK.

However, it's like UK have learnt half the lesson with Sam Ryder - that you not only need something that sounds like a hit, but also a track that can be performed live. We saw with Mae last year that they pretty much refused to do the sensible thing and have backing singers to cover up her... vocal faults. A lot will basically depend on Olly's ability to pull this off live - or if they'll at least be smart enough to hide vocal flaws with amping up the backing singers imho. I could see this getting a cute finish, but I could also see it bomb depending on that.

Apparently there was a piece on this on BBC breakfast just now where it was opined that we never do well because everyone hates us, and Sam Ryder only did so well because the contest was hosted in Liverpool. :manson:

Where to begin…
